¿Qué necesitan ver los líderes de DAZN para darse cuenta de que la promotora Golden Boy Promotions casi únicamente pacta combates a medida para sus estrellas y que la gran mayoría de sus veladas resultan completamente intrascendentes? Si no es que detrás de ello hay intereses más allá de lo deportivo o de lo económico que hacen razonable esta alianza, por ineptos que sean los dirigentes de la rama boxística de DAZN deberían darse cuenta de que cualquier inversión de dinero que se haga en esa compañía será un desperdicio y que ni siquiera la desesperación por incluir en su suscripción algo de pugilismo profesional no organizado por Matchroom justifica seguir vinculada a Golden Boy.
Por su parte, la promotora, después de haber inflado a Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez con peleas a medida ante Sullivan Barrera, Yunieski González y Dominic Boesel para posteriormente dejarle caer desde lo más alto del edificio boxístico hasta el asfalto ante Dmitriy Bivol, también debería llegar a un momento en el que se diese cuenta de lo que está haciendo con las carreras de sus boxeadores y se plantease si los aficionados se merecen que les traten con tanta falta de respeto.
Sin embargo, por ahora las cosas se mantendrán igual, y el sábado en el Arena Astros de Guadalajara, México, Jaime Munguía 40(32KO)-0 continuará con uno de los recorridos boxísticos más bocharnosos de un extitular mundial en activo de los últimos años. Y es que después de sus duros combates ante Liam Smith, Takeshi Inoue y Dennis Hogan (cuyas “extrañas” puntuaciones no reflejan lo sucedido en el ring), el equipo de Munguía ha recibido mericidísimas críticas por hacer que se enfrente a púgiles como Patrick Allotey, “Spike” O’Sullivan o D’Mitrius Ballard, además de a boxeadores con castigo acumulado (y que no iban a ser rivales para un boxeador joven, potente, fuerte y en plenitud) como Rosado, Szeremeta o Johnson.
Si el rendimiento en el peso medio de Munguía fuese en constante descenso, hasta cierto punto la situación sería comprensible, pero contrariamente, el mexicano ha evolucionado un tanto desde su versión tosca y heterodoxa del pasado, aunque no lo suficiente como para evitar que “Kilrain” Kelly le generarse complicaciones tácticas antes de terminar sucumbiendo por su desventaja en pegada y resistencia.
En cualquier caso, el hecho es que, después de todo lo señalado, Munguía no se enfrentará el sábado a un invicto, a un exretador mundial, a un exparticipante en eliminatoria o a otro púgil de características similares, sino que, tras rechazar enfrentarse por dos veces al ahora campeón mundial WBO del peso medio Janibek Alimkhanuly, se medirá al argentino Gonzalo Gastón “El Mago” Coria 21(8KO)-5(1). Se debe subrayar que los mayores logros de éste en los últimos dos años han sido un triunfo dividido (en el que sufrió un knockdown) ante Emiliano Pucheta, aguantar los diez rounds en una amplísima derrota por decisión ante el prospecto Fiodor Czerkaszyn y un knockout en dos asaltos sufrido ante el citado Alimkhanuly.
Dicho esto, ¿qué sentido puede tener que una supuesta estrella en auge como Munguía se enfrente a este tipo de adversario?, ¿cómo no se van a tomar los aficionados como una afrenta que Golden Boy y DAZN les ofrezcan esto? Los pocos que se decidan a justificar esta selección de oponente, quizás apunten a que el equipo de Munguía, que ahora dice que sí está dispuesto a enfrentarse a Alimkhanuly, únicamente desea dar más argumentos para demostrar que el kazajo no es tan temible como se dice batiendo a Coria con mayor facilidad.
Con todo, si lo que Munguía y su equipo quieren demostrar es que Alimkhanuly no es ningún boxeador al que se deba temer y que el mexicano sería capaz de derrotarle con solvencia, que se dejen de tonterías de una vez por todas y de ridículas comparaciones indirectas y den un paso adelante y reten al kazajo directamente para mostrar quién es mejor. Por otro lado, si Munguía no lograse lidiar con gran facilidad con Coria, esto sólo perjudicaría todavía más a su afectado prestigio y el intento de comparación favorable sólo daría más motivos para que se le criticase.
