Mario Barrios regresó a la senda del triunfo batiendo por KOT a “Lobito” Santiago

Seguramente el estadounidense Mario “El Azteca” Barrios 27(18KO)-2(1) más pronto que tarde se encontrará con un obstáculo insalvable en su andadura en el peso wélter, pero el sábado regresó a la senda del triunfo ante su público derrotando al puertorriqueño Jovanie “El Lobito” Santiago 14(10KO)-3(2)-1 por KOT en el octavo asalto.
Como casi cada vez que no se enfrenta a un boxeador de nivel alto, Barrios se mostró mucho más agresivo e incisivo ante un rival con un nivel inferior al suyo, avanzando y sacando sus rectos y hooks abajo para superar a un Santiago que no tenía demasiado que ofrecer como respuesta. En ocasiones “El Lobito” intentó arrojar una contraofensiva, pero midió mal la distancia y terminó provocando clinches que no le ayudaron a cambiar la tónica del combate.
Ocasionalmente, el puertorriqueño llegó con algunos hooks en corta ante los que Barrios no tuvo una gran reacción, pero esta vez “El Azteca” se replegó menos bajo ataque y pronto volvió a imponer su jab para crear espacios y sacó su directo diestro y su gancho zurdo abajo.
Tras unos intentos algo desesperados de Santiago neutralizados por Barrios, en el sexto round el estadounidense llegó sostenidamente con golpes claros que pusieron en apuros a su adversario, aunque no logró romperlo inmediatamente. Es decir, Barrios necesitó insistir en sus ataques hasta que en el octavo asalto llevó al tapiz al castigado Santiago con hooks al torso y después de la reanudación forzó la detención.
Siendo parte de la escuadra de PBC, militando en el peso wélter y teniendo una considerable cantidad de seguidores, a Barrios no le debería costar entrar al ring contra un boxeador de relieve. Sin embargo, que pueda lograr la victoria ante un contrincante de nivel alto en una división tan complicada está por verse (por no decir que es improbable), especialmente si se mide a un peleador que pueda explotar sus brechas en la distancia corta o a un boxeador muy móvil.

Surely the American Mario «El Azteca» Barrios 27(18KO)-2(1) sooner rather than later will face an insurmountable obstacle in his welterweight run, but on Saturday he returned to winning ways in front of his hometown fans defeating the Puerto Rican Jovanie “El Lobito” Santiago 14(10KO)-3(2)-1 by eight-round TKO.
As almost every time he does not face a high-level boxer, Barrios was much more aggressive and incisive against an opponent with a lower level than his, moving forward and connecting straight hands and hooks down to overcome Santiago, who did not have much to offer in response. Sometimes «El Lobito» tried to launch a counteroffensive, but he measured bad the distance and ended up causing clinches that did not help him change the trend of the fight.
Occasionally, the Puerto Rican landed some hooks at short range to which Barrios did not have a great reaction, but this time «El Azteca» stepped back less under attack and soon imposed his jab again to create space and connect his right hand and his lead hooks down.
After some somewhat desperate attempts by Santiago neutralized by Barrios, in the sixth round the American landed clear blows steadily that put the visitor in some trouble, although he did not manage to break him down immediately. Barrios needed to insist on his attacks until in the eighth round he brought the punished Santiago to the mat with body shots and, after the restart, forced the stoppage.
Being part of the PBC squad, fighting at welterweight and having a considerable following, Barrios shouldn’t have a hard time getting into the ring against a prominent boxer. Whether he can win against a top-level opponent in such a tough division, however, remains to be seen (not to say it is improbable), especially if he has to face a fighter who can exploit his flaws at close range or a highly mobile boxer.
