Casi exactamente un año estuvo el título IBF sin ser puesto en juego debido a que Josh Taylor, tras su controvertido triunfo sobre Jack Catterall, decidió tirar su carrera y su prestigio por la borda con un comportamiento consistentemente carente de profesionalidad y de dignidad. Pero al fin el sábado se coronó a un nuevo monarca mundial, dado que el puertorriqueño Subriel “El Orgullo de Maternillo” Matías 19(19KO)-1 derribó y derrotó en cinco asaltos al invicto argentino Jeremías “Jere” Ponce 30(20KO)-1(1) para capturar su primer cetro.
Si la pelea iba a ser una dura guerra, ¿para qué esperar? Esto es lo que pareció pensar Ponce, que desde el primer round saltó sobre su oponente y arrojó golpes de poder curvos con gran agresividad desde la distancia corta y media-corta. La apuesta era increíblemente arriesgada ante un tremendo pegador como Matías, que primero buscó bloquear con calma y que seguidamente empezó a trabajar con contundencia con sus ganchos en los intercambios, logrando estremecer y sacudir a Ponce en la última parte del segundo asalto.
Pese a estas dificultades, entonces “Jere” mostró un tremendo coraje y en el tercer y el cuarto round volvió a cargar al ataque con andanadas de curvos y derechazos, alguno de los cuales movió un tanto a su rival. Con todo, en general Matías parecía resistir mejor los golpes y generar más daños con los suyos, sacudiendo hacia atrás la cabeza de su adversario al final del cuarto round con un gancho zurdo. Así, la batalla continuó con descarnados y constantes intercambios hasta que al final del quinto episodio Matías dañó y derribó a Ponce con una combinación de hooks. El púgil reaccionó durante la cuenta y llegó al descanso.
Con las cosas de esa manera, y teniendo en cuenta la garra que había evidenciado hasta este momento, era de suponer que Ponce saldría a por todas antes de que “El Orgullo de Maternillo” le noquease, pero la esquina del argentino decidió que debía ahorrarse los golpes hasta la derrota y señaló que iban a abandonar antes del comienzo del sexto episodio, algo a lo que “Jere” no pareció querer oponerse.
Tras el enfrentamiento, muchos fans, que estaban disfrutando con el que consideraban ya un candidato a combate del año, manifestaron estar decepcionados con el abandono de un invicto ante la primera caída que padeció en su primer campeonato mundial, en el que además estaba siendo competitivo, y pusieron en duda el coraje tanto de Ponce como de su esquina. De todos modos, hay que tener en cuenta que en el duelo había combatido con tremenda garra, que había llegado a una situación en la que parecía muy difícil que pudiese ganar y que pesa mucho en el recuerdo de algunos de los rivales de Matías lo que le sucedió a Maxim Dadashev combatiendo contra él…
Por otro lado, respecto a Matías, desde su derrota ante Petros Ananyan ha quebrado a tres imbatidos y se ha desquitado ante el propio Ananyan, continuando con su 100% de triunfos antes del límite y dando muestra de un enorme peligro ofensivo. Así, que ahora haya logrado un cinturón mundial sólo es la materialización del prestigio que se ha ido construyendo en la división con su incontenible agresividad y pegada, que le hacen tanto un boxeador amenazante como entretenido de ver. Sin embargo, si como se espera Jack Catterall disputa un mundial ante el titular WBC Prograis, a Matías podría no tardar en llegarle un muy difícil reto, que pondrá a prueba su solidez como monarca, ante un gran tapado de la división como el uzbeko Shohjahon Ergashev.

For almost exactly one year the IBF title was not put at stake because Josh Taylor, after his controversial victory over Jack Catterall, decided to destroy his career and his prestige with consistently unprofessional and discreditable behavior. Finally on Saturday a new world monarch was crowned, since Puerto Rican Subriel «El Orgullo de Maternillo» Matías 19(19KO)-1 knocked down and defeated the unbeaten Argentinian Jeremías «Jere» Ponce 30(20KO)-1(1) in five rounds to capture his first title.
If the fight was going to be a hard war, why wait? This is what Ponce seemed to think, as from the first round he charged against his opponent and threw power punches with great aggressiveness from close and medium-close range. It was an incredibly risky bet to fight in that way against a tremendous puncher like Matías, who first sought to block calmly and then began to work forcefully with his hooks in exchanges, managing to rock and shake Ponce in the latter part of the second round.
Despite these difficulties, then «Jere» showed tremendous courage, as in the third and fourth rounds he attacked with barrages of hooks and right hands, some of which rocked his opponent a bit. However, overall Matías seemed to take punches better and do more damage with his own, shaking his opponent’s head backwards late in the fourth round with a left hook. Thus, the battle continued with hard and constant exchanges until, at the end of the fifth episode, Matías hurt and knocked down Ponce with a combination of hooks. The boxer reacted during the count and reached the break.
With things that way, and taking into account the grit that he had shown up to this moment, it was to be assumed that Ponce would go all out before “El Orgullo de Maternillo” knocked him out. But the Argentinian’s corner decided that they had to prevent the boxer from receiving the blows until the defeat and stated that they were going to quit before the beginning of the sixth round, something to which “Jere” did not seem to oppose.
After the bout, many fans, who were enjoying what they already considered a candidate to fight of the year, expressed their disappointment with the end. The fact of an undefeated boxer quitting after the first knockdown he suffered in his first world championship bout, in which he was being competitive, prompted many to question the courage of both Ponce and his corner. In any case, it must be taken into account that in the match he had fought with tremendous tenacity, that he had reached a situation in which it seemed very difficult for him to win and that many Matías’ opponents have always on their minds what happened to Maxim Dadashev…
On the other hand, regarding Matías, since his defeat against Petros Ananyan, he has crushed three unbeaten records and has beat Ananyan himself, maintaining his 100% knockout ratio and showing an enormous offensive danger. Thus, the fact that he has now won a world belt is only the materialization of the prestige that he has earned in the division with his irrepressible aggressiveness and punch, which makes him a boxer as threatening as entertaining to watch. However, if, as expected, Jack Catterall faces a world title fight against the WBC beltholder Prograis, Matías could have to fight soon in a very difficult challenge, which would test his solidity as a monarch, against a dark horse in the division like the Uzbek Shohjahon Ergashev.
