Cuando el estadounidense Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa 23(18KO)-1-1 empezó a despuntar en el boxeo profesional muchos pensaron que era sólo un producto de marketing y no un verdadero púgil; no pocos señalaron que estaba siendo promocionado sólo debido a que es hermano del excampeón mundial Omar Figueroa y a que se considera que tiene buena apariencia. Con todo, unos años más tarde es difícil que alguien pueda cuestionar su valía como boxeador si ha visto sus combates y conoce su récord.
En las últimas temporadas Figueroa ha aplastado a Luis Nery y a un Carlos Castro al que Nery sólo pudo vencer de forma cuestionable y ajustada. Además, en una unificación de coronas ante el incansable y muy hábil Stephen Fulton, próximo rival de Inoue y que en su último combate dominó completamente las acciones ante el duro exmonarca Daniel Román, Figueroa ofreció un ritmo absolutamente increíble, ofreciendo uno de los combates del año 2021. En él, Figueroa perdió por decisión mayoritaria debido a un veredicto que en general es considerado polémico o al menos inexacto.
Habiendo dejado atrás el peso supergallo para militar en el peso pluma, algunos piensan que quizás no sea tan peligroso como en la categoría inferior o que quizás su boxeo extremadamente agresivo no se podrá sustentar por mucho tiempo antes de una dura derrota. Sin embargo, para intentar contradecirlos, Figueroa combatirá este sábado por el título interino WBC del peso pluma contra el excampeón mundial filipino Mark “Magnífico” Magsayo 24(16KO)-1 en el combate estelar de un evento de PBC desde el Toyota Arena en Ontario, Estados Unidos.
Magsayo parece en estos momentos un estupendo test para Figueroa o para cualquier otro peso pluma con aspiraciones en la cumbre, ya que es fuerte, tiene precisión y destreza con golpes aislados y posee tenacidad. Asimismo, en su récord cuenta con victorias sobre Julio Ceja y Gary Russell Jr. (a quien destronó poniendo fin a su larguísimo reinado) y en su única derrota derribó en una ocasión al actual monarca WBC Rey Vargas, por lo que ha mostrado saber rendir a un nivel alto y tiene experiencia de calidad.
Aun así, Figueroa es lógicamente considerado el favorito en el combate. Pese a que empató contra el citado Ceja, Figueroa ha evolucionado desde entonces. Además, lo cierto es que Magsayo iba perdiendo a los puntos antes de noquear a Ceja y que el mexicano había acumulado mucho castigo en sus peleas recientes. Por otro lado, aunque tuvo mucho mérito, la victoria de Magsayo sobre Russell llegó ante un boxeador lesionado en un brazo, mientras que ante Vargas tuvo muchas dificultades tácticas.
Por ello, teniendo en cuenta que Magsayo no tiene un ritmo regular en sus combates y que padece graves bajones de actividad, un Figueroa que es muy consistente y que tiene una altísima cadencia parece en posición de poder utilizar su volumen de golpes para lograr la victoria. Con todo, quizás el empuje del estadounidense favorezca que Magsayo no se pueda tomar periodos de relax y que se vea obligado a luchar con dureza constantemente, siendo el tagalo peligroso con sus manos inesperadas. En cualquier caso, más allá de que si Figueroa muestra buen encaje debería poder vencer, el hecho es que es lógico pensar que ambos ofrecerán una muy entretenida guerra que, una semana después del Matías-Ponce y de su repentino final, quizás resulte más satisfactoria aún para los espectadores.

En el combate de semifondo el estadounidense, excampeón mundial unificado del peso superwélter, Jarrett “Swift” Hurd 24(16KO)-2 pondrá fin a cerca de dos años de inactividad combatiendo en el peso medio contra el mexicano José Armando “Toro” Reséndiz 13(9KO)-1. En circunstancias normales Hurd sería visto como abrumador favorito ante un boxeador sin ni un ápice de su experiencia y que fue vencido por un Marcos Hernández lejos del nivel del top 15. De todos modos, muchos consideran que Hurd ha perdido no sólo rendimiento, sino también moral, y que ya no volverá a ser lo que fue, especialmente valorando que su inactividad se produjo tras una derrota contra pronóstico ante el criticado Luis Arias.
Pese a ello, sobre el papel, y hasta que el púgil no demuestre lo contrario, Hurd debería poder ganar el encuentro si aprovecha las embestidas frontales de su rival de forma adecuada. Sin embargo, si Hurd no está al 100% (sobre todo mentalmente), el fuerte y tenaz Reséndiz podría ofrecerle una dura pugna.
La emisión de Showtime de este evento se iniciará con una prueba de fuego para dos peso medio como el uruguayo Amilcar Vidal 16(12KO)-0 y el estadounidense Elijah Lorenzo García 13(11KO)-0. Vidal era valorado como un muy buen prospecto con mucha pegada hasta que generó ciertas dudas contra Immanuwel Aleem, combate tras el cual ha tenido un rendimiento no demasiado convincente ante rivales de nivel menor. Por su parte, García es un jovencísimo púgil (19 años) zurdo y con buena carrera amateur pero que disputa con este de lejos su mayor test hasta la fecha.
Así dos invictos se enfrentarán en un choque en el que se jugarán catapultar sus carreras pero en el que tendrán que demostrar que son capaces de lidiar con la presión y con un boxeador motivado y dispuesto a apartar de su camino los obastáculos hacia objetivos mayores.
El evento Figueroa-Magsayo será emitido por Showtime en Estados Unidos desde las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 de la madrugada en hora española.

