De manera verdaderamente excepcional, por fin Golden Boy Promotions ofrecerá un combate con sentido encabezando una de sus veladas, ya que este sábado, en el Fox Theater de Pomona, Estados Unidos, se producirá una eliminatoria WBC del peso supergallo en la que se enfrentarán el excampeón mundial mexicano Luis “Pantera” Nery 33(25KO)-1(1) y el exretador mundial armenio Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan 21(17KO)-3.
Para muchos de entrada podría parecer que Nery es amplísimo favorito, pero lo cierto es que no es así, puesto que desde que ascendió al peso supergallo ha tenido constantes actuaciones por debajo de las expectativas, ha encadenado cambios de entrenador (mostrando problemas de indisciplina) y en su último combate de relieve, ante Carlos Castro, logró una cuestionable victoria por la mínima. En cambio, Hovhannisyan ha sido durante años uno de los grandes tapados de la categoría, siendo abiertamente evitado por nombres destacados, ofreciendo incontables grandes actuaciones y padeciendo su única derrota reciente de forma polémica ante Rey Vargas.
Por ello, y teniendo en cuenta que últimamente Nery está evaluando muy mal sus cualidades y está intentando pelear tácticamente en lugar de apabullar ofensivamente y que en su mayor reto hasta la fecha sucumbió mental y físicamente ante la garra de Brandon Figueroa, no es para nada seguro que el mexicano vaya a lograr el triunfo. Quizás, si avanza con gran agresividad y tiene la máxima frecuencia de golpes posible sin sobreexponerse demasiado al ataque podría generar problemas. Pero si Nery duda o si plantea una pelea táctica, “Crazy A” utilizará su errático, heterodoxo pero eficaz boxeo con embestidas para llevarle a aguas profundas y poner a prueba una vez más su resistencia a la presión.
Respaldo
Aunque el combate estelar tiene buen nivel, el resto de la velada será otro sinsentido más a los que nos tiene acostumbrados ya Golden Boy Promotions, con peleas con abrumadores favoritos. Las dos con mayor relieve del respaldo muestran claramente la deriva tan espantosa que la promotora ha adoptado en los últimos años.
En uno de los combates un peso supermedio que no llega ni a mediocre, y con un positivo en control antidopaje, como Shane Mosley Jr. 18(10KO)-4 se enfrentará al mexicano Mario Alberto Lozano 33(24KO)-10(2), boxeador tres años y medio inactivo y que no gana una pelea desde 2018. En el otro, el buen peso mosca Ricardo Sandoval 20(15KO)-2 buscará regresar a la senda del triunfo enfrentándose al nicaragüense Jerson Ortiz 17(8KO)-6, púgil que no derrota a un boxeador con récord positivo desde 2018.

Surprisingly, Golden Boy Promotions will finally offer a good fight headlining one of its cards, since this Saturday, at the Fox Theater in Pomona, United States, Mexican former world champion Luis “Pantera” Nery 33(25KO)-1(1) and Armenian former world title challenger Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan 21(17KO)-3 will clash in a WBC super bantamweight eliminator.
For many, it might seem that Nery is an overwhelming favorite, but the truth is that this is not the case. Since he moved up to super bantamweight he has had constant performances below expectations, has had various coach changes (showing indiscipline problems) and in his last important fight, against Carlos Castro, he achieved a questionable victory by narrow difference. On the other hand, Hovhannisyan has been for years one of the division’s dark horses, being openly ducked by rated fighters, offering countless great performances and suffering his only recent loss in a controversial decision to Rey Vargas.
For this reason, and taking into account that lately Nery has been assessing his own qualities very poorly and is trying to fight tactically instead of attacking aggressively, and that in his biggest challenge to date he succumbed mentally and physically to Brandon Figueroa’s grit, it is not at all guaranteed that the Mexican will win. Perhaps if he moves forward and has the higher punching rate possible without getting too overexposed he could cause problems. But if Nery hesitates or if he chooses a tactical fight, “Crazy A” will use his erratic, unorthodox but effective boxing with lunges to push him into deep waters and test his resistance to pressure once again.
Undercard
Although the main event has a good level, the rest of the evening will be another nonsense by Golden Boy Promotions with one-sided fights. The two bouts with the greatest caliber on the support clearly show the concerning drift that the promotional company has adopted in recent years.
In one of the bouts, a not even mediocre super middleweight, with one positive doping test, as Shane Mosley Jr. 18(10KO)-4 will face Mexican Mario Alberto Lozano 33(24KO)-10(2), a boxer that has been inactive for the past three and a half years and that has not won a fight since 2018. In the other fight, a good flyweight like Ricardo Sandoval 20(15KO)-2 will seek to return to winning ways by facing Nicaraguan Jerson Ortiz 17(8KO)-6, a journeyman that has not defeated a boxer with a positive record since 2018.
This event will be offered by DAZN on Saturday from 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT, 1:00 a.m. in the UK.
