Previa: Los gigantes plata olímpicos Joe Joyce y Zhilei Zhang se enfrentan en guerra del peso pesado

El peso pesado británico Joe “Juggernaut” Joyce 15(14KO)-0 afirma que no puede entender cómo es posible que un Daniel Dubois al que derrotó por KOT en 2020 (y que desde entonces ha logrado triunfos mucho menos meritorios que Joyce) vaya a acceder al campeonato mundial antes que él. Y es que la WBA ordenó que el campeón unificado Oleksandr Usyk se enfrentase a continuación a Daniel Dubois, con el que lleva días negociando un combate que podría llevarse a cabo hacia mediados de año.
Ciertamente, nadie puede entender una situación así, ya que simplemente carece de lógica, más aún cuando, con las normas en la mano, parecía que el aspirante obligatorio WBO debería ser el siguiente en acceder al mundial y no el WBA. En cualquier caso, a Joyce no le queda otra que esperar, algo que no hará permaneciendo de brazos cruzados, midiéndose a un peso crucero sin encaje o a un peso pesado que ha dejado atrás su mejor momento hace una década. Al contrario, a diferencia de muchos otros boxeadores que merecen duras críticas por su tendencia a evitar retos, Joyce se medirá a un peligroso contendiente como el chino Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-1-1.
Algunos podían tener dudas respecto al nivel de Zhang, ya que sus demoledores triunfos habían llegado por lo general ante rivales sencillos y sólo pudo sacar un empate contra Jerry Forrest. Sin embargo, cuando llegó la hora de afrontar una prueba de fuego, “Big Bang” estuvo más que a la altura. El pasado agosto, en el respaldo del Usyk-Joshua II, Zhang ofreció una tremenda actuación ante el temido prospecto Filip Hrgović, eliminatoria IBF en la que el chino perdió por mínima diferencia (para muchos cuestionablemente) y tras dejar tocado varias veces al favorito. Por ello, Joyce sin duda buscará hacer toda una declaración de intenciones midiéndose a este oponente en un duelo de gigantes.
Hay que tener en cuenta que el sábado, en el Copper Box Arena de Londres, Reino Unido, se enfrentarán dos plata olímpicos, con 1,98 m de altura (6’6”), con más de 120 kg en la báscula y que cuentan con una enorme fuerza y contundencia, además de con agresividad. Así, se espera que sea un choque lleno de acción, perspectiva que los boxeadores respaldaron con sus declaraciones.
La cuestión con Joe Joyce es que se para demasiados golpes con la cara y confía demasiado en su férreo encaje, pareciendo que algún día podría toparse con un golpe de poder que simplemente no podrá resistir. Por ello, un zurdo astuto como Zhang, que ha pesado más que él en varios combates y que ha dado sobradas muestras de su pegada, se presenta como un reto interesante, puesto que si Joyce se abalanza sobre él y se descuida en defensa podría recibir brutales izquierdazos que resultarían muchísimo más amenazantes que los nítidos puños que impactó contra él Joseph Parker.
En este sentido, también valdrá la pena prestar atención a la táctica de Joyce y ver si éste intentará apabullar con su ritmo a un boxeador tan grande como él o si por el contrario buscará boxear con más espacios como hizo ante el citado Dubois. Si como afirmó que haría, Joyce vuelve a lanzarse a la carga, deberían producirse muy buenos intercambios, en los cuales, como siempre, resultarían clave la resistencia al castigo y al cansancio del invicto. Y es que si Joyce logra soportar los mazazos de Zhang, que tiende a cansarse mucho, seguramente conseguirá empujar hacia aguas profundas al visitante (especialmente si trabaja bien en corta) y a medio-largo plazo lo pondrá en serios apuros.
Respaldo del evento
En el respaldo principal de esta cartelera sobresalen tres combates. Uno de ellos, en principio el choque de semifondo, será una pelea femenina en la que participará la excampeona mundial unificada del peso superpluma Mikaela Mayer 17(5KO)-1, que tras su ajustada (para muchos controvertida) derrota ante Alycia Baumgardner intentará acercarse a un mundial en el peso ligero ante Katie Taylor peleando contra la griega, exmonarca del peso superligero, Christina Linardatou 14(6KO)-2.
“Medusa” Linardatou sólo ha sufrido derrotas ante Katie Taylor (a la cual ofreció una dura pugna) y Delfine Persoon, y además posee una victoria sobre la propia Baumgardner, de modo que, pese a que no ha afrontado una pelea de calibre desde que fue madre (y estuvo parada dos años y medio), debería ser un buen primer test en el peso ligero para Mayer.
