Como ya es casi una costumbre inmutable en el boxeo profesional actual, la velada en PPV del próximo sábado encabezada por el Fury-Chisora III tendrá en general un respaldo malo, aunque no tan nefasto como el del PPV Crawford-Avanesyan. En cualquier caso, el hecho es que hay un par de combates hasta cierto punto significativos de los que se puede hacer mención y que quizás entretengan algo a los asistentes al Tottenham Hotspur Stadium de Londres, Reino Unido.
Dynamite vs. The KO Kid
Después de afrontar pugnas ridículamente fáciles ante Bogdan Dinu y Joe Cusumano, duelos que duraron combinadamente menos de seis minutos, y de un choque ante Trevor Bryan que no fue mucho más difícil, el peso pesado británico Daniel “Dynamite” Dubois 18(17KO)-1(1) afrontará ante el sudafricano Kevin Lerena 28(14KO)-1 lo que muchos consideran un paso adelante respecto a sus anteriores retos. Con todo, ni mucho menos es un combate a la altura de lo que se esperaría de una supuesta gran estrella en construcción como Dubois.
Y es que aunque Lerena tiene el peligro de todo boxeador que ha dado positivo en control antidopaje (estudios demuestran que, aunque eviten nuevos positivos, el índice de reincidencia en dopados es altísimo), es un peso crucero de 1,85 m, que cuando estuvo ranqueado en la cima de las listas mundiales se las apañó para evitar afrontar una pelea ante un rival de élite y que ascendió al peso pesado formalmente en este mismo año.
Es cierto que en su etapa en el peso crucero logró varias victorias meritorias, que es zurdo y que maneja sus directos de izquierda con astucia a la contra. No obstante, ni por asomo es un peso pesado al nivel del top 15 y un pegador más grande, explosivo y en mejor estado de forma como Dubois debería poder vencerle contundentemente. En este sentido, hay que destacar que Lerena sólo tiene un 50% de triunfos antes del límite y que a menudo le gusta esperar bloqueando a que sus oponentes terminen sus series para replicarles.
De ese modo, si no es que Lerena se vuelve de la noche a la mañana mucho más activo de manos o ágil de lo habitual, un Dubois mucho más contundente no debería tener problemas para descargar sus potentes mazazos en uno-dos y gancho zurdo para poner a prueba el encaje del visitante y probablemente conducirlo a una derrota por detención.
Campeonato de Europa
El otro combate de la velada que no es un completo despropósito (de hecho, puede ser el duelo mejor emparejado del cartel) será un campeonato de Europa del peso ligero entre el titular francés Yvan Mendy 47(22KO)-5-1 y el retador ucraniano, plata olímpico, Denys Berinchyk 16(9KO)-0.
El veterano Mendy es un púgil sólido y competente, con largas rachas de triunfos, sin derrotas antes del límite y que desde 2011 sólo ha perdido como visitante. Además, ha logrado varias victorias mencionables, destacando entre ellas su triunfo contra pronóstico en Reino Unido ante el entonces invicto Luke Campbell y su victoria ante el también imbatido Francesco Patera. No obstante, por un motivo u otro, en sus 16 años de carrera nunca ha logrado una pelea en la élite mundial, habiendo mantenido un perfil bastante bajo desde su derrota en la revancha ante Campbell.
Por su parte, Berinchyk, conocido por sus llamativas entradas al ring, pese a pertenecer a la misma generación de púgiles ucranianos que Usyk y Lomachenko, no ha irrumpido a lo grande en el boxeo profesional, ni mucho menos. Siempre peleando en casa ante rivales de nivel medio o medio-alto e intercalando actuaciones brillantes con otras no tan convincentes, Berinchyk ha consumido siete años de carrera profesional sin llegar hasta un mundial, habiendo sido nombrado para participar en varias eliminatorias que nunca se han llegado a producir.
Así, este sábado un Mendy que podría despedirse de su sueño mundialista en caso de derrota y un Berinchyk que necesita a toda costa brillar bajo los grandes focos para demostrar su valía y alcanzar una pelea en la cumbre antes de que sea demasiado tarde, se enfrentarán en un choque en el que el ucraniano debe ser considerado favorito por su ventaja en amplitud de recursos, astucia, agilidad y técnica.
