Antes de que Figueroa y Magsayo saltasen al ring en el combate principal del evento de PBC, el excampeón mundial unificado Jarrett “Swift” Hurd 24(16KO)-3(1) regresó intentando reflotar su carrera. Sin embargo, lo que se encontró fue un nuevo varapalo a sus aspiraciones ante el mexicano José Armando “Toro” Reséndiz 14(10KO)-1, que le derrotó por KOT en el décimo asalto.
Aunque pocos lo recuerdan ya, en el pasado, antes de convertirse en una apisonadora con avance frontal, Hurd ofreció buenas actuaciones boxeando sin iniciativa, algo que quiso intentar recuperar inicialmente ante Reséndiz. Con todo, habiendo dedicado ya tanto tiempo a intentar abrumar con su tamaño y frecuencia a sus contrincantes, Hurd ha involucionado técnicamente y no pudo tener éxito ante Reséndiz, que cerca de las cuerdas le golpeó con buenos hooks zurdos a la cabeza además de con cortos directos.
Por ello, pronto “Swift” empezó a avanzar e intentar intercambiar curvos una vez más, pero desde que sufrió su derrota ante Julian Williams y ascendió al peso medio ya no se muestra ni mucho menos tan potente e intratable, así que Reséndiz no cedió apenas terreno y usó su buena mano adelantada para seguir conectando los golpes más significativos. En ocasiones, Hurd impactó un buen uppercut diestro a la cabeza o un hook de derecha al torso, o incluso intentó ofrecer una esquiva en philly shell, pero por lo general Reséndiz trabajó con más regularidad y solidez.
Hurd estaba atrapado en una situación complicada, ya que no estaba cómodo ni avanzando ni retrocediendo y se enfrentaba a un boxeador más contundente, ambicioso y tenaz. Así, cuando Hurd empezó a dar muestras de cansancio pasada la mitad las cosas sólo fueron a peor para el estadounidense, que llegó con alguna buena mano en los intercambios pero recibió un buen número de nítidos hooks por parte del “Toro”, quien se beneficiaba de su menor envergadura en el cuerpo a cuerpo. Finalmente, Hurd intentó ajustar guerreando o moviéndose, pero nada sirvió, sufriendo los efectos de sus constantes descuidos defensivos a través de directos y ganchos que le sacudieron antes de que, en el décimo round, el médico decidiese que tenía un corte en el labio demasiado grave como para dejarle seguir.
Si sólo fuese por esta derrota, tampoco sería tan grave. Pero en conjunto la situación no es nada buena para Hurd: es un púgil que está involucionando, que ya no puede abrumar y dañar a sus rivales tras ascender de división, que encadena dos derrotas y que ya ni siquiera puede batir a rivales por debajo del nivel del top 15. Por ello, el futuro no pinta bien para la carrera del exmonarca. En cambio, aunque Reséndiz, de 24 años, recibió un importante revés cuando perdió su combate contra Marcos Hernández, ahora se anota la mayor victoria de su carrera, que le catapultará a grandes oportunidades dentro del entramado de PBC.

Before Figueroa and Magsayo stepped into the ring in the main event of the PBC card, former unified world champion Jarrett “Swift” Hurd 24 (16KO)-3(1) returned trying to start refloating his career. However, what he found was a new blow to his aspirations against the Mexican José Armando “Toro” Reséndiz 14(10KO)-1, who defeated him by TKO in the tenth round.
Although few remember it, in the past, before becoming a frontal steamroller, Hurd offered good performances boxing without initiative, something he wanted to try to recover initially against Reséndiz. Still, having already spent so much time trying to overwhelm his opponents with his size and output, Hurd has regressed technically and was unable to succeed against Reséndiz, who pinned him on the ropes and hit him with good left hooks to the head as well as short straight punches.
For this reason, “Swift” soon began to move forward and tried to exchange hooks once again. However, since he suffered his defeat against Julian Williams and moved up to middleweight, he is no longer as powerful as he was, so Reséndiz did not give up much ground and used his good lead hand to continue connecting the most significant blows. On occasions, Hurd landed a good right uppercut to the head or a right hook to the torso, or even tried to dodge using a philly shell, but generally Resendiz worked more consistently and solidly.
Hurd was in a difficult situation, as he was neither comfortable going forward nor going backward and was up against a more forceful, ambitious and tenacious boxer. Thus, when Hurd began to show signs of fatigue after the half point, things only got worse for the American, who landed some good hands in the exchanges but received a notable number of clear hooks from “Toro”, who took advantage of his smaller reach at close range. Finally, Hurd tried to adjust brawling or moving, but to no avail, suffering the effects of his constant defensive oversights through hooks and straight hands that rocked him before, in the tenth round, the doctor decided that a cut in his lip was too bad to let him continue.
If it were only for the defeat, it wouldn’t be so bad. But overall, the situation for Hurd is really complicated: he is a fighter who is regressing, who can no longer damage his opponents after moving up, who has lost his last two fights and who can no longer even beat a boxer below the top 15 level. Therefore, the future does not look good for the former champion. On the other hand, although Reséndiz, who is 24, suffered a setback when he lost his fight against Marcos Hernández, now he scored the biggest victory of his career, which will catapult him to great opportunities in PBC events.
