Confirmado mundial WBO del peso crucero Lawrence Okolie vs. Chris Billam-Smith. Declaraciones

Después de su pobre espectáculo ante David Light el 25 de marzo, muchos habrían preferido descansar más antes de volver a ver sobre el ring al campeón mundial WBO del peso crucero Lawrence Okolie, que es el monarca reinante con una mayor cantidad de insoportablemente aburridas y deslucidas victorias en su carrera, básicamente por sus constantes clinches. No obstante, Okolie ya tiene fecha para su retorno al ring, que se producirá el día 27 de mayo en el Vitality Stadium de Bournemouth, Reino Unido.
Su contrincante será el ídolo local Chris Billam-Smith, boxeador en racha de ocho victorias (desde una controvertida derrota ante Riakporhe) y clasificado en el top 3 de tres organismos que está teniendo un buen rendimiento y que parece un serio reto para Okolie, especialmente siendo un boxeador con fuerza y que sabe manejarse en los agarres. Por lo tanto, si bien Okolie merece todas las críticas que recibe y más por su deslucidísimo boxeo, es justo decir que al menos en esta defensa voluntaria encarará una difícil pelea como visitante que perfectamente podría haber rehuido, al menos por ahora.
Del respaldo por el momento se conoce un único combate más, el campeonato británico, también del peso crucero, que disputarán Mikael Lawal e Isaac Chamberlain, si bien en las próximas semanas se incluirán en la cartelera también varios de los numerosos prospectos de la compañía BOXXER, organizadora de este evento.
En el anuncio oficial, el campeón Okolie señaló lo siguiente:
“Estoy motivado, estoy listo. Vengo justo de una defensa exitosa en la que gané los doce asaltos contra un desconocido pero duro competidor, un campeón nacional en su tierra. Ahora, unas semanas después, voy a por un conocido duro peleador, un boxeador ranqueado en el top 10, excampeón de Europa y actualmente campeón de la Commonwealth como Chris Billam-Smith. No muchos boxeadores hacen defensas sucesivas en un periodo de tiempo tan corto. No muchos escogen las peleas más duras disponibles para ellos, pero así soy yo. Chris, te quiero, pero tengo que anotarme el KO en este combate”.
El retador Chris Billam-Smith, que ha sido compañero de entrenamiento de Okolie, afirmó:
“Pelear contra alguien que conozco muy bien por un título mundial es una oportunidad muy emocionante. Estoy eufórico por pelear en la casa de mi querido AFC Bournemouth frente a mis fenomenales fans. El 27 de mayo les compensaré ganando un título mundial”.
Por su parte, el promotor Ben Shalom señaló:
“Para Chris Billam-Smith este es un sueño hecho realidad. Pelear por el título mundial en su casa, en el estadio de su equipo de fútbol, frente a un lleno total apoyándole… es de lo que los sueños están hechos. Pero Lawrence Okolie es un campeón luchador. No dudó en aceptar el combate en Bournemouth. Es frío como el hielo. Está invicto. Y ciertamente no le molesta que el público esté en su contra. De hecho, incluso hace el que asunto sea mejor para él. Con una cartelera repleta, este será el evento que dará inicio a un increíble verano para el boxeo británico”.

After his poor show against David Light on March 25, many would have preferred to rest more before seeing WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie back in the ring, as he is the reigning titlist with the more unbearably boring and lackluster wins in his career, basically due to his constant clinching. However, Okolie already has a date for his return, which will take place on May 27 at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth, United Kingdom.
His opponent will be local hero Chris Billam-Smith, a boxer on an eight-fight win streak (since a controversial loss to Riakporhe), and ranked in the top 3 of three organizations, who is performing well and seems like a serious challenge for Okolie. Especially considering that Billam-Smith is a strong boxer who knows how to handle clinches. So while Okolie deserves all the criticism he gets, and even more, for his boxing, it’s fair to say that at least in this voluntary defense he’ll face a tough fight as a visitor that he could have easily avoided, at least for now.
At the moment, only one undercard fight is confirmed, this being the British cruiserweight championship between Mikael Lawal and Isaac Chamberlain, although in the coming weeks several of the numerous prospects from the BOXXER squad will also be included in the event.
In the official announcement, the champion Okolie said:
«I’m pumped, I’m ready to go. I’ve just come off a successful defence where I won all 12 rounds against an unknown but tough competitor, a national champion in his homeland. Now weeks later I am going in against a known tough boxer, a top 10 ranked boxer, former European champion and current Commonwealth champion Chris Billam-Smith. Not many fighters make back to back defences in such a short space of time. Not many pick the hardest fights available to them, but that’s what I’m about. Chris, I love you, but I have to get the KO in this one.»
Challenger Chris Billam-Smith, who has been Okolie’s sparring partner, stated:
«Fighting someone I know very well for a world title is a very exciting opportunity. I’m elated to be fighting at the home of my beloved AFC Bournemouth in front of my phenomenal fans. On May 27 I will repay them by winning a world title»
For his part, promoter Ben Shalom said:
«For Chris Billam-Smith this is a dream come true. To fight for the world title in his hometown, in his football team’s stadium, in front of a sold-out crowd cheering him on…it’s the stuff dreams are made of. But Lawrence Okolie is a fighting champion. He had no hesitation in taking the fight in Bournemouth. He’s ice cold. He is undefeated. And he’s certainly not bothered about the crowd being against him. In fact that just sweetens the deal for him. With a stacked card, this will be the event to kick-off an incredible summer for British boxing.»
