Ninguno de los tres combates que respaldarán al Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan García en la cartelera principal está ni siquiera remotamente cerca del choque estelar en cuanto a interés o nivel. Tanto es así que todos los no favoritos están a una distancia superior a los siete euros por euro apostado. Por ello, realmente PBC y Golden Boy se lo han puesto difícil a los aficionados de Estados Unidos para que se decidan a pagar los 85 dólares de PPV, algo que sólo harán dependiendo del entusiasmo que tengan por la pugna estelar. Aun así, como la pelea cabeza de cartel es una de las citas más importantes del año y habrá que pasar por el respaldo antes de llegar al Tank-García, valdrá la pena analizar qué se puede esperar de las pugnas de acompañamiento.
Cambio de rival para Morrell
En el choque coestelar, en teoría, el cubano David Morrell 8(7KO)-0, uno de los contendientes más interesantes y prometedores del peso supermedio actual, iba a enfrentarse al ghanés Sena Agbeko, pero la Comisión Atlética del Estado de Nevada no le dio licencia a este último. Por ello, finalmente, a poco más de una semana para la pelea, entró como sustituto de Agbeko el bronce olímpico brasileño Yamaguchi Falcao 24(10KO)-1-1. Este boxeador técnicamente puede ser algo más exigente que Agbeko, aunque no será una amenaza desde el punto de vista físico.
Esta es la clave del asunto, puesto que Morrell es un boxeador con un equilibrio físico-técnico extraordinario, siendo un peso supermedio grande, atlético, con pegada y velocidad que además es zurdo, tiene mucha variedad de recursos tácticos y notable precisión.
Así, enfrentándose a un Falcao que logró su medalla olímpica con varios controvertidos resultados, que como profesional no pudo ganar en sus mayores tests ante D’Mitrus Ballard (que fue arrollado por Munguía) y Christopher Pearson (que fue noqueado por DeLoach y Carlos Góngora), que no tiene un estado de forma óptimo, que no pudo noquear a Alex Therán (éste ha sido noqueado en sus otras 10 derrotas), que ha logrado muchas de sus victorias ante rivales de nivel bajísimo y que es diez años mayor, Morrell debería poder lograr un triunfo contundente.
De hecho, más allá de ver cómo se maneja con un zurdo y de añadir un nombre conocido a su récord, el mayor interés del choque para Morrell será aprovechar la atención que recibirá esta velada para intentar dar nuevas muestras de su tremenda capacidad ofensiva, impresionar a los fans y así tratar de acercarse a su objetivo de alcanzar una pugna ante David Benavídez.
“Bully” busca desquitarse
En 2021, el plata olímpico uzbeko Bektemir “Bully” Melikuziev 11(9KO)-1(1) sufrió una de las mayores sorpresas del año al ser noqueado en el tercer round por el estadounidense Gabriel “King” Rosado 26(15KO)-16(4)-1, que en los nueve años anteriores había dado forma a un récord 4-8-1. Esto supuso un cambio drástico a corto plazo para ambos, ya que Melikuziev se vio alejado de sus planes mundialistas (y también de peleas ante rivales de nivel alto), mientras que Rosado accedió a una buena bolsa ante Jaime Munguía. Teniendo en cuenta el precedente, muchos se sienten atraídos por esta revancha, pero lo cierto es que es enormemente difícil que “King” vuelva a repetir tal éxito.
Es verdad que Melikuziev no ha aprendido de sus errores, y sigue presionando como un abusón, confiando en su fuerza y potencia, portando las manos bajas y abriéndose mientras ataca a sus oponentes contra las cuerdas. Sin embargo, y aunque en sus últimas subidas al ring el uzbeko ha logrado triunfos ante rivales de nivel bajo, el hecho es que Rosado debería haberse retirado ya, habiendo sufrido una cantidad de castigo descomunal en su carrera y llegando además de tres derrotas consecutivas (Munguía, Mosley Jr. y Akhmedov) en las que se llevó 32 rounds de golpes y no pudo ser competitivo.
De ese modo, y si sumamos a ello que Melikuziev había derribado y estaba desgastando rápidamente a Rosado en el primer combate antes de la mano crucial que este último encontró, es de esperar que el boxeador más joven, motivado, fuerte, potente y fresco pueda lograr una victoria que le permita pasar página.
Elijah García mantiene el impulso
Un mes y medio después de noquear a Amilcar Vidal en un decisivo combate de invictos, el peso medio estadounidense Elijah García 14(12KO)-0 regresará al ring para participar en un evento en PPV, lo que demuestra que PBC quiere ayudar al prospecto de 19 años a desarrollarse, mantener el impulso y seguir ganando fans. En esta ocasión García se enfrentará al mexicano Kevin Salgado 15(10KO)-1-1, que parece prácticamente una víctima propiciatoria. Y es que en su debut en Estados Unidos, Salgado fue claramente superado por Bryant Perrella (dando los jueces un corrupto empate) y en su siguiente combate fue ampliamente derrotado por Joey Spencer (el mismo Spencer al que “Mono” Ramos batió por KOT posteriormente), siendo ambas peleas en el peso superwélter.
