Con sólo 21 años y un prometedor futuro por delante, el mexicano Luis “Koreano” Torres 18(10KO)-0 de momento necesita expandir su bagaje contra oponentes motivados y en buen estado de forma, motivo por el cual la pasada noche se enfrentó a su compatriota Misael “Pichón” Cabrera 13(10KO)-2, un boxeador sólo dos años mayor que él y que únicamente había perdido en una visita a Canadá ante el exranqueado Mathieu Germain. En este buen encuentro, el estelar de la velada de ProBox Promotions, ambos púgiles tuvieron sus momentos, pero Torres terminó haciéndose con el triunfo por decisión unánime y tarjetas acertadas de 96-93, 96-93 y un excesivo 98-91.
Después de que el zurdo Torres tuviese un fácil primer round en el que persiguió a su adversario y conectó izquierdas y ganchos diestros, se produjo un emocionante segundo round: Cabrera empezó a presionar hasta que fue frenado por el jab y los ganchos de Torres pero, cuando “Koreano” pasó a atacar con peligro, este último recibió una dura derecha que pareció dejarle tocado, aunque no le impidió derribar a “Pichón” con una combinación de hooks a la cabeza poco después.
En adelante la pelea tuvo una tónica cambiante pero con un esquema más o menos regular, con Torres avanzando e imponiendo su precisión hasta que Cabrera intentaba realizar una contraofensiva que dejaba buenos intercambios pero en la que el favorito conectaba por lo general las mejores manos. No fue hasta la mitad que se produjo un cambio, ya que Cabrera pareció cansarse un tanto (se le “despegó” múltiples veces la cinta) pero recurrió a un aumento de movilidad acompañado de escogidos puños aislados, esencialmente en directo diestro, que le dieron resultados positivos.
El punto álgido del éxito de Cabrera llegó en un séptimo round en el que sostuvo una ofensiva con curvos y conectó varios claros golpes de poder, si bien entonces “Koreano” reaccionó. Atacando con determinación, el invicto llevó a las cuerdas a su adversario y le golpeó con series de puños que incluso provocaron una pequeña hemorragia nasal. En el noveno round Cabrera lanzó una nueva contraofensiva, pero en los intercambios en corta que se produjeron Torres fue superior, si bien “Pichón” sí logró conectar duras manos en el décimo asalto que dañaron un tanto al favorito.
Sin duda, estos fueron otros diez buenos asaltos de experiencia para Torres, que con esta defensa de un título menor podría llegar a aparecer en el top 15 WBC en una próxima actualización (ahora mismo es 19º). En estos momentos muchos, lógicamente, no podrán imaginárselo derrotando a boxeadores de la cúspide, pero no se debe pasar por alto que a Torres todavía le faltan muchos años para alcanzar la fase en la que los púgiles suelen alcanzar su pico de rendimiento pero, aun así, muestra en cada combate evidentes cualidades y hoy por hoy ya parece capacitado para aspirar al triunfo ante rivales de la parte baja del top 15.

At only 21 years old and with a promising future ahead of him, Mexican Luis «Koreano» Torres 18(10KO)-0 currently needs to expand his experience against motivated opponents in good shape, which is why last night he faced his compatriot Misael “Pichón” Cabrera 13(10KO)-2, a fighter only two years older than him and who had only lost battling in Canada against former ranked boxer Mathieu Germain. In this good match, the main event of the ProBox Promotions evening, both fighters had their moments, but Torres ended up taking the victory by unanimous decision and fair cards of 96-93, 96-93 and a too wide 98-91.
After the southpaw Torres had an easy first round chasing down his opponent and landing lefts and right hooks, the fight delivered a thrilling second round: Cabrera began to press until he was stopped by Torres’s jab and hooks but, when “Koreano” began to attack dangerously, the latter received a hard right that seemed to hurt him, although it did not prevent him from dropping “Pichón” with a combination of hooks to the head shortly after.
From then on the fight had variations but in a more or less regular trend, with Torres moving forward and imposing his precision until Cabrera tried to launch a counteroffensive that generated good exchanges, in which the favorite generally connected the best shots. It was not until halfway through that there was an important change, since Cabrera seemed to get a bit tired (he had «problems» with the tape multiple times) but resorted to an increase in mobility accompanied by selected isolated punches, essentially straight right hands, which gave him positive results.
The high point of Cabrera’s success came in a seventh round in which he sustained an attack with hooks and landed several clear power punches, although then “Koreano” reacted. Attacking with determination, the undefeated boxer brought his opponent to the ropes and hit him with barrages of shots that even caused a small nosebleed. In the ninth round Cabrera threw a new counteroffensive, but in the exchanges at short range that took place Torres was superior, although «Pichón» did manage to land hard hands in the tenth and final round that hurt the favorite somewhat.
Without a doubt, these were ten good rounds of experience for Torres, who with this defense of a minor title could appear in the WBC top 15 in a future update (right now he is number 19). At this time many, logically, cannot imagine him defeating elite boxers, but it should not be overlooked that Torres still has many years to go before reaching his peak and that, even so, he shows obvious qualities in each fight and he already seems capable of aspiring to achieve victory against some opponents in the bottom of the top 15.
