Definidos los aspirantes obligatorios y eliminatorias WBC: combates ya conocidos y otros no se realizarán

El momento más interesante en el calendario WBC es en el que se define oficialmente de una tacada quiénes serán los aspirantes obligatorios de los campeones mundiales y quiénes disputarán eliminatorias. En el marco de la convención anual de dicho organismo, se llegó ayer a la sesión de aspirantes mandatorios, si bien en esta temporada la mayor parte de los enfrentamientos de relieve que se esbozaron ya se conocían o estaban ya pactados, y algunos otros posiblemente ni siquiera se lleguen a producir.
Este es el resumen de lo que dio de sí la sesión de aspirantes obligatorios.
Peso pesado: Como ya se sabía, puesto que PBC ideó ese plan meses atrás, Deontay Wilder se enfrentará en una eliminatoria final a Andy Ruiz, de modo que el Consejo simplemente reiteró su visto bueno.
Peso puente: La aplazada pelea entre el “campeón” Óscar Rivas y Lukasz Rozanski se mantiene como la defensa oficial, si bien no se disputará en Colombia (los organizadores del duelo tienen una disputa con su colaborador colombiano) sino en Polonia. También se sabía que el siguiente retador sería Alen Babić, aunque para certificar su posición éste afrontará un combate eliminatorio ante Ryad Merhy que en principio Matchroom Boxing ya tenía pactado.
Peso crucero: En esta división hubo ciertas noticias, puesto que se confirmó que, tras una defensa voluntaria ante un rival por confirmar, Ilunga Makabu se tendrá que medir a Noel Gevor Mikaelyan. Por otro lado, Thabiso Mchunu y Badou Jack se enfrentarán en una eliminatoria.
Peso semipesado: Como informamos ayer, Callum Smith accederá al mundial ante Beterbiev después de Yarde y si no hay antes unificación con Bivol.
Peso supermedio: Nuevamente se confirmó algo que ya era de sobra conocido, o sea que David Benavídez y Caleb Plant se enfrentarán por el título interino a principios del próximo año.
Peso medio: Esta era una de las divisiones que necesitaba más arreglo. Sin embargo, se desaprovechó la ocasión para repararla y se dejará estancada. Simplemente se explicó que el campeón Jermall Charlo está lesionado, que Carlos Adames sigue como titular interino y que la situación se tratará más adelante.
En definitiva, si en lugar de Charlo el campeón fuese otro boxeador, habría sido desposeído, pero a éste se le quiso dar más margen. Charlo, que tiene problemas con la justicia que no encajan con las palabras buenistas del WBC, no expone su corona desde junio de 2021.
Peso superwélter: Sampson Lewkowicz, el promotor de Sebastián Fundora, pidió que su boxeador fuese el siguiente en retar al ganador del Charlo-Tszyu, o sea solicitó saltarse el esquema de rotación de defensas obligatorias de los campeones unificados. También señaló que Tony Harrison no parecía dispuesto a medirse a Fundora en una eliminatoria, si bien Alycia Baumgardner, que es entrenada por el primero, dijo que Harrison sí quiere realizar esa pelea. Aunque está por ver si las palabras de Baumgardner sólo fueron una defensa de cara a la galería o simplemente expusieron un hecho, el WBC ordenó la eliminatoria Fundora-Harrison.
Peso wélter: Se rumoreaba desde la ruptura de las negociaciones entre Spence y Crawford que el primero iba a pugnar a continuación con Keith Thurman. Así que el WBC se limitó a ratificar a Thurman como aspirante obligatorio…
Peso superligero: Después del enfrentamiento entre Regis Prograis y José Zepeda por el cinto mundial vacante, José Carlos Ramírez se enfrentará al ganador. Se ordenó una eliminatoria Teófimo López vs. Sandor Martín que probablemente nunca se dispute, puesto que Top Rank planea que López pelee por el mundial WBO vacante una vez que Josh Taylor gane la revancha ante Catterall y ascienda al peso wélter.
Peso ligero: Devin Haney y Vasiliy Lomachenko están en negociaciones para un duelo. Se ordenó una eliminatoria WBC del peso ligero entre Shakur Stevenson e Isaac Cruz que muchos dudan que se llegue a realizar, puesto que requeriría que PBC dejase participar a Cruz en una velada de Top Rank…
Peso superpluma, pluma y supergallo: La situación de estas tres divisiones se entrelaza de manera confusa, puesto que el campeón mundial pluma Rey Vargas combatirá por el título vacante del peso superpluma ante O’Shaquie Foster. Mientras se espera al resultado de ese combate, el campeón mundial supergallo Stephen Fulton disputará una pelea por el título interino del peso pluma ante Brandon Figueroa. Además de esto, Eduardo “Rocky” Hernández fue nombrado aspirante obligatorio del peso superpluma, mientras que Luis Nery y Azat Hovhannisyan se enfrentarán en una eliminatoria del peso supergallo.
Peso gallo: Se repitió lo que se expuso ayer, es decir que si Naoya Inoue deja vacantes sus títulos de la división, por el cetro WBC combatirán Jason Moloney y Nonito Donaire.
Peso supermosca: El tercer choque entre “Chocolatito” y el “Gallo” tendrá el título mundial WBC en juego, y su retador obligatorio saldrá de una eliminatoria entre Pedro Guevara y Andrew Moloney.
