Después de su ruptura con Matchroom Boxing, que le ha costado más de un año de inactividad, el británico Lawrence Okolie 19(14KO)-0 realizó el sábado su debut con BOXXER afrontando una defensa obligatoria ante el imbatido neozelandés David Light 20(12KO)-1. Este primer paso en su nueva andadura Okolie lo resolvió con un triunfo por decisión unánime que le dejó libre para, a continuación, encarar defensas voluntarias o incluso unificaciones. Las cartulinas fueron 116-112, 117-110, 119-108.
La ventaja en alcance (y en tamaño) de Okolie era enorme, lo que, combinado con sus agarres (perdió un punto por ellos en el undécimo asalto) y su desorden, generó dificultades desde el comienzo para Light, que recibió varios claros derechazos. Con todo en su contra, Light le puso voluntad, y a base de persistencia logró acortar los espacios y aprovechar que el campeón en ocasiones se enredaba a sí mismo para llegar con ciertos claros ganchos diestros. No obstante, estos éxitos no tuvieron la solidez necesaria para amenazar seriamente a Okolie, que una vez más, como en casi toda su carrera, aburrió al público, recibió abucheos y silbidos y no convenció, ni siquiera aunque en el décimo y en el undécimo asalto dañó a Light.
Según afirman algunos rumores, el plan es que Okolie se enfrente a Richard Riakporhe, ahora compañero de escuadra con quien sostiene una competencia desde hace años. De todos modos, se enfrente a este o a otro boxeador, el hecho es que a estas alturas muchos fans intentarán huir de ver un combate más de Okolie, uno de los peores campeones mundiales de la actualidad.

After he stopped working with Matchroom Boxing, split which has cost him more than a year of inactivity, this Saturday British Lawrence Okolie 19(14KO)-0 made his debut on a BOXXER card facing a mandatory defense against undefeated New Zealander David Light 20(12KO)-1. This first step in his new journey ended with Okolie scoring a unanimous decision win, so now he is free to face voluntary defenses or even unifications. The scorecards were 116-112, 117-110, 119-108.
Okolie’s reach advantage was huge, which, combined with his clinches (he lost a point for that in the eleventh round) and his lack of order, created difficulties since the beginning for Light, who took several clear right hands. With some cunning the challenger landed a straight right or a left hook, but generally missed most of his hands trying to deal with Okolie’s jab (or an illegally stretched arm in his face) with back step. Adding to this some opportunistic right hands or hooks between clinches (or a blow to the back of the head), Okolie took the lead and increased the difference round by round.
With everything against him, Light resorted to his will, and with persistence he managed to shorten the spaces and take advantage of the fact that the champion entangled himself to land some clear right hooks. However, these successes did not have the necessary solidity to threaten Okolie, who once again, as in almost all of his career, bored the public, received boos and won unconvincingly, even though he hurt Light in the tenth and eleventh rounds.
Some rumors affirm that the plan is for Okolie to next face Richard Riakporhe, now a squadmate with whom he has had a rivalry for years. Anyway, regardless of whether he will face this boxer or another, the thing is that at this point many fans will try to avoid at all cost watching one more Okolie fight, as he is one of the worst current world champions.