Por ello, aunque García tiene brechas técnicas y asume muchos riesgos, es de suponer que éste podrá vencer a un boxeador menos contundente que él, que asciende de división, que llega en un momento moral muy diferente y, lo que es más importante, que parece tener una importante desventaja en tenacidad y garra. Es decir, si Salgado no experimenta un cambio radical respecto a lo que ha ofrecido hasta ahora y tiene la mejor actuación de su carrera, podría pasarlo bastante mal y dependería esencialmente de su encaje.
La cartelera principal del evento Davis-García será emitida en Estados Unidos por un PPV que se iniciará el sábado a las 20:00 ET/17:00 PT, las 2:00 de la madrugada en hora española.

None of the three bouts that will compose the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia main support is even remotely close to the main event in terms of interest or level. So much so that all the underdogs are beyond 5/1. For this reason, PBC and Golden Boy have really made it difficult for fans in the United States to want to pay the 85 dollars of the PPV, something that they will only do depending on the enthusiasm they have for the main fight. Even so, as the headliner is one of the most anticipated of the year and it will be necessary to go through the undercard before arriving at the Tank-García bout, it will be worth analyzing what can be expected from the main support.
Change of opponent for Morrell
Originally, in the co-main event, Cuban David Morrell 8(7KO)-0, one of the most interesting and promising super middleweight contenders, was going to face Ghanaian Sena Agbeko, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission did not license the latter. For this reason, finally, with just over a week to go before the fight, Brazilian Olympic bronze medalist Yamaguchi Falcao 24(10KO)-1-1 entered as a substitute for Agbeko. This boxer technically may be somewhat more demanding than Agbeko, although he will not be a threat from a physical point of view.
This is the key to the matter, since Morrell is a boxer with an extraordinary physical-technical balance: he is a big, athletic super-middleweight, with punch and speed who is also southpaw, has a wide variety of tactical resources and remarkable precision.
Thus, facing a boxer like Falcao, who achieved his Olympic medal with controversial results, who as a professional could not win in his biggest tests against D’Mitrus Ballard (who was overwhelmed by Munguía) and Christopher Pearson (who was knocked out by DeLoach and Carlos Góngora ), who is not in top shape, who could not knock out Alex Therán (he has been stopped in his other 10 losses), who has scored many of his victories against very low-level opponents and who is ten years older, Morrell should be able to obtain a resounding win.
In fact, beyond seeing how he performs against a southpaw and adding a known name to his record, Morrell’s greatest interest in the clash will be taking advantage of the attention this evening will receive to try to show again his tremendous offensive capacity, impress the fans and thus try to get closer to his goal of reaching a fight against David Benavídez.
“Bully” seeks revenge
In 2021, Uzbek Olympic silver medalist Bektemir “Bully” Melikuziev 11(9KO)-1(1) suffered one of the biggest upsets of the year when he was knocked out in the third round by American Gabriel “King” Rosado 26(15KO)-16(4)-1, whose record in the previous nine years was 4-8-1. This meant a drastic change in their careers in the short term, since Melikuziev had to postpone his world title fight plans (and projected bouts against high-level boxers), while Rosado obtained a good purse against Jaime Munguía. Taking the precedent into account, many are intrigued by this rematch, but the truth is that it is extremely improbable for «King» to repeat such success again.
It’s true that Melikuziev hasn’t learned from his mistakes, and continues pressuring like a bully, relying just on his strength and power, keeping his hands low and neglecting defense as he attacks his opponents on the ropes. However, and although in his last ring appearances the Uzbek has achieved victories against low-level opposition, the fact is that Rosado should have retired by now: he has suffered an enormous amount of punishment in his career and he is also coming from three consecutive defeats (Munguía, Mosley Jr. and Akhmedov) in which he took punches for 32 rounds and failed to be competitive.
Thus, and adding to this that Melikuziev had knocked down (and was rapidly wearing down) Rosado in the first bout before the crucial hand the latter found, it is to be assumed that the younger, more motivated, stronger, more powerful and fresher boxer will achieve a victory that will allow him to turn the page.
Elijah Garcia keeps momentum
A month and a half after knocking out Amilcar Vidal in a decisive clash of undefeated, American middleweight Elijah Garcia 14(12KO)-0 will return to the ring in a PPV event, something that proves that PBC wants to help the 19 years old prospect to develop, keep momentum and continue growing his fan base. This time Garcia will face Mexican Kevin Salgado 15(10KO)-1-1, who seems a tailor-made opponent. In his US debut, the super welterweight Salgado was clearly defeated by Bryant Perrella (despite the corrupt draw verdict) and in his next fight he was widely defeated by Joey Spencer (the same Spencer that «Mono» Ramos later beat by TKO).
For this reason, although García has technical flaws and takes many risks, it is to be expected that he will be able to beat a less forceful boxer than him, who is moving up a division, who is in a very different morale state and, what is most important, who seems to have a significant disadvantage in tenacity and grit. That is to say, if Salgado does not experience a radical change with respect to what he has offered in the ring up to now and has the best performance of his career, he could have a very difficult time and would essentially depend on his chin.
The main card of the Davis-García event will be broadcast in the United States by a PPV that will begin on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT, 1:00 in the United Kingdom.
