Martes 13 de diciembre
Tras perseguir durante diez asaltos a un Paul Butler centrado en intentar sobrevivir, en el undécimo episodio el top libra por libra japonés Naoya Inoue se anotó un knockout que le sirvió para aunar los cuatro cinturones mundiales del peso gallo. Miércoles 14 de diciembre
Sin dejar de hablar de la categoría del peso gallo, el miércoles el mexicano Willibaldo García batió por KOT en el séptimo asalto a su compatriota Víctor Méndez, demostrando una vez más su peligro y que tendría claras opciones de triunfo ante varios de los boxeadores clasificados en las listas oficiales. Viernes 16 de diciembre
El peso pesado ruso Arslanbek “Lion” Makhmudov sólo necesitó un asalto para derrotar al alemán Michael Wallisch, que a penas opuso resistencia pero que recibió bastantes acciones ilegales. En el respaldo Mary Spencer fue derrotada contra pronóstico y Steven Butler a duras penas logró un triunfo por decisión. Crónica del combate siguiendo el link.
Por lo que se refiere al prospecto cubano del peso supermedio Ernesbadi Begué, éste visitó la lona y tuvo bastante trabajo contra el brasileño Lucas de Abreu, aunque finalmente logró obtener una victoria por decisión unánime. Crónica y vídeo del combate siguiendo el link.
Respecto al enfrentamiento del peso pluma entre Raza Hamza 17(7KO)-1-1 y James Beech Jr. 15(2KO)-3(1), el primero sufrió la primera derrota de su carrera con una ajustada decisión unánime (96-95, 96-94 y 98-93), lo que le separará por el momento de sus ambiciosos objetivos en el circuito británico. Por último en cuanto al viernes, el campeón de Argentina del peso pluma Nicolás “Pitbull” Botelli 14(8KO)-7(4) cumplió con los pronósticos y logró un KOT en el cuarto round sobre un Fabián Orozco 28(10KO)-14(7)-4 que ni siquiera dio el peso, si bien es de suponer que al titular le esperarán retos de mucho mayor calado en la próxima temporada.
Sábado 17 de diciembre
La última velada del año de PBC terminó con una eliminatoria WBA que añadió un nombre destacado más a la cumbre de la interesante división del peso ligero. Y es que el prometedor Frank Martin derribó y derrotó ampliamente al invicto y bien valorado Michel Rivera, llevando su carrera a un nuevo nivel. Crónica del combate siguiendo el link.
También logró su mayor triunfo hasta la fecha el invicto peso supermedio ruso Vladimir Shishkin, que venció por clara decisión unánime su eliminatoria IBF del peso supermedio ante el excampeón mundial venezolano José Uzcátegui. Crónica del combate siguiendo el link.
En la restante eliminatoria de este evento, el filipino Vincent Astrolabio noqueó en el sexto asalto a Nikolay Potapov, por lo que es de esperar que acceda al mundial IBF del peso gallo en cuanto Naoya Inoue deje vacantes sus cuatro cinturones. Crónica del combate siguiendo el link.
En el respaldo previo a la cartelera principal, el peso superligero Omar Juárez, pese a perder tres puntos, venció a Austin Dulay, mientras que el peso medio Elijah García derrotó en el segundo asalto a Cruse Stewart. Vídeo de los combates siguiendo el link.
Pasando a la velada de BOXXER, su mal emparejado combate estelar terminó como no podía ser de otro modo, con el peso crucero británico Chris “The Gentleman” Billam-Smith 17(12KO)-1 noqueando a un rival con un nivel mucho más bajo como el kosovar Armend “The Bombardier” Xhoxhaj 14(7KO)-2(2), que fue vencido en el quinto asalto. Dado que Billam-Smith está clasificado en el top 5 de los tres organismos y parece que su promotora piensa apoyarle con firmeza en su persecución de un mundial, todo parece indicar que en 2023 éste afrontará la mayor pugna de su carrera, que se dice que podría ser un combate contra el titular IBF Jai Opetaia.
En cuanto al respaldo, el campeonato británico del peso semipesado Dan Azeez 18(12KO)-0 continuó su gran racha en el ámbito nacional batiendo por KOT en el octavo asalto a Rocky Fielding 30(18KO)-3(3), y ahora iniciará un camino en la escena continental, estando emplazado a pelear en marzo por el título UE contra Thomas Faure. Por su parte, el peso wélter Michael McKinson 23(2KO)-1(1) regresó a la senda del triunfo venciendo a los puntos (59-55) al nicaragüense Roberto “Dinamita” Arriaza 19(14KO)-5(3).
En la velada francesa los favoritos locales se hicieron con victorias, aunque con dispar claridad. El peso superwélter Souleymane Cissokho 16(9KO)-0 sólo pudo ganar por decisión mayoritaria (114-114, 115-113, 116-112) en su descenso al peso wélter ante Thulani Mbenge 19(15KO)-2, poco convincente resultado de un púgil que no está sólo centrado en el boxeo profesional (pretende participar en los próximos Juegos Olímpicos). Por su parte, Christian “Solide” Mbilli 23(20KO)-0 no combatió en el peso medio sino, como siempre, en el peso supermedio, logrando una amplísima victoria unánime (100-90, 100-90, 99-91) en su rodaje ante el estadounidense Vaughn “The Animal” Alexander 17(10KO)-7(1)-1, que debería ser sucedido en 2023 por una prueba de fuego.
Terminando con el artículo, se pueden destacar también estos otros resultados:
-El olímpico croata Luka Plantić 4(3KO)-0 por primera vez escuchó un veredicto como profesional venciendo por decisión unánime (100-90, 99-92 y 97-93) al armenio Khoren Gevor 35(17KO)-11(2). En 2023, Plantić continuará buscando un rápido ascenso, y en sus próximos combates seguramente se medirá ya a boxeadores en mejor estado de forma y con más ambición.
