Prácticamente desde que la mexicana Erika “Dinamita” Cruz 15(3KO)-2 se proclamó campeona WBA ante Jelena Mrdjenovich en 2021, la puertorriqueña Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano 44(23KO)-2-1 pidió una pelea contra ella. Tras la espera, una vez que Serrano alcanzó el combate no desaprovechó la oportunidad, imponiéndose a la durísima y fiera Cruz por merecida decisión unánime (y justas puntuaciones de 98-92, 98-92 y 97-93) en una magnífica guerra.
Cruz sabía que una baja cadencia de golpes y mostrarse expectativa la conducirían a la derrota, por lo que en el inicio estuvo activa de manos y no cedió terreno, produciéndose buenos intercambios ante las ofensivas de Serrano. De todos modos, aunque al comienzo Cruz llegó con una buena cantidad de curvos, desde el tercer round “The Real Deal” empezó a ajustar su timing y a mostrarse más eficaz en defensa. Así Serrano pudo evitar manos con sus bloqueos a la vez que llegó con claros directos y ganchos de mano adelantada contra su adversaria, que sufrió un serio corte en la frente a causa de un choque de cabezas.
La habilidad, la mayor solidez en los bloqueos, la precisión y la mejor gestión de los tiempos de ataque de Serrano empezaron a darle éxitos consistentes sobre Cruz, que se centró demasiado en agachar la cabeza y lanzar volados sin mirar. Es decir, “Dinamita” estaba batallando con coraje y garra pero sin la suficiente precisión o astucia. De todos modos, aunque Cruz fue movida en el séptimo asalto, siguió luchando con todo lo que tenía para intentar alcanzar la victoria, generando trepidantes cruces de golpes.
Tras asaltos intensos consecutivos, en el octavo round Serrano, cuyo rostro mostraba a través de marcas e inflamaciones la dureza de la pugna, usó algo más el jab y su boxeo desde lejos, escogiendo sus ofensivas ante una Cruz que tenía problemas para ver por la gran cantidad de sangre que brotaba de su frente. De esa manera, entonces la puertorriqueña logró ganar asaltos reduciendo el esfuerzo y el riesgo, pero en el décimo episodio las púgiles cerraron la contienda intercambiando encarnizadamente en la distancia corta, acabando Cruz cansada y tocada.
Afortunadamente en esta ocasión no tenemos que especular sobre qué sucederá a continuación, sino que de manera inmediata se anunció que Serrano y Katie Taylor pelearán en una revancha el día 20 de mayo en Dublín, Irlanda. Esta es sin duda una cita ineludible en el calendario boxístico femenino de la temporada 2023, puesto que los fans pueden esperar de ella muy emocionantes asaltos y un resultado con consecuencias históricas.

Almost since the Mexican Erika «Dinamita» Cruz 15(3KO)-2 was crowned WBA champion against Jelena Mrdjenovich in 2021, the Puerto Rican Amanda «The Real Deal» Serrano 44(23KO)-2-1 asked for a fight against her. After the wait, once Serrano reached that bout, she did not waste the opportunity, beating the tough and fierce Cruz by well-deserved unanimous decision (and fair scorecards of 98-92, 98-92 and 97-93) in a magnificent war.
Cruz knew that a low punch rate and showing hesitation would lead her to defeat, so at the beginning she was active with her hands and held her ground, producing good exchanges against Serrano’s offensives. Anyway, although at the beginning Cruz landed a good amount of hooks, from the third round «The Real Deal» began to adjust her timing and to be more effective on defense. Thus, Serrano was able to avoid hands with her blocking and connected clear straight hands and lead hooks against her opponent, who suffered a serious cut to her forehead from a clash of heads.
Serrano’s skill, her superior solidity blocking, her accuracy and her better timing on the attack began to give her consistent successes over Cruz, who focused too much on ducking his head and throwing hayemakers without looking. That is to say, «Dinamita» was fighting with courage and grit but without enough precision or cunning. Still, even though Cruz was rocked in the seventh round, she continued to fight with everything she had to try to win, generating fast-paced and hard exchanges.
After consecutive intense rounds, in the eighth round Serrano, whose face showed the hardness of the fight through marks and small swellings, used the jab and her boxing from long range a little more, selecting her offensives against Cruz, who had trouble seeing through the large amount of blood flowing from his forehead. In this way, then the Puerto Rican managed to win rounds reducing the effort and risk, but in the tenth episode the fighters closed the championship exchanging furiously in the short distance, Cruz finishing the bout tired and hurt.
Fortunately, this time around we don’t have to speculate on what will happen next, since it was announced immediately after the bout that Serrano and Katie Taylor will fight in a rematch on May 20 in Dublin, Ireland. This is undoubtedly the most important date on women’s boxing schedule for the 2023 season, since fans can expect very exciting rounds and a result with historical consequences.
