Parece que la derrota del peso wélter estadounidense Alexis “Lex” Rocha 22(14KO)-1 ante Rashidi Ellis en 2020 convenció a su promotora Golden Boy Promotions de que no era realista esperar que su púgil rindiese al nivel de la élite. Sin embargo, esto no significa que vayan a renunciar a conseguirle una importante oportunidad. Al contrario, existen rumores (apoyados por una probada reunión entre Golden Boy y Crawford) que apuntan a que Rocha podría ser el próximo rival de Terence Crawford.
Así, la estrategia de la promotora para Rocha se ha centrado en hacerle escalar pagando por títulos menores WBO a la vez que se enfrentaba a rivales sin opciones de triunfo como el del sábado, un veterano sustituto tardío como el ghanés George “Red Tiger” Ashie 33(25KO)-6(1)-1, que llevaba más de una década sin combatir con un rival clasificado. Así, Rocha se hizo con un triunfo en el séptimo asalto con un brutal knockout.
Desde el centro del ring los boxeadores hicieron al comienzo algunas pruebas con sus directos con escasos resultados, errando el zurdo Rocha varias izquierdas ante las sencillas acciones defensivas del visitante. A partir del segundo asalto “Lex” llevó a las cuerdas a Ashie, conectando algún buen gancho zurdo abajo, puños que no tardaron mucho en tener efecto sobre el veterano púgil.
El ghanés contragolpeó cuando estaba en las cuerdas con veloces hooks que alcanzaron con sorprendente facilidad a Rocha, e hizo lo que pudo para anticiparse intentado evitar ser arrinconando, pero estaba aceptando demasiados intercambios en la distancia corta y media ante un oponente más fuerte y pesado tras la rehidratación. Así, al final del tercer round un duro gancho diestro al rostro le terminó llevando a la lona. Ashie tuvo coraje en el cuarto asalto, luchando con sus curvos en cruces de golpes para intentar resistir, pero de nuevo se llevó la peor parte y un cruzado le estremeció.
Aunque estaba hostigando a un arrinconado púgil cerca del retiro y que es menos fuerte que él, Rocha no terminaba de romper el combate, y siguió encontrándose con réplica por parte de Ashie. Además, en el sexto round el africano le provocó un corte en el ojo izquierdo en un choque de cabezas. De todos modos, pese a la tenacidad mostrada, Ashie empezó a cansarse críticamente por estar inmerso constantemente en una intensa batalla, y en el séptimo round, tras varios fuertes izquierdazos, un gancho diestro a la cabeza lo derrumbó sin posibilidad de seguir.
¿Qué posibilidades tiene de triunfo Rocha ante Crawford? Prácticamente ninguna. ¿Por qué se podría llegar a llevar a cabo entonces el choque? Por eso mismo. Es decir, parece que Crawford está centrado en llevarse las mayores bolsas que le ofrezcan reduciendo al máximo los riesgos, hablándose de que otro posible rival este año podría ser Adrien Broner… De materializarse el Crawford-Rocha, en lugar de por ejemplo un Crawford vs. Vergil Ortiz, esto sólo mostraría hasta qué punto los aspirantes muy por debajo del nivel de la élite pueden conseguir oportunidades mundialistas a base de dinero y apoyo promocional y hasta qué punto ciertos boxeadores están dispuestos a eludir peleas difíciles.

It seems that American welterweight Alexis “Lex” Rocha’s 22 (14KO)-1 loss to Rashidi Ellis in 2020 convinced Golden Boy Promotions that it was not realistic to expect his fighter to perform at the elite level. However, this does not mean that the company will give up on getting his boxer an important opportunity. On the contrary, there are rumors (supported by a proven meeting between Golden Boy and Crawford) that Rocha could be Terence Crawford’s next opponent.
Thus, the promoter’s strategy for Rocha has focused on making him climb in the ranking by paying for WBO minor titles while facing boxers with no chance of winning, like it happened on Saturday: he battled the veteran Ghanaian, and late substitute, George «Red Tiger» Ashie 33(25KO)-6(1)-1, who had not fought a ranked opponent in more than a decade. Thus, Rocha scored a victory in the seventh round with a brutal knockout.
From the center of the ring, the boxers tested each other with straight shots at the beginning with few results, the southpaw Rocha missing several left hands due to the vistor’s simple defensive actions. From the second round, “Lex” took Ashie to the ropes, landing some good left hooks down, punches that didn’t take long to have an effect on the veteran fighter.
The Ghanaian counterpunched on the ropes with speedy hooks that caught Rocha with surprising ease, and he did his best trying to punch first looking to avoid being cornered, but he was accepting too many exchanges at close and medium range against a stronger and heavier opponent after the rehydration. Although he was constantly attacking a cornered fighter close to retirement and who is less strong than him, Rocha was having difficulties finishing the bout, continuing to meet with Ashie’s answer. However, despite the tenacity shown, Ashie began to tire critically due to being constantly immersed in an intense battle, and in the seventh round, after several hard lefts, a right hook to the head knocked him out cold.
What are the chances of Rocha winning against Crawford? Virtually none. Why then it is possible for the clash to happen? For that very reason. That is to say, it seems that Crawford is focused on taking the biggest purses he is offered while minimizing the risks, and there are rumors that another possible opponent for him this year could be Adrien Broner… If the Crawford-Rocha fight materializes, instead of, for example, a Crawford vs. Vergil Ortiz bout, this would only show to what extent the challengers far below the elite level can get world title opportunities based on money and promotional support and to what extent certain boxers are willing to avoid difficult fights.
