El interés, o la falta del mismo, en las divisiones del boxeo es algo cíclico y natural. En otras palabras, por ejemplo el entusiasmo que muchos sienten ahora por la categoría del peso ligero, no existía a mediados de la década pasada. Por su parte, el peso medio vive justo el fenómeno contrario, pasando actualmente por un momento de muy escaso interés tanto por falta de actividad en la cumbre como por el bajo nivel medio de su top 15.
Esto en parte explica cómo es posible que un boxeador con tantas brechas y limitaciones como el canadiense Steven “Bang Bang” Butler 32(26KO)-3(3)-1 pueda alcanzar un campeonato mundial, lo que hará este sábado en el arena de Stockton, Estados Unidos, enfrentándose al monarca WBO, el kazajo Janibek “Qazaq Style” Alimkhanuly 13(8KO)-0. De todos modos, esta es una defensa voluntaria, y nadie obligaba a Top Rank a seleccionar como oponente de su púgil a Butler, que simplemente ha sido escogido para que Alimkhanuly pueda lograr una contundente victoria tras su actuación por debajo de las expectativas ante Denzel Bentley.
Efectivamente, aunque Alimkhanuly logró un claro triunfo y algunos analistas se excedieron alabando la actuación del británico, el kazajo no tuvo ni mucho menos su mejor actuación y tuvo una segunda mitad contendida y trabajada ante un Bentley que puso enorme tenacidad. Por ello, ante un boxeador con cuestionado encaje y permeable defensa como Butler, que ha sufrido todas sus derrotas antes del límite y que perdió en cinco rounds ante Ryota Murata y José de Jesús Macías, Alimkhanuly buscará anotarse un duro knockout que le permita recuperar impulso y algo de su perdida aura de gran amenaza en la división.
Es cierto que Butler tiene buena pegada y que si Alimkhanuly se descuidase tanto en la distancia media como ante Bentley podría pagar las consecuencias. Aun así, el zurdo “Qazaq Style” tiene una muy afilada izquierda recta, mucha precisión y buenas cualidades técnico-tácticas, por lo que, a poco que se aplique, es de esperar que pueda usar su control de la distancia y sus directos para causar estragos en Butler y en su simple boxeo y tratar de hacerlo sucumbir en la primera mitad.
Un nuevo campeón tras la era de Naoya Inoue
El combate de semifondo será otro mundial, en este caso por el vacante cinturón WBO del peso gallo. Así, tras la coronación de Takuma Inoue como titular WBA, el sábado se coronará a un segundo nuevo monarca tras el fin de la era de Naoya Inoue en la división. Los coaspirantes serán el australiano Jason Moloney 25(19KO)-2(1) y el filipino Vincent Astrolabio 18(13KO)-3(1), siendo favorito el primero.
Aunque muchos critican a los hermanos Moloney, el hecho es que son dos sólidos y capaces boxeadores con buena base técnica y un notable equilibrio técnica-potencia. En el caso de Jason Moloney, éste sólo ha sufrido derrotas ante Emmanuel Rodríguez por mínima diferencia (cuestionada por muchos), y contra el temible Naoya Inoue (es uno de los cuatro boxeadores que más rounds ha aguantado ante “Monster” en los últimos siete años). Además en varias de sus actuaciones ha evidenciado sus cualidades con mucha claridad, por ejemplo venciendo antes del límite al duro Leonardo Báez (que llegó a la última campana contra el espigado Rey Vargas), asestándole la derrota más rápida de su carrera a Aston Palicte o ganando como visitante al estadounidense Joshua Greer.
En las apuestas la diferencia con Astrolabio es muy estrecha, dado que el filipino está en el mejor momento de su carrera, a la que dio un vuelco derrotando contra todo pronóstico a Guillermo Rigondeaux y ganando una eliminatoria ante Nikolay Potapov. Sin embargo, Astrolabio ya no tiene el factor sorpresa de su lado, y esta vez no se enfrenta a un veterano con problemas de encaje y con limitaciones en el boxeo en corta, sino que peleará contra un adversario versátil, en óptimo estado de forma y con mejor técnica.
Por ello, si bien Astrolabio tiene posibilidades de éxito gracias a su tremenda explosividad y potencia, el hecho es que, si no consigue crear daños cruciales, en esta ocasión parece que sus descuidos defensivos, sus fallos tácticos y sus precipitadas embestidas podrían ser aprovechadas de forma decisiva por un Moloney más ordenado, con una habilidad ortodoxa y con más recursos ofensivos y defensivos.

In other words, for example the enthusiasm that many have now for the lightweight division, did not exist in the middle of the last decade. For its part, the middleweight division is experiencing just the opposite phenomenon, currently going through a moment of very little interest both due to a lack of activity at the top and due to the low average level of its top 15.
This partly explains how it is possible for a boxer with so many flaws and limitations like Canadian Steven «Bang Bang» Butler 32(26KO)-3(3)-1 to reach a world championship bout, which he will do this Saturday in the Stockton Arena in Stockton, United States, facing the WBO champion, Kazakh Janibek “Qazaq Style” Alimkhanuly 13(8KO)-0. In any case, this is a voluntary defense, and no one has forced Top Rank to pick Butler as an opponent. In fact, he has simply been chosen so Alimkhanuly could score a stoppage victory after his sub-par performance against Denzel Bentley.
Indeed, although Alimkhanuly achieved a clear victory and some analysts went too far praising the performance of the British fighter, the Kazakh did not have his best fight at all and had to work hard in a contested second half against Bentley, who showed enormous tenacity. It’s true that Butler packs a punch and if Alimkhanuly were as sloppy at middle distance as he was against Bentley, he could pay the price. Even so, the southpaw «Qazaq Style» has a very sharp straight left, a lot of precision and good technical-tactical qualities, so, if he applies himself, it is to be expected that he will use his distance control and his straight shots to damage Butler, who has a very simple boxing, and try to beat him in the first half.
A new champion after the Naoya Inoue era
The co-feature bout will be another world championship fight, in this case for the vacant WBO bantamweight belt. Thus, after the coronation of Takuma Inoue as WBA titleholder, a second new champion will be crowned on Saturday after the end of the Naoya Inoue era in the division. In the betting odds, the difference with Astrolabio is minimal, since the Filipino is in the best moment of his career, which he turned around upsetting Guillermo Rigondeaux and winning a final eliminator against Nikolay Potapov. However, Astrolabio no longer has the element of surprise on his side, and this time he is not facing a veteran with limitations in short-range boxing, but rather a versatile fighter in excellent shape and with better technique than him.
So while Astrolabio has a chance of success thanks to his tremendous explosiveness and power, the fact is that, if he fails to deal crucial damage, this time it looks like his defensive and tactical mistakes and his hasty lunges could be taken advantage of by Moloney, who is more composed, has an orthodox ability and more offensive and defensive resources.
