En su mayor prueba hasta la fecha, el prospecto filipino John Paul Gabunilas 9(6KO)-1 simplemente no pudo lidiar satisfactoriamente con un rival muy experimentado, heterodoxo y zurdo (no se enfrentaba a un zurdo desde su debut). Así, aunque los jueces protegieron a Gabunilas con un injusto veredicto favorable, realmente su compatriota Jesse “Little Giant” Espinas 20(11KO)-6(1) mereció la victoria, a la vez que demostró que al prospecto todavía le queda muchísimo que aprender. El resultado fue de decisión mayoritaria y las puntuaciones de 95-95, de espantoso 96-94 y de un todavía más ridículo 97-93.
Como tantos otros jóvenes púgiles con cualidades, Gabunilas dio la sensación de que pensaba que tenía un nivel técnico superior al que realmente tiene, llevando la guardia demasiado abierta y dando muestras de exceso de confianza en muchos momentos. Sin embargo, no era capaz de utilizar su jab con solidez (durante largos tramos ni siquiera lo usó) y no encontraba el momento para apretar el gatillo, lo que en una pelea táctica ante un rival correoso y con oficio, le puso en dificultades claras.
Ya fuese con un jab inesperado, con un gancho arriba o abajo cuando su rival pensaba que había dejado de atacar, con una arremetida en el momento adecuado o sacando combinaciones de hooks al torso en corta, Espinas tuvo más acierto y un trabajo superior. En ocasiones Gabunilas llegó con algún buen directo aislado, algún uppercut de derecha a la contra o con otros puños, pero por lo general erró muchas manos, recurrió a demasiados clinches y tuvo evidentes brechas defensivas, no logrando lidiar con la fortaleza y la determinación de Espinas.
Como sólo tiene 22 años, Gabunilas tiene tiempo de sobra para evolucionar y mejorar, pero para ello necesita modificar su forma de encarar los duelos, en los que no debe dar por hecho que es superior sino que tiene que centrarse en intentar demostrarlo con la necesaria cadencia de golpes y la adecuada selección de puños, algo que no hizo ante Espinas. Si ajusta estos y otros elementos, quizás pueda llegar a tener un nivel cercano al del top 15 en el futuro, aunque ahora mismo esto parece improbable si no cambia antes su mentalidad.

In his biggest test to date, Filipino prospect John Paul Gabunilas 9(6KO)-1 simply couldn’t deal satisfactorily with a very experienced and unorthodox southpaw (he hadn’t faced a southpaw since his debut). Thus, although the judges protected him with an unfair favorable verdict, his compatriot Jesse “Little Giant” Espinas 20(11KO)-6(1) really deserved the victory and showed that Gabunilas still has a lot to learn. The result was a majority decision with scores of 95-95, an awful 96-94 and an even more ridiculous 97-93.
Like so many other talented young fighters, Gabunilas seemed to think that he had a higher technical level than he really does, keeping his guard too open and showing signs of overconfidence at many times. However, he was not able to use his jab solidly (during long stretches he did not use it at all) and he could not find the moment to pull the trigger, which in a tactical fight against a tough and seasoned opponent put him in clear difficulties.
With unexpected jabs, with opportunistic hooks up or down when his opponent thought he had stopped attacking, with well-timed lunges or throwing combinations of body shots at close range, Espinas had more success and a superior work. Sometimes Gabunilas unleashed a good isolated straight hand, a counter right uppercut or other punches, but generally he missed too many hands, resorted to too many clinches and had evident defensive flaws, failing to deal properly with Espinas’ strength and determination.
As he is only 22 years old, Gabunilas has plenty of time to evolve and improve, but to do so he needs to change the way he approaches the fights. That is to say, he should not take for granted that he is superior to his opponent and instead he has to focus on trying to prove it with the necessary punch rate and the proper selection of shots, something he did not do against Espinas. If he adjusts these and other elements, he might be able to get close to the top-15 level in the future, though right now that seems unlikely if he doesn’t change his mindset.
