Previa: Josh Taylor y Teófimo López se cruzan en sus caminos hacia la autodestrucción

Desde sus orígenes, en el boxeo han habido muchos púgiles que, tras conseguir fama, fortuna y prestigio, han seguido un camino de autodestrucción que ha terminado llevándoles a una decisiva pérdida de rendimiento y de reputación y, en ocasiones, incluso a poner sus propias vidas en riesgo. Con todo, rara vez se ve un enfrentamiento entre dos boxeadores que estén ambos en caída libre y destruyendo con sus propias manos todo lo que habían conseguido como el británico Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor 19(13KO)-0 y el estadounidense Teófimo “The Takeover” López 18(13KO)-1.
Es este hecho el que hace que la pugna entre ambos esté, sobre el papel, tan abierta y que sea tan difícil pronosticar quién vencerá. Y es que, en otras palabras, más allá de lo boxístico, seguramente el ganador se decidirá en gran parte en base a quién está en un mejor momento mental pese a sus conocidas inestabilidades.
Comenzando por Taylor, éste siguió inicialmente un recorrido muy cercano a la perfección: después de ser olímpico, se convirtió en insigne prospecto del peso superligero, y luego en contendiente de élite, antes de proclamarse campeón mundial, ganar las World Boxing Super Series venciendo a Regis Prograis y aunar las cuatro coronas de la división en Estados Unidos ante José Carlos Ramírez. Sin embargo, después de esto todo cambió.
Disputas en una discoteca con un guardia de seguridad en la que se menciona consumo de drogas; comportamientos infantiles de confrontación con los medios por no darle todos los halagos que él creía que merecía; una inactividad más larga de lo que le convenía; una actuación por debajo de todas las expectativas ante Jack Catterall; y una reacción inmadura ante su controvertida victoria fueron algunos de los precedentes de Taylor antes de que tirase un año de su carrera burlándose de los contendientes prometiéndoles peleas que en ningún momento realmente pensaba disputar a la vez que era desposeído de tres de sus cinturones.
Este breve resumen haría que muchos apostantes huyesen de la idea de poner dinero en Taylor, pero el hecho más curioso es que se considera que éste tiene un pasado reciente mucho más positivo que Teófimo López, que en los últimos años ha tenido un comportamiento absolutamente errático y en el que se han podido ver de forma clara verdaderos problemas de salud mental.
Aunque fue inflado desmedidamente por la prensa estadounidense, López tuvo un avance más o menos sólido como prospecto del peso ligero, culminado en su rápida destrucción de Richard Commey, antes de convertirse en campeón unificado contra Lomachenko (de nuevo el ucraniano tuvo a los jueces en su contra, dando Julie Lederman un 119-109 para López que es una de las peores cartulinas de la historia reciente). Entonces, estando en la cresta de la ola, López se hundió.
Las peleas con su familia, que no aceptaban a su prometida y después esposa, afectaron al trabajo con su padre/entrenador, quien también recibió críticas por su falta de conocimientos; la actitud de abusón de López sobre el ring y su falta de profundidad táctica quedaron definitivamente de manifiesto ante un George Kambosos que le derribó y derrotó en, para muchos, la mayor sorpresa de 2021; esto llevó a López a inventarse todo tipo de patéticas excusas para justificar su derrota, mostrando su debilidad de carácter, cosa que coincidió con agresivos posts en sus redes sociales. Finalmente, su pésima actuación contra Sandor Martín, ante el que boxeó como alguien que nunca se ha medido a un rival móvil, le dejó en su punto moral más bajo, dando muestras evidentes de depresión antes de taparlo con bravuconería y absurdas promesas de grandeza.
Si todo hubiese acabado ahí, sería más que suficiente para dudar de qué queda del López que asombró a tantos fans, pero a esto hay que sumar, entre otras cosas, unas muy controvertidas declaraciones contra su promotora Top Rank y contra ESPN, un divorcio que le costará la mitad de su dinero y repetidas amenazas de matar en el ring a Taylor.
Después de hacer este recorrido, es lógico que muchos le quiten importancia a los elementos boxísticos del combate y se centren en evaluar las posibilidades de cada uno en función de su estado mental, comparativa en la que López sale perdiendo. De hecho, Taylor parte como favorito en las casas de apuestas, en lo que evidentemente influye también el hecho de que tiene muchísima más inteligencia de ring, mucha más variedad de recursos y que en sus noches más difíciles ha mostrado más dureza y persistencia que un López que suele tener problemas si no puede marcar la diferencia con su potencia y explosividad.