El evento encabezado por el Munguía-Coria, que contará en principio como semifondo con un choque en el que el pegador mexicano del peso pluma Rafael “El Divino” Espinoza 19(16KO)-0 se enfrentará al argentino Reuquén “Topo” Arce 15(7KO)-8(3)-2, que ha padecido tres derrotas en 2022 (dos de ellas por KOT), será emitido por DAZN desde la 1:00 de la madrugada en hora española, las 19:00 ET/16:00 PT.

What do the leaders of DAZN need to see to realize that Golden Boy Promotions almost exclusively organizes tailor-made fights for its stars and that the vast majority of its evenings are completely irrelevant? Unless behind it all there are interests beyond sports or money that make this alliance reasonable, even if the administrators of DAZN’s boxing branch are inept they should realize that any investment made in that company will be a waste and that the desperation to include in its subscription some professional pugilism not organized by Matchroom does not justify continuing to be linked to Golden Boy.
For their part, the directors of the promotional company, after having hyped Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramírez with easy fights against Sullivan Barrera, Yunieski González and Dominic Boesel to later drop him from the top of the boxing building to the asphalt against Dmitriy Bivol, should also reach a point in which to realize what they are doing to their fighters’ careers and ask themselves if the fans deserve to be treated with such disrespect.
However, for now things will remain the same, and on Saturday at the Arena Astros in Guadalajara, Mexico, Jaime Munguía 40(32KO)-0 will continue one of the most embarrassing boxing runs of a former world titleholder in recent years. After his tough fights against Liam Smith, Takeshi Inoue and Dennis Hogan (with «strange» scores that did not reflect what happened in the ring), Munguía’s team has received much deserved criticism for making him face fighters like Patrick Allotey, “Spike” O’Sullivan or D’Mitrius Ballard, as well as boxers with accumulated punishment (and who were not going to be a match for a young, powerful, strong boxer in his physical peak) like Rosado, Szeremeta or Johnson.
If Munguía’s middleweight performances were in constant decline, to some extent the situation would be understandable, but on the contrary, the Mexican has evolved somewhat from his crude and unorthodox version of the past, although not enough to prevent “Kilrain” Kelly to put him in tactical trouble before succumbing by his disadvantage in punch and resistance.
In any case, the fact is that, after all that has been said, Munguía will not face on Saturday an undefeated fighter, a former world title challenger, a former eliminator participant or another boxer with similar characteristics, but rather, after refusing to face twice the now WBO middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly, he will face the Argentinian Gonzalo Gastón “El Mago” Coria 21(8KO)-5(1). It should be noted that Coria’s greatest achievements in the last two years have been a split decision win (in which he suffered a knockdown) against Emiliano Pucheta, reaching the final bell in a lopsided unanimous decision loss against prospect Fiodor Czerkaszyn and a second round knockout suffered against the aforementioned Alimkhanuly.
That said, what is the point of a supposed rising star like Munguía facing this type of opponent? How can fans not take it as an insult that Golden Boy and DAZN offer them this? The few who decide to justify this choice of opponent, perhaps will point out that Munguía’s team (which now says that they are willing to face Alimkhanuly) only wants to show that the Kazakh is not as fearsome as they say by beating Coria more easily than him.
All in all, if what Munguía and his team want to prove is that Alimkhanuly is not a boxer to be feared and that the Mexican would be capable of defeating him handily, they should stop the nonsense once and for all, and the ridiculous indirect comparisons, step forward and challenge the Kazakh directly to show who’s better. On the other hand, if Munguia couldn’t defeat Coria quickly, this would only further damage his affected prestige and the attempted favorable comparison would only give more reasons to criticize him.
The event headlined by the Munguía-Coria fight, which in theory will have as a co-feature a clash in which the Mexican featherweight puncher Rafael «El Divino» Espinoza 19(16KO)-0 will face the Argentinian Reuquén «Topo» Arce 15(7KO)-8(3)-2, who has suffered three defeats in 2022 (two of them by TKO), will be broadcast on DAZN from 7:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT., 0:00 a.m. in the United Kingdom.
