La andadura en el peso pesado del ruso Murat “Iron” Gassiev 30(23KO)-1 ha sido lenta durante los más de dos años que se ha prolongado hasta ahora, pero el viernes se pusieron las bases sólidamente para que por fin ingrese en una clasificación mundial.
Y es que, por un lado, medios rusos apuntaron a que Gassiev ha recibido la nacionalidad armenia, lo que podría evitar que sufriese las consecuencias de tener exclusivamente la nacionalidad rusa. Por otro lado, y más importante aún, el viernes se anotó una rápida victoria sobre el invicto estadounidense Mike Balogun 20(16KO)-1(1) en un combate que, tras el retorno de los púgiles rusos al ranking WBA, tuvo un título menor de dicho organismo en juego. Gassiev batió a Balogun por KO en el segundo asalto.
Para que su oponente no pudiese medir su timing, Gassiev no tiró a penas ningún golpe durante el primer asalto y gran parte del segundo, dejando que su zurdo oponente se moviese por el ring sacando jabs y directos arriba y abajo que él bloqueaba. Con todo, repentinamente, en el segundo round Gassiev lanzó e impactó un fuerte cruzado diestro que sorprendió a Balogun y lo arrojó a la lona. El púgil estaba aturdido, y no reacción durante la cuenta, así que el combate terminó en ese momento.
Dado que sus cuatro combates en el peso pesado han durado combinadamente ocho asaltos, es decir una media de dos rounds por pelea, no se puede analizar con demasiada profundidad cuál es el rendimiento en el peso pesado de Gassiev más allá de ser evidente que la gran pegada que tenía en el peso crucero la ha trasladado a la categoría máxima. De todos modos, eso no es poco, contando también con encaje, buenos bloqueos y una infravalorada astucia. Así, y sumando ahora un triunfo sorprendemente fácil ante un oponente invicto, sólo queda esperar a verlo en nuevos tests de creciente dificultad para ver hasta qué punto llega su amenaza en el peso pesado.
Bayona sumó sexto triunfo
En el combate coestelar, el prospecto cubano del peso superwélter Luis Miguel Bayona 6(4KO)-0 derrotó por KOT en el tercer asalto al resistente uzbeko Muzaffar Rasulov 9(6KO)-4(1), que pareció tener problemas en su brazo izquierdo.
En el comienzo el zurdo Bayona tomó la iniciativa e impuso su precisión con golpes rectos, lo que obligó a Rasulov a reaccionar. El no favorito acortó los espacios y lanzó hooks con tenacidad, puños que fueron contestados por las combinaciones uppercut-gancho del hábil Bayona. No obstante, aunque conectó algunos buenos curvos a la cabeza, en un cierto momento Rasulov empezó a retroceder a la vez que sacudía su brazo izquierdo. La pelea siguió y hubo algunos buenos intercambios más, pero el uzbeko no pudo lidiar con su lesión y terminó abandonando entre el tercer y el cuarto episodio.

The heavyweight run of Russian Murat “Iron” Gassiev 30(23KO)-1 has been slow during the two and a half years that it has lasted until now, but on Friday the foundations were laid solidly for him to finally enter a world ranking.
On the one hand, Russian media pointed out that Gassiev has received Armenian nationality, which could prevent him from suffering the consequences of having exclusively Russian nationality. On the other hand, and even more importantly, on Friday he scored a quick victory over undefeated American Mike Balogun 20(16KO)-1(1) in a fight that, after the return of the Russian fighters to the WBA ranking, had a minor title of said organization at stake. Gassiev defeated Balogun by second round KO.
To prevent his opponent to be able to time him, Gassiev threw hardly any punches for the first round and much of the second, letting his southpaw opponent move around the ring jabbing and throwing straight punches up and down that he blocked. Suddenly, however, in the second round Gassiev connected a hard right hand that surprised Balogun and sent him to the canvas. The fighter was stunned, and did not react during the count, so the fight ended then.
Given that his four heavyweight bouts have lasted a combined time of eight rounds, that is to say an average of two rounds per fight, Gassiev’s heavyweight performance cannot be analyzed in too much depth beyond the obvious fact that the big punch that he showed at cruiserweight has transferred well to the highest weight class. Still, that’s not something of small importance, and he also has a solid chin, good blocking and an underrated cunning. Thus, now that he has scored a surprisingly easy victory against an undefeated opponent, all that remains is to wait and see him in new tests of increasing difficulty to assess how much of a threat he is at the heavyweight division.
Bayona scored sixth win
In the co-main event, Cuban super welterweight prospect Luis Miguel Bayona 6(4KO)-0 defeated tough Uzbek Muzaffar Rasulov 9(6KO)-4(1) by TKO in the third round. However, Rasulov’s defeat came due to problems with his left arm.
At the beginning, the southpaw Bayona took the initiative and imposed his precision with straight shots, forcing Rasulov to react. The underdog closed the distance and threw hooks tenaciously, punches that were answered by uppercut-hook combinations from the skillful Bayona. In any case, although he landed some good hooks to the head, at one point Rasulov started to back off while moving his left arm. The fight continued, and there were some more good exchanges, but the Uzbek couldn’t deal with his injury and ended up refusing to continue between the third and fourth rounds.
