Aunque es cierto que Leigh Wood necesitaba un largo descanso después del esfuerzo sobrehumano que realizó ante Michael Conlan, al que derrotó el pasado marzo, finalmente la temporada 2022 del británico fue menos interesante de lo que pudo parecer que sería. Y es que Wood no volvió a subirse al ring, mezclándose la cancelación de un combate ante Mauricio Lara con unos inacabables tiras y aflojas con la WBA y Leo Santa Cruz sobre una ordenada pugna mundialista que nunca se materializaba.
Saltando al presente, la campaña 2023 de Wood, que se convirtió finalmente en campeón mundial WBA del peso pluma de pleno derecho sin tener que pelear con Santa Cruz (éste dejó vacante su título), por lo menos arrancará pronto. Ha sido anunciado que el día 18 de febrero en el Motorpoint Arena Nottingham de Nottingham, Reino Unido, Wood encabezará una velada de Matchroom y DAZN enfrentándose al citado mexicano Mauricio Lara.
Al margen de las disputas y la tensión entre ambos respecto a si fue real o no la lesión de bíceps que llevó a Wood a aplazar el programado choque ante Lara el pasado septiembre, el duelo inevitablemente generará interés teniendo en cuenta que ambos son dos aguerridos, tenaces y resistentes púgiles que han dado muestras de sus capacidades en emocionantes peleas y que deberían ofrecer una gran batalla.
En las declaraciones adjuntas al anuncio oficial, Wood señaló:
“Mauricio ha hecho que las cosas sean personales entre los dos con la falta de respeto que ha mostrado respecto a mi lesión y mi país. Voy a enseñarle de lo que soy capaz. Te veo el 18 de febrero en Nottingham – ¡Y todavía campeón!”.
Por su parte, Lara afirmó:
“He estado esperado esta oportunidad durante dos años y no voy a desperdiciarla. En febrero de 2021 derroté a Warrington en Inglaterra, ahora en 2023 haré lo mismo con Wood. El título mundial WBA de las 126 libras se viene a México, eso se lo he prometido a mi hija, a mi familia, a mi equipo y a todo mi país. Tu hora ha llegado Leigh Wood, ninguna “lesión” puede salvarte de esto”.

Although it is true that British Leigh Wood needed a long rest after the superhuman effort he made against Michael Conlan, whom he defeated last March, in the end his 2022 season was less interesting than it seemed it would be. Wood did not get back into the ring in the year, since the cancellation of a fight against Mauricio Lara mixed with an endless tug of war with the WBA and Leo Santa Cruz over an ordered world title bout that never materialized.
Returning to the present, Wood’s 2023 campaign, after ultimately becoming full WBA featherweight champion without having to fight Santa Cruz (he vacated his title), will at least start soon. It has been announced that on February 18, at the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham in Nottingham, United Kingdom, Wood will headline a Matchroom Boxing and DAZN evening facing the aforementioned Mexican Mauricio Lara.
Letting aside the tension between the two boxers regarding whether or not the biceps injury that led Wood to postpone the scheduled clash against Lara last September was real or not, the duel will inevitably generate interest considering that both are brave, tenacious and resilient fighters who have shown their skills in exciting fights and that should offer a great match.

“Mauricio Lara has made things personal between us with the disrespect he showed me regarding my injury and my country,” said Wood. “I’m going to show him what I’m all about. See you on February 18 Nottingham – And Still!”
For his part, Lara stated:
“I have been waiting for this opportunity for 2 years and I am not going to waste it,” said Lara. “In February 2021 I beat Warrington in England, now in 2023 I will do the same with Wood. The WBA 126lbs World Title goes to Mexico, that I promised to my daughter, my family, my team and to my whole country. Your time has come Leigh Wood, no “injury” can save you now from this.”