-El invicto peso supergallo filipino Carl Jammes “Wonder Boy” Martin 21(17KO)-0 sólo necesitó dos asaltos para terminar con el exaspirante mundial tailandés Komgrich Nantapech 31(22KO)-6(2), cerrando con la moral alta un año que no empezó de manera óptima (fue derribado y ganó ajustadamente a Ronnie Baldonado).
-El peso wélter mexicano Raúl “Cugar” Curiel 12(10KO)-0 también venció en el segundo asalto al venido a menos estadounidense Brad Solomon 29(9KO)-6(3), aunque necesitará triunfos en retos mucho más exigentes si quiere mostrar verdadera proyección en una categoría tan difícil como el peso wélter.

After chasing for ten rounds Paul Butler, who was focused on trying to survive, in the eleventh round the top pound-for-pound boxer Naoya Inoue scored a knockout with which he unified the four world bantamweight belts. Now Inoue plans to become undisputed champion at super bantamweight as well. Read more following the link.

Speaking of the bantamweight division, on Wednesday the Mexican Willibaldo García defeated his compatriot Víctor Méndez by TKO in the seventh round, showing once again his danger and that he would have good chances of winning against several of the boxers ranked in the official lists. Friday, December 16
Russian heavyweight Arslanbek “Lion” Makhmudov needed just one round to defeat German Michael Wallisch, who barely put up a fight but suffered quite a few illegal actions. Regarding the featherweight matchup between Raza Hamza 17(7KO)-1-1 and James Beech Jr. 15(2KO)-3(1), the former suffered the first loss of his career with a close unanimous decision (96-95 , 96-94 and 98-93), so for the moment his ambitious goals on the British level will be slowed down. Finally as for Friday, the Argentinian national featherweight champion Nicolás “Pitbull” Botelli 14(8KO)-7(4) did as expected scoring a fourth round TKO win over Fabián Orozco 28(10KO)-14 (7)-4, who did not even make weight. In any case, the titlist will have to face much more difficult challenges in the next season.
Saturday, December 17
PBC’s last event of the year ended with a WBA eliminator that added one more remarkable name to the top of the exciting lightweight division. Promising American Frank Martin knocked down and widely defeated the unbeaten, and highly rated, Michel Rivera, taking his career to a new level. Read more following the link.
Unbeaten Russian super middleweight Vladimir Shishkin also scored his biggest win to date, since he defeated former world champion José Uzcátegui by clear unanimous decision. Read more following the link.
In the remaining eliminator of this card, Filipino Vincent Astrolabio knocked out Nikolay Potapov in the sixth round, so he will fight in an IBF world bantamweight championship as soon as Naoya Inoue vacates his four belts. Read more following the link.
In the prelim fights before the main card, super lightweight Omar Juárez defeated Austin Dulay despite losing three points, while middleweight Elijah Garcia beat Cruse Stewart in the second round. Video of the fights following the link.
Moving on to the BOXXER evening, its mismatched main event ended with British cruiserweight Chris “The Gentleman” Billam-Smith 17(12KO)-1 knocking out an opponent with a much lower level like the Kosovar Armend “The Bombardier” Xhoxhaj 14(7KO)-2(2), who was defeated in the fifth round. Given that Billam-Smith is ranked in the top 5 of three organizations and it seems that his promoter intends to firmly support him in his pursuit of a world title bout, everything seems to indicate that in 2023 he will face the biggest fight of his career, which could be against IBF titleholder Jai Opetaia.
As for the undercard, British light heavyweight champion Dan Azeez 18(12KO)-0 continued his good streak at national level beating Rocky Fielding 30(18KO)-3(3) with an eight-round TKO. Azeez will now aim for continental titles, as he is scheduled to fight in March for the EU belt against Thomas Faure. For his part, welterweight Michael McKinson 23(2KO)-1(1) returned to winning ways by defeating Nicaraguan Roberto “Dinamita” Arriaza 19(14KO)-5(3) on points (59-55).
In the French evening, the local favorites were victorious, although with a quite different margin in the scorecards. Super welterweight Souleymane Cissokho 16(9KO)-0 could only win by majority decision (114-114, 115-113, 116-112) his fight moving down to welterweight against Thulani Mbenge 19(15KO)-2, an unconvincing result from a fighter who is not only focused on professional boxing (he intends to participate in the next Olympic Games). As for Christian “Solide” Mbilli 23(20KO)-0, he did not fight at middleweight but, as always, at super middleweight, achieving a wide unanimous decision victory (100-90, 100-90, 99-91) in his stay-busy bout against American Vaughn “The Animal” Alexander 17(10KO)-7(1)-1, which should be succeeded in 2023 by a decisive test.
These other results can also be highlighted:
-Croatian Olympian Luka Plantić 4(3KO)-0 for the first time heard a verdict as a professional, since he defeated Armenian Khoren Gevor 35(17KO)-11(2) by unanimous decision (100-90, 99-92 and 97-93). Plantić will keep seeking to advance fast in 2023, and in his next bouts he will surely face boxers in better shape and with more ambition.
-Undefeated Filipino super bantamweight Carl Jammes “Wonder Boy” Martin 21(17KO)-0 only needed two rounds to defeat Thai former world title challenger Komgrich Nantapech 31(22KO)-6(2), closing with high morale a year that did not start very well (he was knocked down by Ronnie Baldonado, who he narrowly beat).
-Mexican welterweight Raúl «Cugar» Curiel 12(10KO)-0 also defeated in the second round faded American Brad Solomon 29(9KO)-6(3), although he will need wins in much more demanding challenges if he wants to show true projection in a division as difficult as welterweight.
