Callum Smith combatirá en marzo, Leigh Wood en enero

En entrevistas separadas, el promotor Eddie Hearn ha esbozado sus planes para dos boxeadores destacados de su escuadra como el excampeón mundial Callum Smith y el enrachado peso pluma Leigh Wood, quienes ya tienen fechas tentativas para sus primeras peleas de 2023.
En el caso de Smith, que es aspirante obligatorio WBC del peso semipesado, éste regresará al ring el día 11 de marzo en su Liverpool natal ante un oponente por confirmar. De todos modos, en las declaraciones de Hearn a Jake Donovan, el promotor ha especificado que, aunque todavía hay que decidir quién será su oponente, éste será un boxeador clasificado en el top 15. De hecho, Hearn ha ido más allá y ha dejado caer que hay conversaciones para que éste sea el número 1 WBA semipesado Joshua Buatsi.
Dado que ambos son compañeros de escuadra y sólo necesitarían esperar antes de que les llegase a cada uno una pelea mundialista, muchos dudan que Matchroom Boxing vaya a hacer que se enfrenten entre sí. Con todo, si bien estas dudas son más que lógicas, es verdad que existen precedentes en los que promotores, dudando de las posibilidades de éxito de sus aspirantes ante grandes campeones, han optado por un enfrentamiento “eliminatorio” dentro de la escuadra para dirimir quién está listo realmente para un campeonato.
Por otro lado, Hearn, al que le gusta muchísimo hablar a los medios, mucho más que a cualquier otro promotor, también ofreció declaraciones para ID Boxing, en las que confirmó que el peso pluma Leigh Wood (titular regular WBA) regresará al cuadrilátero en enero y que Leo Santa Cruz, Mauricio Lara y Kiko Martínez son los principales nombres para medirse al británico.
Hay que recordar que Matchroom y PBC han recibido bastantes órdenes por parte de la WBA para que pacten un combate entre Santa Cruz y Wood para terminar el proceso de reducción de campeones en la división, pero que ambas compañías han hecho oídos sordos a dichas peticiones o han buscado excusas para eludirlas o aplazarlas. En este sentido, Hearn sólo explicó que están teniendo conversaciones con PBC, si bien insistió en que Wood peleará en enero, lo que, sumado a que tenga ya otros posibles rivales sobre la mesa, muestra que están dispuestos a renunciar a su cinto secundario WBA y renunciar a la pugna con Santa Cruz si hace falta.

In separate interviews, promoter Eddie Hearn has outlined his plans for two important fighters in his squad as former world champion Callum Smith and secondary featherweight titlist Leigh Wood, who already have tentative dates for their first 2023 fights.
In the case of Smith, who is a WBC light heavyweight mandatory challenger, he will return to the ring on March 11 in Liverpool against an opponent to be confirmed. However, in Hearn’s statements to Jake Donovan, the promoter has specified that while his opponent has yet to be decided, it will be a top 15 ranked boxer. In fact, Hearn has gone further and has affirmed that the number 1 WBA light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi is a possible opponent.
Given that they are both squadmates and they would only need to wait before reaching a title fight, many doubt Matchroom Boxing is going to pit them against each other. All in all, although these doubts are more than logical, it is true that there are precedents in which promoters, doubting the chances of success of their challengers against great champions, have opted for an «eliminator» bout within the squad to settle who is really ready for a championship.
On the other hand, Hearn, who likes to talk to the media a lot, much more than any other promoter, also offered an interview to ID Boxing, in which he confirmed that featherweight Leigh Wood (WBA regular titleholder) will return to the ring in January and that Leo Santa Cruz, Mauricio Lara and Kiko Martínez are the main candidates to face him.
It must be remembered that Matchroom and PBC have received quite a few orders from the WBA to make a fight between Santa Cruz and Wood to finish the process of reducing champions in the division, but that both companies have turned a deaf ear to said requests or have sought excuses to avoid or postpone the bout. In this sense, Hearn only explained that they are having talks with PBC, although he insisted that Wood will fight in January, which, added to the fact that he already has other possible opponents on the table, shows that they are willing to vacate their WBA secondary belt and renounce to the Santa Cruz fight if necessary.
