Previa: Katie Taylor y Chantelle Cameron pelean por la corona indiscutida del peso superligero

En la carrera profesional de la irlandesa, futura miembro del Salón de la Fama, Katie Taylor 22(6KO)-0 han destacado los nombres de dos rivales, siendo una Delfine Persoon y la otra Amanda Serrano. A estas boxeadoras, el sábado en el 3Arena de Dublín, Irlanda, se sumará otro gran nombre, ante el que Taylor sostendrá, sin duda, uno de los cuatro mayores duelos que ha afrontado en el boxeo de pago: combatirá contra la campeona indiscutida del peso superligero, la invicta británica Chantelle Cameron 17(8KO)-0.
Cameron es una muy sólida boxeadora, con mayores dimensiones que Taylor, cuatro años más joven y que, como la irlandesa, usa muy bien compactas combinaciones. Además, Cameron y Taylor han tenido resultados y actuaciones muy similares ante contrincantes en común como Anahí Sánchez, Victoria Bustos y Jessica McCaskill. Por ello, parece evidente que una Taylor que asciende de división y que pelea por primera vez en su Irlanda natal afrontará un combate importantísimo y muy exigente.
Desafortunadamente, las semanas previas a este encuentro se han visto manchadas por una gran polémica, dado que Cameron rechazó que su compañera de escuadra Ellie Scotney afrontase su primer mundial en el respaldo al ser esta entrenada por Shane McGuigan. Esto le supuso muchísimas y muy duras críticas a Cameron, para la cual esa presión se sumó a la de tener que combatir como visitante contra una top 3 libra por libra y en una pelea que podría cambiar para siempre su trayectoria.
De todos modos, hay que matizar que Cameron no tomó la decisión de evitar verse las caras con Shane McGuigan por mero capricho, sino porque tuvo unas serias discusiones con los McGuigan que le llevaron a terminar en malos términos su colaboración profesional con ellos.
Los detalles de la disputa no se han dado a conocer, porque los McGuigan, que se llevan mal con mucha gente en el mundo del boxeo (Frampton era un gran amigo de los McGuigan e incluso tuvo a Shane como padrino de bodas antes de terminar en los juzgados con él y afirmando que odia a la familia McGuigan) obligaron a Cameron a firmar un acuerdo de confidencialidad por el que no puede revelar concretamente qué jugarretas le hicieron. Aun así, Cameron sí ha podido señalar que se sintió aislada y humillada por ellos. De ese modo, resulta lógico que no quiera ver por los pasillos a Shane McGuigan en la noche más importante de su carrera profesional.
Por otro lado, Eddie Hearn, que conocía esta situación, perfectamente podría haber evitado esta polémica habiendo escogido otra fecha para la pelea de Scotney (de hecho ésta disputará su primer mundial finalmente sólo tres semanas más tarde) o preguntando a Cameron antes de confirmar a Scotney que iba a participar en el evento. De hecho, parece que esta controversia ha sido elaborada por Hearn para intentar dar un margen a una Taylor con la que el promotor afirmó que tiene, como con Anthony Joshua, una relación especial de amistad y alianza mucho más intensa que con sus demás boxeadores.
Sea como sea, y volviendo al enfrentamiento en sí, la clave del choque parece estar en dos aspectos. Uno de ellos es quién de las dos logrará imponer mejor sus armas en la distancia media, en la que han fraguado la gran mayoría de sus victorias, y el otro es cuál de las dos conseguirá ser más regular durante los diez episodios. No contando con gran pegada, siendo boxeadoras de élite y estando motivadísimas, parece improbable que una de las dos consiga un knockout, por lo que es de esperar una pugna muy igualada y contendida, con muchos rounds difíciles de puntuar y en la que, por lo tanto, ser consistente valdrá oro.
Evidentemente, este debería ser un muy buen duelo de boxeo femenino y debería tener momentos intensos y emocionantes, quizás con duros intercambios en los que las dos intentarán marcar la diferencia. No obstante, aunque es una cita ineludible en el calendario del boxeo femenino, parece improbable que, pase lo que pase en el ring, Taylor vaya a perder una decisión de los jueces ante un estadio repleto de sus seguidores.

In the professional career of Irish, future Hall of Famer, Katie Taylor 22(6KO)-0 the names of two opponents have stood out, one being Delfine Persoon and the other Amanda Serrano. On Saturday, at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, to these boxers another key name will be added, as Taylor will undoubtedly face one of the four biggest clashes she has had in prizefighting: she will fight against the undisputed super lightweight champion, the undefeated British Chantelle Cameron 17(8KO)-0.
Cameron is a very solid boxer, bigger than Taylor, four years younger and that, like the Irishwoman, uses compact combinations very well. In addition, Cameron and Taylor have had very similar results and performances against common opponents such as Anahí Sánchez, Victoria Bustos and Jessica McCaskill. Therefore, it seems clear that Taylor, who is moving up a division and fighting for the first time in her native Ireland, will face a very important and very hard match-up.
Unfortunately, the weeks leading up to this bout have been marred by a big controversy, since Cameron refused to let her squadmate Ellie Scotney face her first world title fight on the undercard, as she is trained by Shane McGuigan. This brought a lot of harsh criticism to Cameron, which added to the pressure of having to battle on the road against a top 3 pound-for-pound boxer and in a fight that could change her career forever.
In any case, it must be clarified that Cameron did not make the decision to avoid coinciding with Shane McGuigan on a mere whim, as she had some serious arguments with the McGuigans that led to the end of her professional collaboration with them on bad terms.
Details of the dispute have not been released, because the McGuigans, who get along badly with many people in the boxing world (Frampton was a close friend of the McGuigans, and Shane was even a groomsman in his wedding, before ending up facing them in a court and stating that he hates the McGuigan family) made Cameron sign a non-disclosure agreement by which she cannot reveal what they did to her. Even so, Cameron has pointed out that she felt isolated and humiliated by them. In this way, it is logical that she does not want to see Shane McGuigan in the corridors of the venue before one of the most important nights of her professional career.
On the other hand, Eddie Hearn, who was aware of this situation, could have perfectly avoided this controversy by choosing another date for Scotney’s fight (in fact, she will face her first world title bout only three weeks later) or by asking Cameron before confirming to Scotney that she would be participating in the event. In fact, it seems that this controversy has been elaborated by Hearn to try to give a little advantage to Taylor, with whom the promoter affirmed that he has, as with Anthony Joshua, a special relationship of friendship and alliance much more intense than with his other boxers.
Be that as it may, and returning to the fight, the key seems to be in two aspects. One of them is who of the two will be able to better impose her weapons in the middle distance, in which they have obtained the vast majority of their victories, and the other is which of the two will manage to be more regular during the ten episodes. Taking into account that both are elite boxers without a big punch and that they are extremely motivated, it seems unlikely that the bout will end by knockout, so a very even and contested fight is to be expected, with many rounds difficult to score and in which, therefore, being consistent will be decisive.
Obviously, this should be a very good women’s boxing match-up and it should have intense and exciting moments, perhaps with some hard exchanges. However, although the fight is a must see on the female boxing schedule, it seems unlikely that, whatever happens in the ring, Taylor will lose a decision in front of a stadium packed with her supporters.
