Con diferencia de una semana dos boxeadores que en el pasado reinaron en el peso supergallo intentaron coronarse en el peso superpluma, siendo uno de ellos un Emanuel Navarrete que fue derribado y que casi termina siendo derrotado por KOT a pesar de su triunfo final. El otro fue el también mexicano Rey Vargas 36(22KO)-1, que recibió todo un recital de boxeo a manos del estadounidense O’Shaquie “Ice Water” Foster 20(11KO)-2, quien controló con su técnica, cualidades físicas y talento natural un choque básicamente de un solo lado. El triunfo unánime de Foster tuvo puntuaciones de 119-109, de 117-111 y de un demasiado ajustado 116-112.
La mezcla de velocidad de manos, agilidad de piernas y control de la distancia de Foster muy pronto generó problemas tácticos para Vargas, que fue alcanzado por jabs, erró sus manos y recibió aislados buenos directos. El mexicano cayó a la lona al intentar evitar un jab al torso, pero no hubo cuenta, ya que Foster estaba pisando su pie derecho. En cualquier caso, el jab del estadounidense estaba a otro nivel, mientras que su eficacia defensiva y su astucia a la contra fueron también sensacionales.
El invicto Vargas intentó ajustar su táctica, a veces atacando, a veces desplazándose cediendo la iniciativa, pero en todo escenario sus directos de mano adelantada y sus golpes de poder se solían quedar cortos y era superado por los velocísimos jabs de un Foster que eventualmente conectaba también ganchos zurdos arriba y rectos diestros entre sus esquivas dinámicas y estáticas. En este sentido destacaron las defensas con el hombro de Foster, que eludió un sinfín de puños con este recurso.
Pasada la mitad Vargas tendió a centrarse más en desplazarse cercano a las cuerdas, lo que permitió a “Ice Water” hacer explosivas arremetidas con gancho zurdo que alcanzaron nítidadamente a su oponente, que sólo eventualmente fue competitivo con contraofensivas basadas en rápidas andanadas de curvos o de rectos. Estos éxitos de Vargas fueron algo más comunes en el último tercio, en el que ganó algunos rounds, pero en el décimo y el undécimo Foster volvió a hacer valer sus afilados directos y su gran control de la distancia para neutralizar cualquier amago de reacción antes de llegar con varios buenos derechazos en el último episodio.
A menudo no se tiene en cuenta que ciertos boxeadores no poseen realmente un gran nivel, sino que el enfrentarse a rivales mucho más pequeños que ellos es lo que les permite reinar y que de medirse a púgiles de su tamaño no lograrían ni un ápice de sus éxitos. Esto quedó claro con Vargas, uno de tantos otros púgiles que dan pesos ridículamente bajos para sus grandes dimensiones y que en su primer duelo ante un rival con un tamaño algo similar fue completamente dominado. De todos modos, es justo decir que, por un lado, Foster tiene cualidades técnicas fuera de lo común y, por el otro, que Vargas había tenido en su carrera varios resultados controvertidos favorables incluso ante púgiles más pequeños (Hovhannisyan, Kameda, etc.).
En cualquier caso, ahora Foster ha irrumpido a lo grande en la cima del peso superpluma mundial, en la que parece perfectamente capacitado para derrotar a los tres restantes campeones, siendo estos Shavkat Rakhimov, Emanuel Navarrete y Héctor Luis García.

Within a week of each other, two boxers who reigned at super bantamweight in the past tried to be crowned at super featherweight, one of them being Emanuel Navarrete, who was knocked down and almost ended up being defeated by TKO despite his final victory. The other was the also Mexican Rey Vargas 36(22KO)-1, who received a boxing masterclass at the hands of American O’Shaquie “Ice Water” Foster 20(11KO)-2, who dominated with his technique, physical qualities and natural talent a basically one-sided clash. Foster’s unanimous decision win had scores of 119-109, 117-111 and a too close 116-112.
Foster’s mix of hand speed, leg agility and distance control soon created tactical problems for Vargas, who was hit by jabs, missed his hands and received isolated good straight rights. The Mexican fell to the canvas trying to avoid a jab to the torso, but there was no count, since Foster was stepping on his right foot. In any case, the American’s jab was on another level, while his defensive efficiency and his cunning counterpunching were also sensational.
The undefeated Vargas tried to adjust, sometimes attacking, sometimes moving giving up the initiative, but in every tactical scenario his lead hands and power shots usually fell short and he was outmatched by the very fast jabs of Foster, who eventually connected left hooks up and right straight punches in between his dynamic and static dodges. In this sense, Foster’s shoulder rolls stood out, since he avoided endless punches with this defensive resource.
Past the half of the fight, Vargas tended to focus more on moving close to the ropes, which allowed “Ice Water” to make explosive lunges with left hooks that landed cleanly on his opponent, who was only eventually competitive with counteroffensives based on quick barrages of hooks or straight hands. These successes by Vargas were somewhat more common in the last third, in which he won a few rounds, but in the tenth and eleventh episodes Foster once again used his sharp shots and his great distance control to neutralize any threat of reaction before striking with several good right hands in the last round.
It is often not taken into account that certain boxers do not really have a great level, but rather facing opponents much smaller than them is what allows them to reign, and if they battled boxers of their size they would not achieve the same degree of success. This became clear with Vargas, one of the many fighters who make ridiculously low weights for his large size and who in his first bout against an opponent with a somewhat similar size was almost completely dominated. In any case, it is fair to say that, on the one hand, Foster has unusual technical qualities and, on the other, that Vargas had had several controversial favorable results in his career, even against smaller fighters (Hovhannisyan, Kameda, etc. ).
Be as it may, Foster has now broken into the summit of the world super featherweight division in a big way, weight class in which he seems perfectly capable to defeat the three other champions, these being Shavkat Rakhimov, Emanuel Navarrete and Héctor Luis García.
