Aunque el excampeón mundial filipino “Vicious” Vic Saludar 22(12KO)-6(2) es un peso mínimo de élite y en el futuro volverá a disputar peleas de gran calibre en la división, había padecido dos derrotas en sus dos últimas pugnas (ambas por decisión, una controvertida) y necesitaba regresar a la senda del triunfo. Esto lo hizo ante su compatriota Ariston “Double A” Atón 9(5KO)-6(2), un rival fogueado y con un par de buenas actuaciones fuera de su país del que Saludar se deshizo por knockout en el séptimo round.
Simplemente, Saludar era el boxeador superior, así que, tanto atacando con su directo diestro y su gancho zurdo como contragolpeando con estos mismos puños, por lo general anotó las mejores manos, logrando poner en ciertos apuros a Atón ya en el primer asalto. El no favorito posee coraje y apoyándose en él intentó lanzar ofensivas, si bien estas tuvieron mucha más voluntad que técnica y sus éxitos se vieron limitados por las esquivas de Saludar, que pudo eludir un buen número de golpes debido a la previsibilidad de los ataques de Atón. De hecho, en el tercer round, Atón cayó a la lona sin recibir golpe tras errar un puño.
Como el choque no tenía un gran ritmo y Saludar se mantuvo en el centro del ring sin preocuparse por presionar e intentar romper a su adversario, Atón pudo mantenerse en la pelea y seguir probando suerte con sus salteados ataques. Con todo, en el cuarto round lo que pareció una derecha recta a la contra de “Vicious” hizo que Atón tocase la lona.
Esto dejó claro que, en cuanto quisiese, el excampeón podía poner fin al duelo si se volcaba al ataque, pero se mantuvo controlando la pugna calmadamente, logrando de todos modos dejar tocado dos veces a Atón en el quinto round con duras y certeras derechas. Finalmente, en el séptimo episodio un hook zurdo al torso hizo a Atón arrodillarse en la lona y, dolorido, no pudo levantarse durante la cuenta del árbitro.
Pese a sus derrotas recientes, Saludar sólo ha caído al 6º puesto en el ranking WBA, por lo que combinándose, junto a su buen posicionamiento, su experiencia, su renombre, sus capacidades y su condición de excampeón, seguramente no tardará mucho en acceder a un nuevo combate importante contra un top 15 ante el que luchar por situarse en la parte más alta de la lista.
El vídeo oficial del combate, que encontraréis más abajo, tiene una calidad realmente baja, tanto que para muchos pude resultar inaguantable. Si alguien desea ver la pugna, esta empieza a partir de 2:49:00, y a Saludar se le puede identificar por la franja blanca que lleva su calzón.

Although Filipino former world champion “Vicious” Vic Saludar 22(12KO)-6(2) is an elite minimumweight and we will see him fighting again in important bouts for the division, he had suffered two losses in his last two fights (both by decision, one controversial) and needed to get back to winning ways. He did that against his compatriot Ariston “Double A” Atón 9(5KO)-6(2), a seasoned opponent with a couple of good performances outside his country that Saludar knocked out in the seventh round.
Saludar was simply the superior boxer, so both attacking with his straight right and left hook and counterpunching with these same punches, he generally landed the best hands, managing to put Atón in some trouble as early as the first round. The underdog has courage and, leaning on it, he tried to launch offensives, although these had much more will than technique and his successes were limited by the dodges of Saludar, who was able to avoid a good number of blows due to the predictability of Atón’s charges. In fact, in the third round, Atón even fell to the canvas (without being hit) after missing a punch.
Since the match did not have a high pace and Saludar stayed in the center of the ring without trying to press and wear down his opponent, Atón was able to stay in the fight and try his luck with his sporadic attacks. However, in the fourth round what seemed a straight right hand from «Vicious» made Atón touch the canvas.
This made it clear that, whenever he wanted, the former champion could end the duel if he attacked aggressively, but he kept calmly controlling the fight. However, he still managed to hurt Aton twice in the fifth round with hard and accurate right hands. Finally, in the seventh episode, a left hook to the body made Aton kneel on the canvas and he could not get up during the referee’s count.
Despite his recent defeats, Saludar has only fallen to the 6th place in the WBA ranking, so with this good position combined with his experience, his reputation, his skills and his status as former titlist, it will surely not take long for him to reach a new important fight against a top 15 boxer in which try to climb to the top of the list.
