A veces se dice que los boxeadores no necesitan una alianza fija, estable y duradera con un promotor para poder triunfar, afirmación que, pese a no ser falsa del todo, ni mucho menos es siempre válida, más bien al contrario. Es decir, aunque hay púgiles con un talento descomunal que han logrado forjar su camino por sí solos y trabajando únicamente con los promotores a través de breves contratos y acuerdos en igualdad de condiciones, por lo general quienes buscan esta salida terminan padeciendo muchas dificultades que frenan su progresión, y que no pocas veces les fuerzan a terminar firmando un acuerdo con una gran compañía.
Un ejemplo claro de que ser un agente libre tiene desventajas lo encontramos en el excampeón mundial estadounidense Regis “Rougarou” Prograis 27(23KO)-1. Y es que, se piense lo que se piense de él en cuanto a su actitud o vida personal, el púgil tiene enormes cualidades boxísticas, entre ellas una estupenda potencia, un excelente manejo de la distancia, un sensacional equilibrio y notable técnica, lo que le permite ofrecer un trabajo de presión con golpes de poder realmente amenazante pero a la vez que ejecuta buenas acciones defensivas.
Si hubiese contado con el apoyo constante de un único gran promotor durante toda su carrera, seguramente Prograis estaría ahora en el top 10 libra por libra, puesto que no le falta ni un ápice de talento. Con todo, a diferencia de muchos boxeadores por debajo de él en cuanto a virtudes pugilísticas, pero que tienen más fama y prestigio a ojos de los fans, a Prograis le costó 7 años llegar a su primer mundial (que no fueron más debido a que aceptó ser participante de las WBSS). Y tras su ajustadísima derrota ante Josh Taylor ha tenido que llamar a todo tipo de puertas buscando actividad, recibiendo sólo salteadas peleas de escaso valor antes de acabar firmando un acuerdo con Probellum.
Finalmente más de tres años después de su crucial derrota ante “The Tartan Tornado”, Prograis volverá a disputar un mundial este sábado en el Dignity Health Sports Park de Carson, Estados Unidos, donde se enfrentará al también estadounidense José “Chon” Zepeda 35(27KO)-2(1) por el vacante cetro WBC del peso superligero. O dicho de otro modo, Prograis peleará por intentar volver al lugar que él, y muchos analistas, creen que merece en el boxeo.
Por su parte, Zepeda tampoco ha tenido una trayectoria fácil en absoluto, siendo necesario recordar que se dislocó el hombro al comienzo de su primer mundial contra Terry Flanagan y que perdió con mucha controversia su segunda pelea titular ante José Carlos Ramírez.
No obstante, cuando firmó por Top Rank, Zepeda se pudo beneficiar de un gran matchmaking de esa compañía para lograr triunfos ante excampeones mundiales como José Pedraza e Ivan Baranchyk. Es justo decir que “Chon” ha sabido estar a la altura de lo que se pedía de él, por ejemplo batallando en un combate del año contra el bielorruso (en el que los púgiles sufrieron cuatro caídas cada uno) o aplastando al enrachado Josué Vargas. Pero sin el astuto manejo de la empresa de Bob Arum no entraría a este combate con un prestigio mucho mayor que Prograis ante el gran público, considerando incluso muchos que Zepeda podrá aplastar a este adversario con suma sencillez.
Contrariamente, quien debe ser visto como favorito es Prograis. En primer lugar tiene una gran superioridad en potencia y explosividad que podrían ser vitales en el que se prevé un choque intenso. Por otro lado, “Rougarou” no sólo sabe abrumar con presión, puesto que cuando despliega su boxeo técnico puede ser un púgil muy complicado también, algo especialmente relevante teniendo en cuenta que Zepeda padeció dificultades totalmente inesperadas ante un rival con un estilo táctico como la veterana y castigada piedra de toque “Hank” Lundy. Finalmente, en cuanto a comparaciones indirectas, Prograis tuvo ante la mejor versión de Taylor (que fue uno de los grandes boxeadores del año 2019) una actuación superior a la que tuvo Zepeda ante Ramírez, debiéndose recordar que Taylor a su vez derribó y venció a Ramírez.
