Previa: Mundiales “Bam” Rodríguez vs. González y Akhmadaliev vs. Tapales en evento de Matchroom Boxing

Aunque es completamente cierto que el estadounidense Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez 17(11KO)-0 mostró un rendimiento realmente excelente en su etapa de prospecto y cumplió a la perfección en sus pasos adelante, los medios se equivocaron completamente al sobrevalorar mucho sus triunfos ante Carlos Cuadras y, especialmente, Wisaksil Wangek. Y es que ambos habían dejado su mejor momento años atrás, habían tenido que lidiar con varios problemas personales y sus actuaciones eran cada vez menos convincentes debido a un rendimiento decreciente.
Por ello, las victorias de Rodríguez ante Cuadras y Wangek deberían haber sido puestas en perspectiva y no llevar a ciertos expertos a preguntarse en qué lugar del top 10 libra por libra había que situar ya al invicto. Esta tipo de valoraciones totalmente erradas se llevaron un revés tremendo cuando en su siguiente combate el peso supermosca “Bam” tuvo que luchar duro para lograr un ajustado triunfo ante un púgil muy competente, pero no de élite, como Israel González.
Tras esta actuación que conllevó críticas para Rodríguez, su equipo decidió pisar el freno y hacerle descender al peso mosca buscando recuperar impulso, división en la que Matchroom Boxing le consiguió una pugna contra el mexicano Cristian “Chicharito” González 15(5KO)-1 por el cinturón mundial WBO dejado vacante por Junto Nakatani. De todos modos, aunque la posición de Rodríguez como aspirante puede ser comprensible e incluso justificable, resultó muy extraño que González fuese ranqueado como 2º cuando ni siquiera parece ser parte del top 10 global de aspirantes ni por rendimiento ni por méritos. Sobre todo llevando inactivo desde marzo de 2022.
Sea como sea, y dejando de lado que González logró sus dos mayores victorias de forma controvertida ante Saleto Henderson y por ajustada decisión ante un Saúl Juárez al que Rodríguez destruyó en dos asaltos, estilísticamente el encuentro parece favorecer totalmente a “Bam”. El visitante “Chicharito” tiene un estilo basado en el boxeo sin iniciativa en el que deja mucho margen para que sus rivales puedan armar ofensivas, precisamente lo más peligroso que se puede hacer ante un Rodríguez con gran frecuencia de golpeo, mucha fluidez en las combinaciones, pegada y variedad de trayectorias. Así, todo parece indicar que Rodríguez podrá coronarse en el peso mosca y dará forma a potenciales unificaciones con compañeros de escuadra como Sunny Edwards y Julio César Martínez.
Akhmadaliev espera al Fulton-Inoue
Las conversaciones respecto al peso supergallo ahora mismo se centran en el choque que sostendrán el 25 de julio el monarca WBC-WBO Stephen Fulton y Naoya Inoue, por lo que el titular WBA-IBF de la misma división, el uzbeko Murodjon “MJ” Akhmadaliev 11(8KO)-0, sólo puede esperar y ver si una victoria del japonés facilita pactar una pelea por la corona indiscutida que no logró acordar con el estadounidense. En cualquier caso, sin poder alcanzar la máxima pelea en la división de momento, “MJ” encarará el sábado una defensa obligatoria ante el excampeón mundial filipino Marlon “Nightmare” Tapales 36(19KO)-3(2) en el semifondo del evento en el Boeing Center at Tech Port de San Antonio, Estados Unidos.
Tapales no es para nada un rival fácil, ya que es un buen contragolpeador, fuerte, con destreza, que desde 2014 ha logrado todas sus victorias antes del límite y que se ganó esta oportunidad titular mostrándose apabullantemente superior al pegador Teshigawara en una eliminatoria final.
Aun así, Tapales perdió por KOT en el undécimo round en 2019 ante un Ryosuke Iwasa que posteriormente fue batido en cinco asaltos por el propio Akhmadaliev. Asimismo, si bien Tapales es versátil, un boxeador que le presione y dé continuidad a sus ataques puede ponerlo en dificultades tácticas, por lo que un Akhmadaliev con gran equilibrio potencia-técnica, que es capaz de acortar los espacios con soltura y que es muy duro trabajando en media-corta, parece en posición de poder retener sus coronas.
Resto del respaldo
De las peleas que precederán a estos dos campeonatos mundiales, se pueden destacar tres, siendo una de ellas una eliminatoria semifinal WBA del peso pluma entre el invicto prospecto Raymond Ford 13(7KO)-0-1 y el exmonarca mundial Jessie Magdaleno 29(18KO)-1(1).
Evidentemente este será el mayor test de la carrera de Ford, ya que, después de un par de actuaciones flojas (Edward Vázquez y Aarón Pérez) que han hecho dudar a muchos sobre su potencial, afrontará un serio reto contra Magdaleno, que en su mejor versión puede ofrecer un boxeo dinámico bastante eficaz. No obstante, Ford parece estar mejorando, Magdaleno sólo ha peleado una vez en los últimos tres años y en su último encuentro ante un púgil atlético y explosivo (Dogboe, en 2018) fue batido por KOT, por lo que el invicto partirá lógicamente como favorito pese a las incógnitas que genera.
