Si el mexicano Kevin Salgado 15(10KO)-2-1 quería evitar verse en una pelea muy comprometida, necesitaba dar forma a una enorme evolución y mejorar mucho su rendimiento en su ascenso al peso medio para enfrentarse al jovencísimo prospecto estadounidense Elijah García 15(12KO)-0. Sin duda, Salgado ofreció su mejor versión y la mejor actuación de toda su carrera, pero ni aun así esto le bastó para imponerse a García, que se hizo con un triunfo por decisión unánime con justas tarjetas de doble 97-92 y un demasiado ajustado 95-94.
Como en su anterior combate corrió demasiados riesgos y recibió bastantes golpes en poco tiempo pese a su victoria final, el zurdo García estuvo más comedido en el comienzo, manteniendo su guardia alta y dejando que Salgado lanzase buenas combinaciones gancho-zurdo directo y certeros hooks al torso. Sin embargo, su planteamiento menos agresivo de lo habitual sólo le estaba haciendo perder asaltos y recibir castigo, volviendo a sufrir, como en su anterior choque, una hemorragia nasal.
Con la pelea estando así, desde antes de la mitad García empezó a soltarse más al ataque, arrojando izquierdazos aislados, uno-dos y duras combinaciones directo-hook. Esto hizo que el mexicano insistiese en sus acciones ilegales, que fueron recurrentes durante toda la pugna, ya fuese con golpes bajos, cabezazos deliberados y puños entre agarres. Pero esto no le sirvió de mucho, ya que el invicto prospecto iba a más y estaba aprovechando cada vez mejor su contundencia a través de claros golpes de poder que amenazaron con desgastar a Salgado.
Efectivamente, pasada la mitad Salgado perdió agilidad y velocidad de piernas y empezó a intercambiar en corta, aunque dio facilidades para que García impactase duros puños curvos y perdió un punto por su enésimo golpe bajo en el séptimo asalto. Así, el visitante intentó ajustar en el tramo final volviendo a crear espacios, pero no tenía ya la fluidez y la chispa del primer tercio y en general García continuó escogiendo acertadamente sus manos para llegar con los golpes más precisos y mantener su control ante un Salgado con éxitos puntuales y menos significativos.
¿Qué se puede decir de un boxeador de sólo 19 años de edad? Pues evidentemente que necesita todavía mucha experiencia y mejora. No obstante, es justo señalar que púgiles más fogueados y con más edad que García no tienen su calmada solidez ni su garra ni su eficacia remando contra corriente, por lo que con cada pelea se afianza la impresión de que con el adecuado apoyo y desarrollo podría ser una figura importante en el peso medio en el futuro no tan lejano.

If Mexican Kevin Salgado 15(10KO)-2-1 wanted to avoid being in a very difficult fight, he needed to evolve and greatly improve his performance in his move up to middleweight to face the very young American prospect Elijah Garcia 15(12KO)-0. Without a doubt, Salgado offered his best version and the best performance of his entire career, but even so, this was not enough to prevail over García, who won by unanimous decision with fair scores of 97-92 and 97- 92 and a too close 95-94.
Since he took too many risks in his previous bout, and took too many shots despite his victory, this time the southpaw Garcia was more cautious in the beginning, keeping his guard up and letting Salgado throw good straight right-left hook combinations and accurate body shots. However, his less aggressive approach than usual was only making him lose rounds and receive punishment, and he suffered a nosebleed again, as in his previous clash.
In that situation, before the half point García began to attack more with lefts hands, one-twos and hard straight punch-hook combinations. This made the Mexican insist on his illegal actions, which were recurring throughout the bout, whether it was with low blows, deliberate headbutts or punches between holds. But this didn’t help him much, as the undefeated prospect was boxing better and better and was taking advantage of his forcefulness through clear power shots that threatened to wear down Salgado.
Indeed, in the second part Salgado lost agility and leg speed and began to exchange at short distance, although that way he made things easy for Garcia to connect hard hooks and the referee deducted him a point in the seventh round for his umpteenth low blow. Thus, in the final stretch the visitor tried to adjust by creating spaces again, but he no longer had the fluidity and activity of the first part, so in general García continued to pick his hands correctly to land the most precise shots and maintain his control over Salgado, who had less significant successes.
What can be said about a boxer only 19 years old? Well, obviously he still needs a lot of experience and improvement. However, it is fair to point out that more seasoned and older fighters than García do not have his calm solidity nor his grit when trailing on the scorecards, so with each fight he strengthens the impression that with the adequate support and development he could be an important name in the middleweight division in the not so distant future.