When American Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa 23(18KO)-1-1 began to stand out in professional boxing, many thought that he was just a marketing product and not a true fighter; many even pointed out that he was being promoted only because he is the brother of former world champion Omar Figueroa or because he is considered to have good looks. Still, a few years later, it’s hard for anyone to question his worth as a boxer if he’s seen his fights and knows his record.
In recent seasons Figueroa has crushed Luis Nery and Carlos Castro, whom Nery could only beat by narrow and questionable decision. In addition, in a unification against the tireless and very skilled Stephen Fulton, Inoue’s next opponent and who in his last fight completely dominated the tough former titlist Daniel Román, Figueroa offered an absolutely incredible pace, both delivering one of the fights of the year in 2021. In it, Figueroa lost by majority decision due to a verdict that is generally considered controversial or at least inaccurate.
Having left the super bantamweight division behind to move up to featherweight, some think he might not be as dangerous as he was at the lower weight class or that his extremely aggressive boxing might not last long before a hard defeat. However, to try to contradict them, Figueroa will fight this Saturday for the WBC interim featherweight title against Filipino former world champion Mark “Magnífico” Magsayo 24(16KO)-1 in the main event of a PBC card from the Toyota Arena in Ontario, United States.
Magsayo right now looks like a very good test for Figueroa or any other featherweight with aspirations in the top, as he is strong, has precision and ability with isolated shots and possesses tenacity. Also, in his record he has victories over Julio Ceja and Gary Russell Jr. (whom he dethroned ending his very long reign) and in his only defeat he knocked down once current WBC monarch Rey Vargas, so he has shown that he knows how to perform at a high level and has quality experience.
Even so, Figueroa is logically considered the favorite in the matchup. Despite the fact that he fought to a draw against the aforementioned Ceja, Figueroa has evolved since then. In addition, the truth is that Magsayo was losing on points before knocking Ceja out and that the Mexican had accumulated a lot of punishment in his recent bouts. On the other hand, although it was a very meritorious success, Magsayo’s victory over Russell came against a boxer with an injured arm, while against Vargas he had many tactical difficulties.
For these reasons, and taking into account that Magsayo does not have a regular pace in his fights and that he suffers serious drops in activity, a boxer like Figueroa, who is very consistent and has a very high work rate, seems in position to use his volume of punches to achieve the victory. All in all, perhaps the American’s aggressiveness could make that Magsayo will not have periods of relaxation and will force him to fight hard constantly, something the dangerous Filipino could exploit with his unexpected hard hands. In any case, beyond the fact that if Figueroa shows a good chin he should be able to win, it is logical to think that both will offer a very entertaining war that, a week after the Matías-Ponce clash and its sudden end, may be even more satisfactory for the fans.

In the co-feature, American, former unified super welterweight champion, Jarrett “Swift” Hurd 24(16KO)-2 will put an end to nearly two years of inactivity fighting at middleweight against Mexican José Armando “Toro” Reséndiz 13(9KO)-1. Under normal circumstances Hurd would be seen as the overwhelming favorite against a boxer without quality experience and who was beaten by a boxer far from the top 15 level as Marcos Hernández. Still, many think that Hurd has lost not only performance, but also morale, and that he will no longer be what he was, especially considering that his inactivity occurred after an upset defeat against Luis Arias.
In any case, on paper, and until the fighter proves otherwise, Hurd should be able to win the match if he takes advantage of the frontal charges of his opponent properly. However, if Hurd isn’t at a 100% (particularly mentally), the strong and tenacious Reséndiz could offer him a very tough matchup.
The Showtime broadcast of this event will begin with a decisive test for two middleweights such as Uruguayan Amilcar Vidal 16(12KO)-0 and American Elijah Lorenzo García 13(11KO)-0. Vidal was rated as a very good prospect with a big punch until he generated doubts against Immanuwel Aleem, fight after which he has had unconvincing performances against lower-level boxers. For his part, García is a very young (19 years old) southpaw with a good amateur career but who faces by far his biggest fight to date.
Thus, two undefeated boxers will face each other in a clash in which they could catapult their careers, although they will have to show that they are capable of dealing with the pressure and with a motivated fighter willing to use his opponent as a springboard to bigger things.
The Figueroa-Magsayo event will be broadcast by Showtime in the United States from 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT, 2:00 a.m. in the United Kingdom.
