Eddie Hearn apunta a Tank Davis, Kell Brook y Pacquiao como posibles rivales de Conor Benn

En unas semanas se revelerá la “defensa”, o más bien excusa, de Conor Benn respecto a su doble positivo en control antidopaje, que todo apunta a que seguirá una línea similar a la del caso Ginny Fuchs (precedente en el que USADA, corrupta y patéticamente, exculpó a la olímpica estadounidense) para intentar fingir que está limpio. De todos modos, Eddie Hearn, quizás el promotor que peor se está comportando en la lucha contra el dopaje en los últimos años, ya ha señalado que, si no se produce una sentencia en su caso rápidamente, él y Benn están dispuestos a igualmente encarar pronto un retorno en una gran pelea. ¿Pero qué entiende Hearn por gran pelea?
Según él mismo señaló, esto pasaría por poner al peso wélter Benn frente a Gervonta Davis, Kell Brook o Manny Pacquiao, selección de oponentes que es tan sorprendente como espantosa. Es decir, está apuntando respectivamente a un pelea contra un peso ligero (Davis), contra un boxeador acabado y un año inactivo (Brook) y contra un boxeador retirado y que vendría de una derrota (Pacquiao). Por lo tanto, ha sido inevitable que esto haya causado indignación entre los fans.
Puede que estos nombres sólo hayan sido mencionados de forma aleatoria para intentar llamar la atención de la gente respecto a la carrera de Benn, y es verdad que parece más que improbable que PBC vaya a dejar que Davis pelee en Reino Unido contra un peso wélter o que Pacquiao vaya a poner fin a su retiro por este tipo de choque.
Sin embargo, las palabras de Hearn muestran dos cosas: que en adelante Benn está dispuesto a aceptar el rol de villano y que desde Matchroom Boxing son conscientes de que el boxeador no tiene el nivel (especialmente si reduce sus dosis) para enfrentarse a pesos wélter de élite en buenas condiciones físicas. Sólo así se entiende que puedan apuntar a boxeadores como los mencionados, ante los que Benn tendría tantas ventajas.
Por otro lado, aunque Pacquiao y Davis no sean adversarios viables, sí resulta perfectamente factible que Benn se llegue a medir a Kell Brook, un compatriota que está al borde del retiro y que espera simplemente una última gran bolsa pero que seguramente permitiría a Matchroom tener ganancias considerables gracias a los fans casuales.

In a few weeks, Conor Benn‘s «defense», or rather excuse, will be revealed regarding his double positive in anti-doping control, seeming that he will follow a line similar to that of the Ginny Fuchs case (a precedent in which USADA, corrupt and pathetically, exonerated the US Olympian) to try to pretend he’s clean. In any case, Eddie Hearn, perhaps the promoter who is behaving worst in the fight against doping in recent years, has already stated that, if there isn’t a quick ruling, he and Benn are willing to soon face a comeback in a big fight. But what does Hearn mean by a big fight?
According to him, this would mean putting the welterweight Benn against Gervonta Davis, Kell Brook or Manny Pacquiao, a selection of opponents that is as surprising as it is awful. That is to say, he is respectively targeting a fight against a lightweight (Davis), against a washed up boxer a year inactive (Brook) and against a retired fighter coming off a loss (Pacquiao). Therefore, it has been inevitable that this has caused outrage among fans.
These names may have just been thrown around randomly to try to draw people’s attention to Benn’s career, and it certainly seems more than unlikely that PBC will let Davis fight in the UK against a welterweight or that Pacquiao will end his retirement for this type of clash.
However, Hearn’s words show two things: that from now on Benn is willing to accept the role of villain and that the leaders of Matchroom Boxing are aware that the boxer does not have the level (especially if he reduces his PED intake) to face elite welterweights in good physical condition. This is the only way to understand that they can aim for boxers like those mentioned, against whom Benn would have so many advantages.
On the other hand, even if Pacquiao and Davis are not viable opponents, it is perfectly possible that Benn will face Kell Brook, a compatriot who is on the verge of retirement and who is simply waiting for one last big purse but that would surely allow Matchroom to make considerable profits thanks to casual fans.