Los otros dos encuentros destacados serán un campeonato británico del peso medio en el que el titular, y exretador mundial, Denzel Bentley 17(14KO)-2(1)-1, tras su muy meritoria actuación ante el monarca Janibek Alimkhanuly, buscará regresar a la senda del triunfo defendiendo su cinturón ante Kieran Smith 18(7KO)-1(1), que en su mayor pugna fue batido por KOT por Troy Williamson, y un choque del peso ligero en el que el prospecto Sam Noakes 10(10KO)-0 tratará de lograr su primer triunfo de 2023 y mantener su 100% de knockouts ante el indio, sin poner a prueba, Karthik Sathish Kumar 10(4KO)-0.

British heavyweight Joe “Juggernaut” Joyce 15(14KO)-0 says he can’t understand how Daniel Dubois, whom he defeated by TKO in 2020 (and who has scored less meritorious wins than Joyce ever since) is going to reach a world title fight before him. The WBA ordered unified champion Oleksandr Usyk to next face Daniel Dubois, with whom he has been negotiating for days a fight that could take place around mid-year.
Certainly, no one can understand such a situation, since it simply lacks logic, even more so when, according to the rules, it seemed that the WBO mandatory challenger should be next. In any case, Joyce has no choice but to wait, something he won’t do by sitting idly by, taking on a cruiserweight with glass chin or battling a heavyweight who left behind his prime a decade ago. On the contrary, unlike many other boxers who deserve criticism for their tendency to avoid risks, Joyce will face a dangerous contender in the Chinese Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-1-1.
Some had doubts about Zhang’s level, as his knockout wins were usually against very easy opponents and he was only able to fight to a draw against Jerry Forrest. However, when he faced a decisive test, “Big Bang” lived up to it. Last August, in the Usyk-Joshua II card, Zhang put on a tremendous performance against the feared prospect Filip Hrgović. In this IBF eliminator the Chinese lost by a narrow difference (the verdict was questioned by many) and after hurting the favorite several times. Therefore, Joyce will undoubtedly seek to make a statement by taking on this opponent in a duel of giants.
It should be taken into account that on Saturday, at the Copper Box Arena in London, United Kingdom, will step into the ring two Olympic silver medalists, 1.98 m tall (6’6”), with more than 118 kg (260 lb) on the scale and who have enormous strength and forcefulness, as well as remarkable aggressiveness. Thus, it is expected a fight full of action, perspective that the two boxers supported in their statements.
The thing with Joe Joyce is that he blocks too many punches with his face and relies too much on his iron chin, and it seems that one day he might run into a power shot that he simply won’t be able to resist. Therefore, a cunning southpaw like Zhang, who has outweighed him in several fights and who has shown a great punching power, looks like an interesting challenge: if Joyce pressures him intensely and is careless in defense he could receive brutal left hands that would be far more threatening than the clean power shots that Joseph Parker landed against him.
In this sense, it will also be worth paying attention to Joyce’s tactics and see if he will try to overwhelm a boxer as big as him with his high pace or if, on the contrary, he will seek to box with more spaces as he did against the aforementioned Dubois. If, as he claimed he would do, Joyce charges again, there should be very good exchanges, in which, as always, the undefeated’s resistance to punishment and stamina would be key. If Joyce manages to withstand the blows of Zhang, who tends to get very tired, he will surely be able to push the visitor into deep waters (especially if he works well at short range) and in the medium-long term will put him in serious trouble.
Undercard
In the main support of this bill three fights stand out. One of them, in theory the co-feature bout, will be a women’s fight in which former unified super featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer 17(5KO)-1 will participate. After her close (for many controversial) defeat against Alycia Baumgardner she will try to get closer to a world title bout at lightweight against Katie Taylor fighting the Greek former super lightweight champion Christina Linardatou 14(6KO)-2.
“Medusa” Linardatou has only suffered defeats against Katie Taylor (to whom she offered a tough fight) and Delfine Persoon, and also has a victory over Baumgardner in her record. So, despite the fact that she has not faced a high-level fight since she had a baby (and was inactive for two and a half years), she should be a good first test at lightweight for Mayer.
The other two mentionable matches will be a British middleweight championship in which the belt holder, and former world challenger, Denzel Bentley 17(14KO)-2(1)-1, after his very meritorious performance against the champion Janibek Alimkhanuly, will seek to return to the winning ways defending his belt against Kieran Smith 18(7KO)-1(1), who in his biggest fight to date was stopped by Troy Williamson, and a lightweight clash in which prospect Sam Noakes 10(10KO)-0 will try to score his first win of 2023 and maintain his 100% knockout ratio against the untested Indian Karthik Sathish Kumar 10(4KO)-0.