El mayor defecto que tiene Prograis es que, consciente de sus habilidades, no pocas veces tiene un evidente exceso de confianza tanto al ataque como a la contra, algo que le lleva, entre otras cosas, a malgastar tiempo de round y de combate. De ese modo, y habiendo afirmado Prograis que piensa ofrecer un boxeo de corte defensivo, si da por sentado que está teniendo más éxito del que realmente está logrando y deja que un Zepeda insistente y con ventaja en alcance se apoye en su buena cadencia de golpes, el primero podría verse en una difícil posición en las tarjetas. Con todo, si Prograis no se entusiasma de más con su destreza, está atento para castigar al contragolpe y, sobre todo, en la segunda mitad o antes se vuelca al ataque para hostigar a su rival y situarlo en una pelea de desgaste, debería poder lograr la victoria.

Sometimes it is said that boxers do not need a stable and lasting alliance with a promoter to be able to succeed, opinion that, despite not being entirely false, is far from always valid, quite the contrary. In other words, although there are fighters with enormous talent who have managed to create paths on their own and working solely with promoters through short contracts and agreements on equal terms, generally those who seek this way of advancing in boxing suffer many difficulties that slow down their progression, and that not infrequently force them to end up signing an agreement with a big company.
A clear example of the disadvantages of being a free agent is found in the American former world champion Regis «Rougarou» Prograis 27(23KO)-1. Whatever is thought of him in terms of his attitude or personal life, the boxer has enormous boxing qualities, among them great power, excellent distance management, sensational balance and remarkable technique, which allows him to offer really threatening pressure work with power shots while performing good defensive actions.
If he had had the constant support of just one big promoter throughout his career, Prograis would surely be in the top 10 pound-for-pound now, since he is not lacking in talent. However, unlike many boxers below him in terms of boxing virtues, but who have more fame and prestige in the eyes of the fans, it took Prograis 7 years to reach his first world championship (which were not more because he accepted to be a participant in the WBSS). And after his very close loss to Josh Taylor he has had to knock on different doors looking for activity, receiving only a few fights of little value before ending up signing an agreement with Probellum.
Finally, more than three years after his decisive defeat against «The Tartan Tornado», Prograis will once again fight in a world title bout this Saturday at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, United States, where he will face American José «Chon» Zepeda 35(27KO)-2(1) for the vacant WBC super lightweight belt. Or, in other words, Prograis will fight to try to return to the place that he, and many analysts, believe he deserves in boxing.
For his part, Zepeda has not had an easy career at all either. It is necessary to remember that he dislocated his shoulder at the beginning of his first world championship fight against Terry Flanagan and that he lost his second title fight against José Carlos Ramirez with much controversy.
However, when he signed with Top Rank, Zepeda was able to benefit from a great matchmaking from that company to achieve victories against former world belt holders such as José Pedraza and Ivan Baranchyk. It is fair to say that «Chon» has lived up to the expectations, for example battling in a fight of the year against the Belarusian (in which the boxers suffered four knockdowns each) or crushing the motivated Josué Vargas. But without the shrewd management of Bob Arum’s company he would not have entered this fight with far greater prestige than Prograis in the general public. In fact, many consider that Zepeda will be able to crush his opponent with great ease.
On the contrary, who should be seen as a favorite is Prograis. First of all he has a great advantage in power and explosiveness that could be determinant in what is expected to be an intense clash. On the other hand, «Rougarou» not only knows how to overwhelm with pressure, since when he deploys his technical boxing he can also be a very intricate fighter, something especially relevant considering that Zepeda suffered totally unexpected difficulties against an opponent with a tactical style like the veteran and punished stepping stone “Hank” Lundy. Finally, in terms of indirect comparisons, Prograis had a better performance against the best version of Taylor (who was one of the boxers of the year 2019) than Zepeda had against Ramírez. It should be noted that Taylor for his part knocked down and beat Ramírez.
Prograis’ biggest flaw is that, aware of his abilities, he often is overconfident both attacking or moving, which leads him, among other things, to waste round time. In this way, and having affirmed Prograis that he intends to offer a defensive boxing, if he assumes that he is having more success than he is really having and lets an insistent Zepeda (with reach advantage) rely on his good punch rate, the former could end up in a difficult position on the scorecards. All in all, if Prograis is not mislead by his own skill, he is attentive to counterpunch and, above all, in the second half (or before) offers intense pressure to immerse his opponent in an attrition fight, he should be able to achieve victory.
