Cheavon Clarke fue incapaz de vencer antes del límite, “El Profeta” Ruiz se anotó tres knockdowns y derrotó a Yafai

En un principio se suponía que el prospecto del peso crucero Cheavon Clarke 5(4KO)-0 iba a combatir contra su compatriota Dec Spelman, si bien finalmente se enfrentó al sustituto panameño Israel Duffus 20(17KO)-9(4), modesto peso semipesado con récord parcial de 1-4, y una inactividad de más de un año, que el invicto derribó cuatro veces pero no pudo noquear. El resultado fue una decisión unánime con puntuaciones de 98-88, 98-88 y 98-90.
En los primeros rounds Duffus llegó con algunas buenas manos en gancho zurdo y cruzado diestro aprovechando su ventaja en experiencia, pero Clarke le dañó con un uppercut diestro en el tercer asalto y posteriormente le golpeó con algunos duros curvos más. Como en tantas otras peleas Duffus empezó a cansarse pronto y, aunque hizo lo que pudo para intentar dar trabajo con sus contras, cada vez fue golpeado con más nitidez por los cruzados y ganchos del favorito hasta que fue tambaleado en el quinto asalto.
Finalmente, en el sexto episodio Duffus fue derribado dos veces por los golpes de poder de Clarke, que sumó otro knockdown más en el séptimo con un cruzado de derecha. Sin embargo, la pelea no terminó ahí, sino que alcanzó la última campana debido a la incapacidad de Clarke de dar la suficiente continuidad y solidez a sus ofensivas, encimándose a menudo y lanzando de manera entrecortada puños sin el suficiente recorrido. De todos modos, Duffus fue derribado una cuarta vez por un hook diestro la cabeza en los últimos instantes.
“El Profeta” venció como visitante
El argentino Diego Alberto “El Profeta” Ruiz 24(12KO)-6(1) ha pasado el último año y medio combatiendo contra oponentes con aspiraciones internacionales y ofreciendo ante casi todos ellos peleas muy igualadas. Por ello, midiéndose a un Gamal “The Beast” Yafai 19(11KO)-3 con enormes brechas y que ha padecido dificultades ante rivales menos exigentes que él, no fue realmente sorprendente que Ruiz se hiciese con un triunfo por decisión unánime y puntuaciones de 98-89, 97-90 y 97-91.
Después de un primer round en el que Yafai avanzó con confianza y tiró sus manos, Ruiz aguantó más el centro del ring y derribó al local con un par de cruzados a la cabeza, hostigándolo peligrosamente en la reanudación. En el tercer round Yafai intentó atacar para compensar el knockdown, pero terminó tocando el tapiz de nuevo por una derecha. En esos momentos el británico era estremecido por muchos golpes, pero siguió luchando con valentía, terminó recuperándose un tanto y tuvo éxito en el cuarto y el quinto round conectando hooks arriba y abajo en intercambios en la distancia corta.
De todos modos, aunque lidiando con el cansancio y el desgaste Yafai siguió esforzándose valientemente hasta el final, Ruiz impactó contundentes curvos y rectos antes de anotarse una tercera caída con un cruzado zurdo a la contra en el último round. Así, “El Profeta” puso el sello definitivo a la mayor victoria de su carrera hasta la fecha, que sin duda le garantizará nuevas buenas oportunidades.

Cruiserweight prospect Cheavon Clarke 5(4KO)-0 was originally supposed to fight his compatriot Dec Spelman, but he ultimately faced the Panamanian substitute Israel Duffus 20(17KO)-9(4), a low-level light heavyweight with a 1-4 partial record, and an inactivity of more than a year, that he dropped four times but he couldn’t knock out. The result was a unanimous decision with scores of 98-88, 98-88 and 98-90.
In the first rounds Duffus landed a few good hands in left hook and right overhand taking advantage of his experience, but Clarke hurt him with a right uppercut in the third round and subsequently hit him with some more hard hooks. As in so many other fights, Duffus began to tire early and, although he did what he could to try and give work with his counters, he was hit more and more cleanly by the favorite’s hooks until he was staggered in the fifth round.
Finally, in the sixth round Duffus was knocked down twice by power shots from Clarke, who added another knockdown in the seventh with a right hand. However, the fight didn’t end there, but reached the final bell due to Clarke’s inability to give enough continuity and solidity to his offensives, often getting too close and throwing his punches too sporadically. In any case, Duffus was dropped a fourth time by a right hook to the head in the last seconds.
“El Profeta” won as a visitor
Argentinian Diego Alberto “El Profeta” Ruiz 24(12KO)-6(1) has spent the last year and a half fighting opponents with international aspirations and offering close fights against almost all of them. Therefore, facing a boxer as Gamal “The Beast” Yafai 19(11KO)-3 with huge flaws and who has suffered difficulties against less demanding opponents than him, it was not really surprising that Ruiz won by unanimous decision and scores of 98-89, 97-90 and 97-91.
After a first round in which Yafai moved forward confidently and threw his hands, Ruiz held the center of the ring more and dropped the local fighter with a couple of hooks to the head, attacking him dangerously when the bout resumed. In the third round Yafai tried to be aggressive to make up for the knockdown, but he ended up touching the mat again due to a right hand. At that moment the Brit was shaken by many blows, but he bravely kept fighting, recovered a bit and had success in the fourth and fifth rounds connecting hooks up and down in exchanges at short range.
In any case, although dealing with fatigue Yafai continued to offer a tenacious effort until the end, Ruiz received him with forceful hooks and straight hands before dropping him for the third time with a counter right hook in the last round. In that way, “El Profeta” put the final seal to the biggest victory of his career to date, which will guarantee him new good opportunities.
