El invicto peso pesado Arslanbek Makhmudov apaleó, legal e ilegalmente, a Michael Wallisch en triunfo en el primer round

Era inevitable que el potente peso pesado ruso Arslanbek “Lion” Makhmudov 16(15KO)-0 obtuviese un triunfo antes del límite enfrentándose a una piedra de toque de bajo nivel y escaso encaje como el alemán Michael Wallisch 23(16KO)-6(6), y de hecho el invicto cumplió con lo esperado venciendo en el primer round. No obstante, el triunfo de Makhmudov no tuvo nada de brillante.
Tras el tañido inicial, Makhmudov se abalanzó sobre su contrincante lanzando ganchos a la cabeza, puños a la nuca y empujones hacia abajo. Además, aguantó la cabeza de su rival con el brazo izquierdo y le golpeó con ganchos diestros, haciendo con una de estas acciones que Wallisch tocase la lona y el árbitro realizase cuenta. Poco después de la reanudación, un par de hooks más hicieron que el visitante de nuevo pusiese la rodilla en la lona.
El enfrentamiento no terminó ahí, sino que hubo tiempo todavía en el primer round para que Makhmudov perdiese un punto por reiteración en los golpes en la nuca y, con otros cuantos curvos y otro puño ilegal más, Wallisch sufriese un tercer knockdown. En cualquier caso, en el descanso antes del segundo round, Wallisch, cansado, con la nuca roja y que prácticamente no había lanzado ni un golpe, se retiró de la pelea.
Sin duda, Makhmudov es un boxeador fortísimo, con gran pegada y que no duda en ir más allá del reglamento cuando el árbitro se lo permite (algo que ha pasado bastantes veces ya), por lo que es un oponente peligroso. Con todo, en lugar de estar mejorando, parece estar involucionando, dando cada vez más muestras de tosquedad y torpeza compensadas con mera brutalidad. Así, y tras las brechas mostradas ante Carlos Takam, no encarará en un momento óptimo un 2023 que debería verle disputar ya su combate contra un rival de la cumbre, debiéndose tener en cuenta que era 4º WBC y 5º WBA antes de su victoria de la pasada noche.
Respecto al respaldo, la cosa fue muy mal para los intereses de Eye of the Tiger Management. Y es que, por un lado, la prospecta canadiense del peso superwélter Mary Spencer 7(5KO)-1, lejos de hacer una declaración de intenciones, sufrió su primera derrota con una decisión unánime (91-99, 93-97, 94-96) ante la belga Femke Hermans 14(5KO)-4(1), que hace ocho meses fue espectacularmente noqueada por Savannah Marshall. Por el otro lado, el peso medio canadiense Steven “Bang Bang” Butler 32(26KO)-3(3)-1 tuvo que trabajar para lograr una cuestionada victoria unánime (96-94, 97-93 y 99-91) ante la piedra de toque estadounidense Joshua “Young Gun” Conley 17(11KO)-5(2)-1.
Así, aunque Spencer podrá acceder a un mundial tarde o temprano teniendo en cuenta lo despoblada que está la división superwélter femenina, su futuro no parece tan deslumbrante como algunos aseguraban, mientras que Butler, pese a conservar su posición en los rankings, volverá a sufrir una derrota clara en cuanto se le haga subir un peldaño en nivel de dificultad.

It was inevitable that powerful Russian heavyweight Arslanbek “Lion” Makhmudov 16(15KO)-0 would get a stoppage victory against a low-level boxer with serious chin issues like the German Michael Wallisch 23(16KO)-6(6), and in fact the undefeated fighter did as expected winning in the first round. However, Makhmudov’s victory was anything but brilliant.
After the first bell, Makhmudov charged on his opponent, throwing hard hooks, punches to the back of the head and downward shoves. In addition, he held his opponent’s head with his left arm and hit him with right hooks, making Wallisch touch the canvas in one of these actions. The referee ruled it as a knockdown and, shortly after the restart, a couple more hooks sent the visitor back to the canvas.
The bout did not end there, but there was still time in the first round for Makhmudov to lose a point due to repeated blows to the back of the head and for a third knockdown suffered by Wallisch due to a few hooks and another illegal shot. In any case, at the break before the second round, a tired Wallisch, with the neck reddened and who hadn’t thrown punches decided to not continue in the fight.
Without a doubt, Makhmudov is a very strong boxer, with a great punch and who does not hesitate to go beyond the rules when the referee allows him to do so (something that has happened many times already), so he is a dangerous opponent. Yet instead of getting better, he seems to be regressing, showing more and more crudeness and clumsiness offset by sheer brutality. Thus, and after the flaws shown against Carlos Takam, he will not face 2023 in an optimal situation, something really concerning taking into account that he is ranked as WBC number 4 and WBA number 5 and that in the next season he should face his first fight against a top opponent.
Regarding the support, things went very badly for the interests of Eye of the Tiger Management. On the one hand, Canadian super welterweight prospect Mary Spencer 7(5KO)-1, far from making a statement, suffered her first defeat with a unanimous decision (91-99, 93-97, 94- 96) loss against Belgian Femke Hermans 14(5KO)-4(1), who eight months ago was spectacularly knocked out by Savannah Marshall. On the other hand, Canadian middleweight Steven «Bang Bang» Butler 32(26KO)-3(3)-1 had to work to achieve a unanimous decision victory (96-94, 97-93 and 99-91) over American Joshua “Young Gun” Conley 17(11KO)-5(2)-1.
Thus, although Spencer will be able to access a world title fight in the future considering the low quantity of boxers in the women’s super welterweight division, her future does not seem as dazzling as some claimed, while Butler, despite he maintained his position in the rankings, will suffer again a clear defeat as soon as he has to face a step up in competition.