Estos enfrentamientos más el Fury-Chisora III serán televisados en España por Eurosport 2 el sábado desde las 22:00, mientras que en Reino Unido será ofrecido a través de un PPV (27 libras) de BT Sport que se iniciará a las 19:00. En Estados Unidos la emisión de la velada comenzará hacia las 14:00 ET/11:00 PT y será ofrecida por ESPN+.

As it is becoming usual in professional boxing in the recent years, Saturday’s PPV evening headlined by Fury-Chisora III will in general have a bad support, although not as awful as the one in the Crawford-Avanesyan PPV. In any case, the fact is that in the Fury-Chisora event there are a couple of somewhat significant fights that can be mentioned and that perhaps will entertain the attendees at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, United Kingdom.
Dynamite vs. The KO Kid
After facing ridiculously easy fights against Bogdan Dinu and Joe Cusumano, bouts that combined lasted less than six minutes, and a clash with Trevor Bryan that wasn’t much more difficult, British heavyweight Daniel “Dynamite” Dubois 18(17KO)-1(1) will face the South African Kevin Lerena 28(14KO)-1 in what many consider a step up from his previous fights. All in all, this matchup is far from what would be expected from a supposed great star in the making like Dubois.
Although Lerena has the danger of any boxer who has tested positive in anti-doping control (studies show that, even if they avoid new positives, the rate of recidivism in doping is very high), he is a 1.85 m (6’1”) cruiserweight who, when he was ranked at the top of the world rankings, managed to avoid facing a fight against an elite opponent and who formally moved up to heavyweight earlier this year.
It is true that during his cruiserweight run he achieved several meritorious victories, that he is southpaw and that he uses his counter left punches with cunning. However, he’s nowhere near a top-15 heavyweight, and a bigger, more explosive puncher like Dubois should be able to beat him soundly. In this sense, it should be noted that Lerena only has 50% stoppage wins and that he often likes to wait blocking for his opponents to finish their combinations to answer them.
That way, if Lerena doesn’t suddenly become much more active with his hands or agile than usual, a fighter much more fit and much more forceful as Dubois should have no problem unleashing his powerful one-twos and left hooks to test the visitor’s chin and likely achieve a stoppage victory.
European Championship
The other bout of the evening that is not a complete nonsense (in fact, it may be the best matchup on the card) will be a lightweight European championship between French titleholder Yvan Mendy 47(22KO)-5-1 and Ukrainian challenger, Olympic silver medalist, Denys Berinchyk 16(9KO)-0.
The veteran Mendy is a solid and competent boxer, with long winning streaks, no stoppage losses and who since 2011 has only lost as a visitor. In addition, he has obtained several noteworthy victories, standing out his upset win in the UK over the then undefeated Luke Campbell and his victory over the also unbeaten Francesco Patera. Yet, for one reason or another, in his 16-year career he has never fought against an elite opponent, having kept a fairly low profile since his rematch loss to Campbell.
For his part, Berinchyk (known for his striking ring walks), despite belonging to the same generation of Ukrainian fighters as Usyk and Lomachenko, for now has not achieved great success into professional boxing, far from it. Always fighting at home against mid-level or medium-high level fighters and offering brilliant performances followed by others not so convincing, Berinchyk has spent seven years of his professional career without reaching a world title bout, having been ordered to participate in several eliminator fights that have never taken place.
Thus, this Saturday Mendy, who could say goodbye to his world title dreams in case of defeat, and Berinchyk, who needs to shine at all costs to prove his worth and reach a fight at the top before it is too late, will face each other in a clash in which the Ukrainian must be considered favorite due to his advantage in tactical resources, astuteness, agility and technique.
These clashes plus the Fury-Chisora III fight will be televised in the United Kingdom through a BT Sport PPV (27 pounds) that will start at 7:00 p.m. In the United States, the evening’s broadcast will begin around 2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT and will be aired by ESPN+.
