Teniendo en cuenta que en las cuotas de apuestas no habrá ni un solo combate sin un muy claro favorito, y que todos los grandes protagonistas del respaldo participarán en duelos en los que sus victorias son tan probables o más que la de Joshua en el choque estelar ante Franklin, la velada de Matchroom Boxing del próximo sábado no será para tirar cohetes. Aun así, a diferencia de lo sucedido en las últimas carteleras de esta promotora, se producirán un par de choques con algún tipo de interés, aunque sea remotamente.
Wardley busca mantener el impulso
Después de haber aplastado a todos sus contrincantes desde una victoria a los puntos en su debut, y viniendo de apabullar en tres rounds a Nathan Gorman en un campeonato británico, Fabio Wardley 15(14KO)-0 está viviendo un gran momento y muchos le ven ya como una nueva estrella en ascenso en el peso pesado británico. Parece que Eddie Hearn así lo cree también, habiendo situado a Wardley respaldando a Anthony Joshua, quien ha sido y es todavía el gran buque insignia de la compañía en la división.
Como el promotor sabe que Wardley, pese a estar todavía en desarrollo, tiene potencial deportivo y económico, ha hecho lo que se suele hacer con este tipo de boxeadores en esta era: situarlo ante un rival ante el que se espera que pueda lograr un contundente triunfo que siga agrandando su prestigio.
En este caso, Wardley se medirá al estadounidense Michael Polite Coffie 13(10KO)-3(2), que vivió un éxito tan repentino como pasajero. Y es que saltó a la fama noqueando en una velada de PBC al prospecto Darmani Rock (2021), pero perdió sus dos siguientes combates contra la piedra de toque Jonathan Rice y en su último duelo fue controlado y vencido antes del límite por el prometedor, pero con muy poca experiencia profesional, Gurgen Hovhannisyan.
Así, se tiene la sensación de que Coffie ha perdido el rumbo, quizás para nunca recuperarlo, y de que un Wardley muy motivado, más joven (ocho años) con gran poder destructivo y que tiene mejor resistencia que él debería poder vencerle, escalar algún puesto en el ranking WBA y apuntar a un reto más significativo en la segunda mitad del año.
Nota: Este artículo ha sido elaborado antes de que hoy surgiese la información de que Felix Cash se ha retirado de su combate contra Signani por supuesta enfermedad. La pelea será sustituida por un desniveladísimo choque entre el oro olímpico Galal Yafai y el venido a menos Moisés Calleros. Si no deseas leer la parte de Cash salta directamente al párrafo de Austin Williams.
Cash y Williams se preparan para enfrentarse
Cuando hace dos años Felix Cash 16(10KO)-0 afrontó como visitante un difícil reto ante Denzel Bentley y se deshizo de él en sólo tres asaltos, parecía que su techo estaba muy alto, especialmente en una división del peso medio que actualmente pasa por una crisis respecto a la calidad de sus contendientes. Sin embargo, su carrera desde entonces ha ido de mal en peor: dos inactividades de diez meses, lesiones, dos knockdowns padecidos ante Magomed Madiev, mayores dificultades de las esperadas ante Celso Neves y un criticado aplazamiento de su combate ante Austin Williams, al que empujó absurdamente en un cara a cara.
Por ello, el futuro de Cash no se considera ya tan brillante como antes, sobre todo valorándose que, después de que se le acusase de huir de la pelea ante Williams, en teoría está obligado a enfrentarse a él igualmente en la segunda mitad del año, incluso aunque su rendimiento y su estado anímico no parecen óptimos.
Para intentar mejorar sus perspectivas e intentar hacer una declaración de intenciones, Cash buscará coronarse campeón de Europa del peso medio ante el italiano Matteo Signani, lo que realmente no enviaría un mensaje demasiado duro a su competencia potencial. Es decir, aunque Signani es uno de esos veteranos que extrañamente han experimentado tardíos aumentos de pegada, el hecho es que es un boxeador con gran lentitud de piernas, serios problemas de gestión táctica, 14 años mayor que Cash y que no ha lucido para nada ante rivales del nivel de Gevorg Khatchikian, Rubén Díaz y Anderson Prestot. Por ello, teóricamente Cash debería tener recursos, habilidad y capacidad ofensiva de sobra para derrotarle, aunque las dudas que ha generado respecto a su encaje y dedicación recientemente hacen que algunos le den a Signani la opción del pegador.
Respecto al arriba citado estadounidense Austin “Ammo” Williams 13(9KO)-0, éste también participará en la velada, en concreto ante el británico River Wilson-Bent 14(6KO)-2(1)-1, si bien su posición es diferente a la de Cash. Por ahora ha dominado ampliamente casi todos sus encuentros, dando muestras de astucia, eficacia, destreza y precisión incluso en sus mayores retos ante Chordale Booker y Kieron Conway. De ese modo, y enfrentándose a un Wilson-Bent que perdió por decisión ante Tyler Denny y que fue derrotado en dos asaltos por Hamzah Sheeraz, no se espera otra cosa que la victoria de Williams. Con todo, en su mano estará intentar ser todo lo contundente que pueda para que su promotor no trate de conspirar contra él con extrañas cartulinas buscando nivelar un tanto su competencia con Cash.
