Anthony Joshua y Jermaine Franklin alcanzan acuerdo definitivo para pelear en abril

El enfrentamiento Dillian Whyte vs. Jermaine Franklin demostró simplemente que el primero está acercándose de manera acelerada al final de su carrera y que ya no supone un gran riesgo para que Anthony Joshua se enfrente a él en una revancha. Sin embargo, después de que Joshua haya padecido dos derrotas consecutivas y que haya sufrido un severo revés psicológico en ellas, Matchroom Boxing quiere minimizar todo lo posible cualquier peligro mientras intenta reflotar al excampeón mundial británico.
Así, el retorno de Joshua el día 1 de abril en el O2 Arena de Londres, Reino Unido, se producirá ante el citado Franklin, boxeador por debajo del nivel del top 15 absoluto de la categoría, que no está clasificado y que a punto estuvo de ser noqueado en el último round por una de las peores versiones que se han podido ver de Whyte en los últimos años. Joshua y Franklin han alcanzado ya un acuerdo definitivo y se espera un anuncio oficial en los próximos días.
Es cierto que Franklin hizo todo lo que pudo en su pelea ante Whyte, que el veredicto de derrota por decisión mayoritaria que padeció fue cuestionable y que, en esta era, no se puede esperar que un boxeador que genera tantísimos ingresos como Joshua se arriesgue a padecer una tercer derrota consecutiva enfrentándose a un rival de élite en su retorno.
No obstante, y aunque el estadounidense Franklin puede ser considerado un rival aceptable por muchos dadas las circunstancias, de nuevo la selección de oponente final no ha coincidido con las declaraciones del promotor Eddie Hearn, que en varias entrevistas señaló que el público iba a estar entusiasmado por el adversario elegido e incluso insinuó que iba a ser un oponente de gran calibre.
Después de que Joshua presumiblemente derrote a Franklin, se espera que “AJ” se enfrente a lo que queda de Dillian Whyte en un gran estadio en verano, si bien ese supuesto “paso adelante” estará en torno al mismo nivel que su pelea de retorno.

The Dillian Whyte vs. Jermaine Franklin clash simply demonstrated that the former is fast approaching the end of his career and that he no longer poses much of a risk for Anthony Joshua. However, after Joshua suffered back-to-back defeats and a severe psychological blow in them, Matchroom Boxing wants to minimize any danger as they try to refloat the former world heavyweight champion.
Thus, Joshua’s return on April 1 at the O2 Arena in London, United Kingdom, will take place against the aforementioned Franklin, a boxer below the level of the top 15 of the division, who is not currently ranked and who was almost knocked out in the last round by one of the worst versions of Dillian Whyte that has been seen in recent years. Joshua and Franklin have already reached a definitive agreement and an official announcement is expected in the coming days.
It’s true that Franklin did his best in his fight against Whyte, that his majority decision loss was questionable, and that, in this era, a boxer who generates as much money as Joshua cannot be expected to risk suffering a third consecutive defeat facing an elite opponent in a bounce back fight.
However, and although the American Franklin may be considered an acceptable rival by many given the circumstances, once again the final selection of opponent has not coincided with the statements made by the promoter Eddie Hearn, who in several interviews said that the fans were going to be happy about their choice and even hinted that it was going to be a high-caliber opponent.
After Joshua presumably defeats Franklin, “AJ” is expected to take on what’s left of Dillian Whyte in a big stadium this summer, although that “step up” will be around the same level as his return fight.