Peso mosca: Julio César Martínez se subirá al ring en diciembre ante un oponente por confirmar, su retador obligatorio deja de ser McWilliams Arroyo (la pugna se ha aplazado seis veces por diferentes motivos) y pasa a ser Ángel Ayala.
Peso minimosca: El próximo retador obligatorio WBC del campeón unificado Teraji será el exmonarca Hekki Budler.
Peso mínimo: El monarca Panya Pradabsri se verá las caras con el ganador de una eliminatoria entre el mexicano Luis Castillo y el sudafricano Ayanda Ndulani.
WBC mandatory challengers and final eliminators: bouts already known and others will not take place

The most interesting moment in the WBC calendar is when it is officially defined in one fell swoop who will be the mandatory challengers for the world champions and who will fight in final eliminators. In the context of the annual convention of said organization, the session of mandatory challengers took place yesterday. However, this time most of the outstanding bouts that were ordered were already in play or had already been agreed, and some others perhaps will not even happen.
This is the summary of the session of mandatory challengers.
Heavyweight: As was already known, since PBC devised that plan months ago, Deontay Wilder will face Andy Ruiz in a final eliminator, so the Council simply reiterated its approval of the fight.
Bridgerweight: The postponed bout between the «champion» Óscar Rivas and Lukasz Rozanski remains as the mandatory defense, although will not happen in Colombia (the organizers of the duel have problems with their Colombian associate) but in Poland. It was already known that the next challenger would be Alen Babić, although to strengthen his position he will face an eliminator match against Ryad Merhy for which, in principle, Matchroom Boxing had already an agreement in place.
Cruiserweight: In this division there was some news, since it was confirmed that, after a voluntary defense against an opponent to be confirmed, Ilunga Makabu will have to face Noel Gevor Mikaelyan. On the other hand, Thabiso Mchunu and Badou Jack will meet in an eliminator.
Light heavyweight: As we reported yesterday, Callum Smith will fight in the world championship against Beterbiev after Yarde, and only if there is no agreement for a unification with Bivol.
Super middleweight: Once again, something that was already well known was confirmed, that is, David Benavídez and Caleb Plant will face each other for the interim title early next year.
Middleweight: This was one of the divisions that needed the most fixing. However, the opportunity to repair it was wasted and it will remain stalled. It was simply explained that champion Jermall Charlo is injured, that Carlos Adames is the interim titlist and that the situation will be addressed in the future.
In short, if instead of Charlo, the champion was another boxer, he would have been stripped of the belt, but the organization wanted to give him more time. Charlo, who has problems with the law that do not fit well with the WBC’s goody-goody words, has not defended his crown since June 2021.
Super welterweight: Sampson Lewkowicz, Sebastián Fundora‘s promoter, petitioned that his boxer was the first to challenge the winner of the Charlo-Tszyu fight, that is, he requested to skip the rotation system of mandatory defenses for unified champions. He also pointed out that Tony Harrison did not seem willing to face Fundora in an eliminator, although Alycia Baumgardner, who is trained by the former, said that Harrison actually wants that fight. Although it remains to be seen if Baumgardner’s words were just for the sake of appearances or simply the truth, the WBC ordered the Fundora-Harrison eliminator.
Welterweight: It was rumored since the end in the negotiations between Spence and Crawford that the former was going to battle Keith Thurman next. So the WBC just ratified Thurman as a mandatory challenger…
Super lightweight: After the bout between Regis Prograis and José Zepeda for the vacant world belt, José Carlos Ramírez will face the winner. There was also ordered an eliminator between Teófimo López and Sandor Martín that will surely never happen, since Top Rank plans that López fights for the vacant WBO world belt once Josh Taylor wins the rematch against Catterall and moves up to welterweight.
Lightweight: Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko are in talks for a matchup. A final eliminator between Shakur Stevenson and Isaac Cruz was ordered, bout that many doubt will ever take place, since it would require that PBC would let Cruz participate in a Top Rank evening…
Super featherweight, Featherweight and Super bantamweight: The status of these three divisions is confusingly intertwined as world featherweight champion Rey Vargas will fight for the vacant super featherweight title against O’Shaquie Foster. While the WBC awaits the outcome of that clash, world super bantamweight champion Stephen Fulton will face a match for the interim featherweight title against Brandon Figueroa. In addition to this, Eduardo “Rocky” Hernandez was named mandatory challenger in the super featherweight division, while Luis Nery and Azat Hovhannisyan will square off in a super bantamweight eliminator.
Bantamweight: What was stated yesterday was repeated, that is, if Naoya Inoue vacates the belts of this weight class, Jason Moloney and Nonito Donaire will fight for the WBC title.
Super flyweight: The third clash between “Chocolatito” and “Gallo” will have the WBC world title at stake, and their mandatory challenger will be decided in an eliminator between Pedro Guevara and Andrew Moloney.
Flyweight: Julio César Martínez will step into the ring in December against an opponent to be confirmed, his mandatory challenger is no longer McWilliams Arroyo (the fight has been postponed six times for different reasons), but Ángel Ayala.
Light flyweight: The next WBC mandatory challenger for unified champion Teraji will be former world champion Hekki Budler.
Minimumweight: The titlist Panya Pradabsri will face the winner of an eliminator between the Mexican Luis Castillo and the South African Ayanda Ndulani.