En principio, la cartelera principal contará también con la participación del peso ligero Campbell Hatton 10(3KO)-0, que se enfrentará a un rival un año inactivo, con nula pegada (y poco encaje) y que nunca ha vencido a un rival con récord positivo como su compatriota Louis Fielding 10(1KO)-7(4).
DAZN ofrecerá estos encuentros y el Joshua-Franklin el sábado desde las 20:00 en hora española, las 19:00 en Reino Unido y las 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.

Taking into account that in the betting odds there will not be a single fight without a very clear favorite, and that all the main protagonists of the undercard will participate in bouts in which their victories are as likely or more than that of Joshua in the main event against Franklin, next Saturday’s Matchroom Boxing evening will not be exactly special. Even so, unlike what happened in the most recents cards of this company, there will be a couple of remotly interesting clashes.
Wardley looks to keep up the momentum
Having crushed all his opponents since a points win in his debut, and coming off a three-round win over Nathan Gorman in a British championship, Fabio Wardley 15(14KO)-0 is in a great moment and many see him already as a new rising star in British heavyweight. It seems that Eddie Hearn thinks so too, having put Wardley supporting Anthony Joshua, who has been and still is the company’s flagship in the division.
Since the promoter knows that Wardley, despite still being in development, has boxing and economic potential, he has done what is usually done with this type of boxer in this era: make him face an opponent against whom he is expected to achieve a stoppage win to continue improving his rating.
In this case, Wardley will face American Michael Polite Coffie 13(10KO)-3(2), who had a sudden and fleeting success. In 2021 he became known by knocking out prospect Darmani Rock in a PBC evening, but he lost his next two fights against the stepping stone Jonathan Rice and in his last bout he was dominated and stopped by promising, but inexperienced, Gurgen Hovhannisyan.
Thus, fans feel that Coffie has lost his way, perhaps never to get it back, and that a highly motivated, younger (8 years) boxer as Wardley, who has great destructive power and better stamina than him, should be able to win, climb some position in the WBA ranking and aim for a more significant challenge in the second half of the year.

Cash and Williams prepare to face each other
When Felix Cash 16(10KO)-0 took on a hard fight as a visitor against Denzel Bentley two years ago and knocked him out in just three rounds, it seemed like his ceiling was very high, especially in a middleweight division currently going through a crisis regarding the quality of its contenders. However, since then his career has gone from bad to worse: two ten-month layoffs, injuries, two knockdowns suffered against Magomed Madiev, greater difficulties than expected against Celso Neves and a criticized postponement of his fight against Austin Williams, whom absurdly pushed in a face to face.
For this reason, Cash’s future is no longer considered as bright as before, especially taking into account that, after being accused of ducking Williams, he is forced to face him in the second half of the year, even although his performance and his state of mind do not seem optimal.
To try and improve his prospects and try to make a statement, Cash will seek to be crowned European middleweight champion battling Italian Matteo Signani, which really wouldn’t send much of a message to his potential competition. That is to say, although Signani is one of those veterans who has strangely experienced late increases in punching power, the fact is that he is a boxer with very slow legs, serious tactical management issues, 14 years older than Cash and who has not shone at all against opponents like Gevorg Khatchikian, Rubén Díaz and Anderson Prestot. Therefore, theoretically Cash should have enough technical resources, skill and offensive capacity to defeat him, although the doubts that he has raised recently regarding his chin and dedication make some giving Signani a puncher’s chance.
As for the aforementioned American Austin «Ammo» Williams 13(9KO)-0, he will also participate in the evening, specifically clashing against British River Wilson-Bent 14(6KO)-2(1)-1, although his position is very different from Cash’s. For now, Williams has dominated almost all of his matches, showing cunning, efficiency, skill and precision even in his biggest challenges against Chordale Booker and Kieron Conway. In this way, and facing a boxer as Wilson-Bent, who lost by decision against Tyler Denny and who was defeated in two rounds by Hamzah Sheeraz, it is hard to expect anything other than a victory for Williams. However, it will be up to him to try to be as forceful as possible to prevent his promoter from conspiring against him with strange cards looking to level his competition with Cash somewhat.
In theory, the main card will also feature lightweight Campbell Hatton 10(3KO)-0, who will face an opponent who has been inactive for a year, with a complete lack of power (and poor chin) and who has never beaten a boxer with positive record in his compatriot Louis Fielding 10(1KO)-7(4).
