PBC gana subasta de mundial superligero entre el puertorriqueño Subriel Matías y el argentino Jeremías Ponce

El cinturón mundial IBF del peso superligero no ha sido puesto en juego desde febrero de 2022, cuando Josh Taylor y Jack Catterall se enfrentaron en Glasgow por el título indiscutido de la división que poseía el primero. Y es que, posteriormente, comenzaron los tiras y aflojas entre Taylor y Catterall sobre la posible revancha, las ordenes de defensa obligatoria de los organismos, las promesas del campeón de afrontar combates obligatorios que realmente no estaba dispuesto a disputar y la pérdida de sus títulos mundiales uno a uno exceptuando el WBO, organismo con el que Top Rank tiene una relación muy estrecha.
En términos prácticos, esto se ha traducido en que los ganadores de eliminatorias Subriel Matías, de Puerto Rico, y Jeremías Ponce, de Argentina, se han mantenido expectantes durante toda esta temporada. De hecho, Matías no pelea desde enero de 2022 y Ponce no combate desde un sencillo rodaje en abril.
En un principio, se suponía que Matías y Ponce iban a combatir por un título interino del peso superligero, pero cuando al fin el cinturón IBF de Taylor quedó vacante, ambos pasaron a ser nombrados coaspirantes al cetro mundial absoluto. Aunque se esperaban negociaciones no demasiado complicadas, el hecho es que las conversaciones han terminado llevando a ambos a una subasta, en la que ha habido una única puja: la de TGB Promotions, compañía que trabaja como satélite de Premier Boxing Champions.
La cantidad que presentó TGB fue de 510.000 dólares que, según las normas IBF, en este caso se repartirá al 50% entre los boxeadores, que en principio combatirán al fin durante los dos primeros meses del próximo año. Este se presenta como un combate interesante y potencialmente entretenido en el que el activo de manos “Jere” necesitará diseñar un esquema estratégico y táctico para superar el empuje frontal del contundente “Orgullo de Maternillo”.

The IBF world super lightweight belt has not been on the line since February 2022, when Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall met in Glasgow for the former’s undisputed title. Later, Taylor and Catterall began the discussions about the possible rematch, the organizations ordered mandatory defenses, the champion promised to face mandatory fights that he really was not willing to face and he lastly loss his world titles one by one except for the WBO, an organization with which Top Rank has a very close relationship.
In practical terms, this has meant that winners of eliminators Subriel Matías, from Puerto Rico, and Jeremías Ponce, from Argentina, have remained expectant throughout this season. In fact, Matías has not fought since January 2022 and Ponce has not fought since an easy tune-up in April.
Matías and Ponce were originally supposed to fight for an interim super lightweight title, but when Taylor’s IBF belt finally became vacant, they were both named challengers for the full world title. Although the negotiations were not expected to be difficult, the talks have ended up leading both to a purse bid, in which there has been a single bidder: TGB Promotions, one of Premier Boxing Champions’ satellite companies.
The amount offered by TGB was 510,000 dollars which, according to IBF rules, in this case will be split 50/50 among the boxers, who in principle will fight during the first two months of next year. This clash looks interesting and potentially entertaining, and in it a boxer with a good work rate as «Jere» will need to design a strategic and tactical plan to overcome the frontal charges of the powerful «Orgullo de Maternillo».
