En febrero de 2019, combatiendo en el peso supergallo, el joven filipino John Virgel “Valiente” Vitor 20(13KO)-2(1) sufrió un KO en el sexto asalto en un campeonato de su país ante el veterano Mark Anthony Geraldo, derrota que le llevó a un cambio drástico en su carrera. Tras un breve paso por el peso pluma, Vitor ascendió al peso superpluma habiendo dado forma ya a una racha de siete triunfos (seis antes del límite), siendo la última de ellas la que logró en el segundo asalto ante el excampeón nacional surcoreano Dong Kwan Lee 16(7KO)-3(2)-1.
En el primer asalto Dong Kwan Lee, que parecía relajado, tuvo éxitos usando el jab desde el centro del ring, algún gancho zurdo a la contra y ciertas esquivas, pero en el segundo asalto la pegada de Vitor se dejó notar con consecuencias decisivas.
Primero, un duro directo de mano adelantada sacudió la cabeza del visitante que, al llevar a su rival a las cuerdas algo después, recibió un potente gancho zurdo a la contra que le hizo tocar la lona. Posteriormente, en un momento en el que el filipino alcanzó la distancia corta, “Valiente” conectó un directo diestro y un par de ganchos zurdos que llevaron al tapiz de nuevo a Dong Kwan Lee. El surcoreano amagó con levantarse, pero cuando estaba de rodillas se dejó caer a un lado para que el árbitro completase la cuenta.
De ese modo, mientras Dong Kwan Lee veía cortada su racha de ocho victorias y ofrecía una actuación peor aún que en su anterior salida de su país, Vitor defendía un cinturón menor WBO que le permitirá acceder al top 15 en futuras actualizaciones de la lista. Evidentemente, Vitor está todavía muy verde para encarar una andadura en la cumbre mundial, ya que, entre otras cosas, le falta precisión debido a una forma algo salvaje de desplegar sus ofensivas. Con todo, es joven, es fuerte y tiene una pegada nada desdeñable, por lo que si logra pulir su boxeo de la forma adecuada y le da algo de estabilidad, solidez y control, podría aspirar a lograr alguna victoria importante en el circuito de Filipinas que le sirva de trampolín para mayores objetivos.

In February 2019, fighting at super bantamweight, the young Filipino John Virgel “Valiente” Vitor 20(13KO)-2(1) suffered a sixth round KO loss in a national championship against veteran Mark Anthony Geraldo, defeat which led to a drastic change in his career. After a brief stint at featherweight, Vitor moved up to super featherweight, having already built a seven-fight winning streak (with six stoppages). His last win came on Thursday with a second round KO over former South Korean national champion Dong Kwan Lee 16(7KO)-3(2)-1.
In the first round Dong Kwan Lee, who seemed relaxed, had some success using the jab from the center of the ring, counter left hooks and a few dodges, but in the second round Vitor’s punch showed up with decisive consequences.
First, a hard jab shook the head of the visitor, who, taking Vitor to the ropes shortly after, received a powerful counter left hook that made him touch the canvas. A bit later, when the Filipino reached close range, “Valiente” landed a right straight and a couple of left hooks that brought Dong Kwan Lee back to the mat. The South Korean seemed to want to get up, but when he was on his knees he dropped to one side for the referee to complete the count.
In this way, while Dong Kwan Lee saw his eight-win streak end with an even worse performance than in his previous fight outside his country, Vitor defended a WBO minor belt that will allow him to access the top 15 in a future ranking update. Obviously, Vitor is still very green to face objectives at the world level, since, among other things, he lacks precision due to a somewhat wild way of deploying his offensives. However, he’s young and strong and has punch, so if he can hone his boxing the right way and gain some stability, solidity, and control, he could aspire to achieve a good win over a compatriot that could serve him as a springboard to bigger goals.
