Varios medios han informado de que está muy cerca de concretarse un enfrentamiento entre el campeón mundial WBA-WBC-IBF del peso wélter Spence y el extitular mundial Keith Thurman, duelo proyectado para abril que estará pactado por encima del peso wélter, por lo que no tendrá cinturones en juego.
Esta inesperada decisión ha causado mucha confusión, puesto que, aunque aparentemente la WBA parece estar dispuesta a aceptar el choque sin título en juego, todavía está pendiente que lo acepten también el WBC y la IBF. Otros creen que es PBC quien quiere evitar el riesgo de que Spence pueda perder sus cinturones y se trunque la pelea por el título indiscutido ante Crawford. Finalmente, entre otras teorías, algunos piensan que está tanteando un ascenso al peso superwélter, que quiere tener ventajas sobre Thurman o que el equipo de Spence simplemente quiere intentar crear confusión respecto a sus verdaderas intenciones.

After the way things have been for years regarding a potential Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. clash, it was too optimistic to expect that they will finally battle in the first half of 2023. However, the situation didn’t need to get as complicated as it has in the last few hours.
Various media outlets have reported that a fight between the WBA-WBC-IBF welterweight champion Spence and former world titlist Keith Thurman is very close to being finalized. This duel is projected for April and above welterweight, so it will not have belts at stake.
This unexpected decision has caused a lot of confusion since, although the WBA seems to be willing to accept the match, it is still pending the approval from the WBC and the IBF. It should be noted that Thurman was selected as a WBC mandatory welterweight challenger, so in principle the sanctioning body should not grant permission for a fight without a belt at stake and over the division limit.
In any case, taking into account that Thurman accepts to fight in a non-title bout, and considering the way in which the Council has conducted itself in recent years, it would not be strange if the organization bends its rules again to give the green light to the clash.
On the other hand, there are many speculations as to why Spence wants this non-title fight. Some believe he has weight issues and wants to avoid the welterweight limit as much as possible. Others consider that he despises Thurman and considers him a mere tune-up, which is why he doesn’t want to give him a world title bout. Finally, among other theories, some think that he is testing a move up to super welterweight, that he wants to have advantages over Thurman or that Spence’s team simply wants to try to create confusion regarding his true intentions.
