Dado que un boxeador con buena carrera amateur, pero que padeció una inesperada derrota tres peleas atrás, como Anthony “The Magician” Sims Jr. 23(20KO)-1 se medía a una competente piedra de toque con un triunfo contra pronóstico reciente, y en el mejor año de su trayectoria, como Antonio Todd 14(8KO)-7(2), este parecía un interesante duelo para que ambos tratasen de afianzar sus posiciones. En él fue Sims quien logró una convincente victoria por decisión unánime que le permitió dar un buen paso adelante en su recuperación. Las puntuaciones fueron algo excesivas: 80-72, 80-72, 79-73.
En el primer tramo Todd hizo lo que pudo con rápidos jabs, algún gancho zurdo o curvos diestros para intentar mantener la pelea contendida, si bien Sims en general ya fue superior por su mayor frecuencia de ataques y una mejor gestión de los golpes de poder. Con el paso de los minutos esta tendencia se hizo más sólida aún, dado que Sims empezó a mostrarse todavía más firme con el jab y a impactar buenos puños en directo, cruzado diestro, uno-dos y hook zurdo.
Como Todd venía de buenas actuaciones, estaba físicamente bien preparado, cuenta con experiencia y no tiene un mal nivel, y como Sims no intensificó sus ofensivas demasiado, sino que las espació bastante, el no favorito evitó verse en apuros durante la mayoría de la pelea. Más aún habiendo un considerable número de clinches que contribuyeron a contener el ritmo del combate. Con todo, en el octavo y último round un gancho zurdo arriba dañó a Todd, que tiró de valentía para pasar los problemas, e incluso lanzó alguna ofensiva antes del tañido final, pero que no pudo evitar padecer una clara derrota.
El descenso del peso supermedio al peso medio por parte de Sims parece una gran decisión si puede dar el límite de la categoría sin sufrir demasiado. Y es que, además de que se encontrará con boxeadores menos grandes y potentes, actualmente el peso medio pasa por una cierta crisis en cuanto al nivel general de su top 15, habiendo muchos púgiles clasificados que no tienen más cualidades que Sims. Así, quizás el boxeador estadounidense pueda encontrar un camino provechoso para sus intereses si cuenta con el apoyo y el manejo adecuado por parte de su equipo en los despachos.

Given that a boxer with a good amateur career, but who suffered an unexpected defeat three fights ago, as Anthony “The Magician” Sims Jr. 23(20KO)-1 was facing a competent stepping stone with a recent upset win, and in the best year of his career, like Antonio Todd 14(8KO)-7(2), this seemed like an interesting duel for both of them to try to consolidate their positions. In it, it was Sims who pulled off a convincing unanimous decision victory that allowed him to take a good step forward in his recovery. The scores were somewhat excessive: 80-72, 80-72, 79-73.
In the first stretch Todd did what he could with quick jabs, some left hooks or right overhands to try to keep the fight close, although Sims in general was already superior due to his higher punch rate and a better management of power punches. As the minutes passed, this trend became even more solid, since Sims began to be even more firm with the jab and to connect good right hands, one-twos, left hooks, etc.
Since Todd was coming off good performances, was physically well-prepared, has experience and doesn’t have a bad level, and since Sims didn’t intensify his offensives too much, but separated them quite a bit, the underdog avoided serious trouble for most of the fight. Even more so with a considerable number of clinches that contributed to contain the rhythm of the bout. Still, in the eighth and final round a left hook hurt Todd, who dealt with the difficulties, and even threw some attacks before the final bell, but couldn’t avoid suffering a clear loss.
Sims’ decision to move down from super middleweight to middleweight seems like a great choice if he can make weight without suffering too much. In addition to having to battle boxers less big and less powerful, currently the middleweight division is going through a certain crisis in terms of overall level of its top 15 boxers. In other words, many ranked fights have less qualities than Sims. Thus, perhaps the American boxer can find a profitable path if he has the proper support and management by his team in the offices.