En este sentido, López, que tenía mucha ventaja en tamaño y peso tras la rehidratación sobre sus oponentes en el peso ligero, no tendrá tal margen ante un Taylor que a duras penas da el peso superligero y que es más grande que Sandor Martín. De todos modos, aunque “The Tartan Tornado” es más versátil, es verdad que la importancia de su altura y alcance podría minimizarse si se deja llevar por su predilección por intercambiar.
En fin, este es un combate muy interesante teniendo en cuenta las incertidumbres que rodean a ambos y que en él podrían empezar a reencaminar sus carreras o seguir hundiéndose más en el fango, debiéndose tener en cuenta que la posibilidad de una crisis grave en caso de derrota contrasta con el gran premio que podría esperarle al ganador.

Since the beginning of boxing there have been many fighters who, after achieving fame, fortune and prestige, have followed a path of self-destruction that has ended up leading them to a decisive drop in performance and to a loss of reputation and, on occasions, even to put their own lives at risk. However, it’s rare to see a fight between two boxers who are both free-falling and destroying with their hands everything they had achieved like British Josh «The Tartan Tornado» Taylor 19(13KO)-0 and American Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez 18(13KO)-1.
It is this fact that makes the clash between the two so intriguing on paper and makes it so difficult to predict who will win. In other words, beyond the boxing aspect, the winner will surely be decided largely based on who is in a better mental state despite their known instability.
Starting with Taylor, he initially followed a near-perfect run: after being an Olympian, he became a standout super lightweight prospect, and then an elite contender, before capturing a world belt, winning the World Boxing Super Series defeating Regis Prograis and unifying the four crowns of the division in the United States against José Carlos Ramírez. However, after this everything changed.
An argument in a nightclub with a bouncer in which drug use was mentioned; childish confrontational behavior with the media for not giving him all the praise he thought he deserved; a longer inactivity than was convenient for him; a performance against Jack Catterall well below all expectations; and an immature reaction to his controversial victory were some of the precedents for Taylor before he wasted a year of his career by promising fights to the contenders he never really intended to face and being stripped of three of his belts.
This brief summary would make many bettors shy away from the idea of putting money in Taylor, but the most curious fact is that he is considered to have a much more positive recent past than Teófimo López, who in recent years has had an absolutely erratic behavior in which true mental health problems have been clearly seen.
Although he was awfully hyped by the American press, Lopez had a fairly good run as a lightweight prospect, culminating in his fast destruction of Richard Commey, before becoming unified champion against Lomachenko (again the Ukrainian had the judges against him, with Julie Lederman scoring the bout 119-109 for López in one of the worst cards in recent history). However, when he was on the crest of the wave, López sank.
Disputes with his family, who did not accept his fiancée and later wife, affected his work with his father/coach, who also received criticism for his lack of knowledge; López’s bully attitude in the ring and his lack of tactical depth were definitely exposed against George Kambosos, who knocked him down and defeated him in, for many, the biggest upset of 2021; this led López to invent all kinds of pathetic excuses to justify his defeat, showing his weakness of character, which coincided with aggressive posts on his social networks. Finally, his very bad performance against Sandor Martín, against whom he boxed like someone who has never faced a mover, left him at his lowest point, showing evident signs of depression before covering it up with cockiness and absurd promises of greatness.
If everything had ended there, it would have been more than enough to doubt what remains of the boxer who amazed so many fans, but to this López added, among other things, some highly controversial statements against Top Rank and ESPN, a divorce that will cost him half of his money and repeated threats to kill Taylor in the ring.
After taking all this into account, it is logical that many downplay the boxing elements of the fight and focus on assessing the chances of each fighter based on their mental state, a comparison in which López is in a worse position. Actually, Taylor is the betting favorite, which is obviously also influenced by the fact that he has much more ring intelligence, and a greater variety of tactical resources, and that on his most difficult nights he has shown more toughness and persistence than López, who usually has problems if he can’t impose his power and explosiveness.
In this sense, López, who had a notable advantage in size and weight after rehydration over his opponents at lightweight, will not have such a margin against Taylor, who barely makes the super lightweight limit and who is bigger than Sandor Martín. In any case, although “The Tartan Tornado” is more versatile, it’s true that the importance of his height and reach could be minimized if he again exchanges unnecessarily.
In short, this is a very interesting fight taking into account the uncertainties that surround both of them and that in it they could begin to get back on track or continue sinking deeper into the mud, as it should be remembered that the possibility of a serious crisis in the event of defeat contrasts with the great prize that could await the winner.
