Efe Ajagba derrotó a Stephan Shaw en silbado combate estelar de velada de Top Rank

El olímpico nigeriano Efe “The Silent Roller” Ajagba 17(13KO)-1 consiguió, en el combate estelar de la velada de Top Rank, su mayor victoria desde su derrota ante Frank Sánchez, puesto que derrotó por merecida decisión unánime al invicto estadounidense Stephan “Big Shot” Shaw 18(13KO)-1. Con todo, Ajagba siguió mostrando los fallos de siempre, ninguno de los dos tuvo una actuación brillante y el combate hizo que la gente silbase e incluso se marchase de la arena antes de hora. Las cartulinas fueron de justo triple 96-94.
Como se podía prever, el duelo fue táctico y contendido, mostrando ambos una cadencia de golpeo por lo general baja y apoyándose esencialmente en el jab. Así, en ocasiones la velocidad de manos de un Shaw más ágil fue el factor decisivo, mientras que en otras el alcance y una mejorada defensa por parte de Ajagba marcaron la diferencia. En cualquier caso, aunque el duelo estaba igualado, los espectadores no se mostraron satisfechos con el espectáculo ofrecido e hicieron notar su descontento.
Hubo algunos momentos en los que el estadounidense intentó presionar, pero la pelea se desarrolló básicamente con Shaw desplazándose cerca de las cuerdas, con Ajagba avanzando y con ambos teniendo dispares aciertos: en ocasiones el nigeriano llegó con un seco jab y alguna derecha ante un rival que dudó demasiado, y en otras el estadounidense impactó escasas contras ante un oponente al que volvió a faltarle mucho volumen de golpes.
Aun así, como esta vez Ajagba tuvo delante a un boxeador que tampoco dejó volar sus manos, que no fue tan eficaz en defensa o a la contra como él pensaba que estaba siendo y al que superó por número de golpes de poder y acometividad, la pelea no terminó siendo otra debacle para él. Al contrario, aunque no fuese haciendo mucho, finalmente “The Silent Roller” se puso por delante en las tarjetas y afianzó su posición llegando con alguna combinación estando Shaw en las cuerdas. En el tramo final quizás el local se anotó algún round a base de astucia con manos escogidas, pero esto llegó ya demasiado tarde, y entonces igualmente se pudo argumentar a favor del jab de Ajagba.
Esta era una oportunidad de oro para que Shaw intentase irrumpir en la parte alta del peso pesado, pero la desperdició siendo todavía menos activo de manos que quizás el púgil con aspiraciones del peso pesado actual con la peor cadencia de golpeo. Por su parte, Ajagba podría haber dado un golpe en la mesa, pero contrariamente, si bien tuvo alguna buena acción defensiva, siguió sin aprovechar sus potentes directos, contentándose con puntuar para lograr una decisión que no devolvió la fe en sus posibilidades futuras. Y es que, aunque podría regresar al top 15 de los organismos y seguramente alcanzará una pelea importante en 2023, de ser verdad el rumor que apunta a una pugna Ajagba vs. Jared Anderson, el primero podría estar a unos meses de sufrir su primer knockout.

On Saturday, the Nigerian Olympian Efe “The Silent Roller” Ajagba 17(13KO)-1 achieved, in the main fight of a Top Rank evening, his biggest victory since his defeat against Frank Sánchez, as he defeated by unanimous decision the unbeaten American Stephan «Big Shot» Shaw 18(13KO)-1. Still, Ajagba continued to show his usual flaws, neither of the boxers put in a brilliant performance and the match had people hissing and even leaving the arena early. The scorecards were a fair triple 96-94.
As expected, the duel was tactical and close, both having generally a low punch rate and relying essentially on the jab. Thus, at times the hand speed of a more agile Shaw was the deciding factor, while at others the reach and improved defense from Ajagba made the difference. In any case, although the fight was even, the spectators were not satisfied with the show offered and expressed their discontent.
There were a few moments where the American tried to press, but the fight basically unfolded with Shaw moving close to the ropes, with Ajagba coming forward and both getting mixed successes: on occasions the Nigerian landed a sharp jab and right hands on an opponent that hesitated too much, and in others the American connected a few counters against a rival who once again had an insufficient punch output.
Even so, since this time Ajagba was facing a boxer who was not throwing his hands either, who was not as effective in defense or countering as he thought he was being and whom he surpassed by number of power punches and aggressiveness, the fight didn’t end up being another debacle for him. On the contrary, although he wasn’t doing much, finally «The Silent Roller» took the lead on the scorecards and strengthened his position by connecting a few combinations while Shaw was on the ropes. In the final stretch, the local had his moments selecting his hands with cunning, but this came too late, and then it could also be argued in favor of Ajagba’s jab.
This was a golden opportunity for Shaw to try to break into the heavyweight top, but he blew it by being even less active with his hands than perhaps the current heavyweight with international aspirations with the worst punching rate.
For his part, Ajagba could have made a statement, but on the contrary, although he had some good defensive actions, he did not take advantage of his powerful straight shots, contenting himself landing soft hands to achieve a decision that did not restore faith in his future possibilities. Although he could return to the top 15 of the organizations and will surely reach an important bout in 2023, if the rumor that points to an Ajagba vs. Jared Anderson fight is true, the former could be a few months away from suffering his first knockout loss.