Respecto a los otros dos duelos, el peso superpluma estadounidense Thomas “Gunna Man” Mattice 20(15KO)-3-1 intentará explotar su triunfo contra pronóstico sobre el invicto Christian Tapia enfrentándose a otro imbatido como el joven mexicano Ramiro “Demon” Ceseña 16(13KO)-0-1, más conocido por truncar el récord sin derrotas del prospecto Bekman Soylybayev; y el uzbeko, número 1 del ranking WBA del peso superwélter, Israil “The Dream” Madrimov 8(6KO)-0-1 buscará mantenerse activo a la espera de acontecimientos enfrentándose al estadounidense Raphael “Trouble” Igbokwe 16(7KO)-3(1).

Although it is completely true that American Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez 17(11KO)-0 showed an excellent level in his prospect stage and fulfilled perfectly his mission in his steps up in competition, the media was completely wrong greatly overrating his wins over Carlos Cuadras and, especially, Wisaksil Wangek: both boxers had left their prime years ago, had dealt with various personal problems and their performances were less and less convincing.
Therefore, Rodríguez’s victories against Cuadras and Wangek should have been put into perspective, but certain pundits began to wonder where in the top 10 pound-for-pound ranking the undefeated fighter should be placed. This type of completely erroneous evaluations suffered a tremendous setback when in his next fight the super flyweight “Bam” had to fight hard to achieve a narrow win over a very competent, but not elite, boxer like Israel González.
After this criticized performance, Rodríguez’s team decided to step on the brakes and move him down to flyweight seeking to regain momentum. In that division Matchroom Boxing got him a fight against the Mexican Cristian «Chicharito» González 15(5KO)-1 for the WBO world belt vacated by Junto Nakatani. Although Rodríguez’s position as a challenger may be understandable and even justifiable, it was very strange that González was ranked as number 2 when he is not even considered one of the 10 best contenders, neither by performance nor by merit. In addition, he has been inactive since March 2022.
Be that as it may, and leaving aside the fact that González achieved his two biggest victories in a controversial way against Saleto Henderson and by close decision against Saúl Juárez (whom Rodríguez destroyed in two rounds), stylistically the match seems to completely favor “Bam”. The visitor «Chicharito» has a style based on boxing without initiative in which he leaves a lot of room for his opponents to throw offensives, precisely the most dangerous thing to do against a boxer like Rodríguez, with a high work rate, a lot of fluidity in his combinations, power and variety of punching angles. Thus, everything seems to indicate that Rodríguez will be able to become flyweight champion and will start to build the foundation for potential unifications with his squadmates Sunny Edwards and Julio César Martínez.
Akhmadaliev awaits Fulton-Inoue winner
Conversations regarding the super bantamweight division right now are focused on the clash between WBC-WBO champion Stephen Fulton and Naoya Inoue on July 25. So the WBA-IBF titleholder of the same division, the Uzbek Murodjon “MJ” Akhmadaliev 11(8KO)-0, can only wait and hope for the Japanese to win to try to agree with him a fight for the undisputed crown that he failed to agree with the American boxer. In any case, since he is unable to reach the biggest fight in the division at the moment, on Saturday “MJ” will face a mandatory defense against Filipino former world champion Marlon “Nightmare” Tapales 36(19KO)-3(2) in the co-main event of the evening in the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio, United States.
Tapales is not an easy opponent at all, since he is a good counterpuncher, strong, skillful, who has achieved all his victories by stoppage since 2014 and who earned this title shot by being overwhelmingly superior to the puncher Teshigawara in a final eliminator.
Even so, in 2019, Tapales lost by TKO in the eleventh round against Ryosuke Iwasa, who was later beaten in five rounds by Akhmadaliev. Also, although Tapales is versatile, a fighter who puts pressure on him and gives continuity to his attacks can put him in tactical difficulties. So a boxer as Akhmadaliev with a great power-technique balance, who is capable of shortening the distance with ease and who works very hard at short range, seems in a position to retain his crowns.
Rest of the main support
Of the fights that will precede these two world championships, three stand out, one of them being a WBA featherweight semifinal eliminator between undefeated prospect Raymond Ford 13(7KO)-0-1 and former world champion Jessie Magdaleno 29(18KO)-1(1).
Obviously this will be the biggest test of Ford’s career since, after a couple of weak performances (Edward Vázquez and Aarón Pérez) that have made many doubt his potential, he will face a serious challenge against Magdaleno who, in his best night, can deploy a quite effective mobile boxing. However, Ford seems to be improving, Magdaleno has only fought once in the last three years and in his last clash against an athletic and explosive fighter (Dogboe, in 2018) was beaten by TKO, so the undefeated will logically be the favorite despite the questions he generates.
Regarding the other two bouts, American super featherweight Thomas “Gunna Man” Mattice 20(15KO)-3-1 will try to exploit his upset victory over undefeated Christian Tapia facing another unbeaten fighter as the young Mexican Ramiro “Demon” Ceseña 16(13KO)-0-1, best known for being the first to beat the prospect Bekman Soylybayev; and Uzbek, ranked as number 1 super welterweight in the WBA list, Israil “The Dream” Madrimov 8(6KO)-0-1 will stay busy, waiting for a big opportunity, battling American Raphael “Trouble” Igbokwe 16(7KO)-3(1).
