El campeón indiscutido del peso superwélter Jermell Charlo se mostró furioso cuando Brian Castaño se lesionó antes de la revancha entre ambos y el combate se tuvo que aplazar de marzo a mayo de 2022. De hecho, Charlo señaló públicamente que la lesión del argentino era falsa y que simplemente estaba buscando tener más tiempo para doparse. Es por esto que ha resultado muy curioso que Charlo lleve aplazando su combate contra el aspirante obligatorio Tim “The Soul Taker” Tszyu 22(16KO)-0 desde diciembre y que todavía no haya fecha para la pugna.
Hay que recordar que entonces Charlo alegó una fractura de su mano izquierda, lesión que a estas alturas debería estar sobradamente curada. Este hecho, y la falta de información por parte del equipo de Charlo, han provocado todo tipo de críticas y acusaciones contra él (incluidas las que señalan que se está dopando aprovechando que ahora no le están realizando tests).
En cualquier caso, tenga Charlo algo que ocultar o no, durante el tiempo que éste ha estado parado Tszyu ha afrontado ya un combate (ante Harrison) y este domingo (hora local) disputará un segundo duelo enfrentándose al mexicano Carlos “Chema” Ocampo 35(23KO)-2(1) en el Gold Coast Convention Centre de Broadbeach, Australia. En juego estará el título interino WBO del peso superwélter, o lo que es lo mismo, tener garantizado el acceso al mundial WBO de la división.
Los motivos de Tszyu para disputar este enfrentamiento son evidentes: mantenerse rodado y seguir acumulando impulso contrastando con la inactividad de Charlo, buscar poner a prueba su evolución y hacer ajustes ante un bravo boxeador que el año pasado aguantó doce rounds ante Sebastián Fundora y tratar de anotarse un contundente triunfo que le permita realizar una nueva declaración de intenciones.
A diferencia de la movilidad de Tony Harrison, Ocampo ofrece un tipo de boxeo mucho más directo y menos técnico, aunque esto no implica que sea sencillo, como pueden atestiguar un Mikael Zewski que fue batido por KOT contra pronóstico o el mismo Fundora, que fue dañado en una ocasión. Aun así, y aunque dejemos de lado la rapidísima derrota que “Chema” padeció ante Errol Spence, Tszyu tiene un despliegue ofensivo muy agresivo y en el que destacan su fuerza, su determinación y una destreza que va en aumento pelea tras pelea.
Por lo tanto, enfrentándose a un Ocampo que no es un boxeador dinámico, que es aguerrido pero menos potente y que seguramente tratará de intercambiar con garra en la distancia media, Tszyu parece estar claramente en posición de usar sus eficaces golpes de poder, su mejorada defensa y su ambición de knockout para lograr ser superior y obtener una buena victoria más.
Eliminatoria del peso supergallo
En el semifondo, se producirá una muy interesante eliminatoria IBF del peso supergallo entre dos invictos como el australiano Sam Goodman 14(7KO)-0 y el estadounidense Ra’eese Aleem 20(12KO)-0, quienes se jugarán convertirse en retador obligatorio del ganador del enfrentamiento por el título indiscutido Fulton-Inoue. Si bien Goodman es más joven (8 años), peleará como local, está más rodado y llega de anotarse la mayor victoria de su carrera, Aleem debería ser considerado el favorito, ya que tiene un mejor equilibrio técnica-potencia, mucha fluidez en sus acciones, pocos puntos débiles y una muy importante ventaja en experiencia de calidad.
De ese modo, aunque podría ser un combate táctico y con asaltos disputados, parece que Aleem tiene los recursos, el conocimiento y las cualidades físicas para lograr un triunfo si los jueces le tratan con justicia o si logra evitar el veredicto mostrándose suficientemente incisivo y persistente.
En Estados Unidos, Showtime televisará estos dos combates el sábado desde las 23:30 ET / 20:30 PT, las 5.30 de la madrugada en hora española.

Undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo was furious when Brian Castaño suffered an injury before their rematch and the fight had to be postponed from March to May 2022. In fact, Charlo publicly stated that the Argentine’s injury was false and that he was simply buying time to dope. This is why it has been very curious that Charlo has postponed his fight against mandatory challenger Tim “The Soul Taker” Tszyu 22(16KO)-0 since December and that there is still no date for the bout.
It must be remembered that then Charlo alleged a broken left hand, injury that should be fully healed by now. This fact, and the lack of information from Charlo’s team, have provoked all kinds of criticism and accusations against him (including those that point out that he is doping while he is not being tested).
In any case, whether or not Charlo has something to hide, during the time he has been inactive Tszyu has already faced a fight (against Harrison) and this Sunday (local time) he will battle in a second bout against Mexican Carlos «Chema» Ocampo 35(23KO)-2(1) at the Gold Coast Convention Center in Broadbeach, Australia. At stake will be the WBO interim super welterweight belt or, what is the same, having guaranteed access to a world title fight in the division.
Tszyu’s reasons for facing this fight are obvious: to stay active and continue accumulating momentum, contrasting with Charlo’s inactivity, to try to put his evolution to the test and make adjustments against a brave boxer who last year went twelve rounds against Sebastián Fundora and to seek to score a resounding victory to make a statement.
Unlike the agile Tony Harrison, Ocampo has a much more direct and less technical type of boxing, although this does not imply that he is an easy opponent, as Mikael Zewski (whom he stopped in an upset) or Fundora himself (who was hurt once) can confirm. Even so, and even if we put aside the very quick defeat that «Chema» suffered against Errol Spence, Tszyu has a very aggressive offensive display in which his strength, determination and an increase in skill fight after fight stand out.
Therefore, clashing against Ocampo, who is not a mover, who is brave but less powerful and will surely try to trade punches at middle distance, Tszyu seems clearly in position to use his effective power shots, his improved defense and his knockout ambition to be superior on the ring and score one more good win.
Super bantamweight eliminator
As for the co-feature, it will be a very interesting IBF super bantamweight eliminator between two undefeated boxers as Australian Sam Goodman 14(7KO)-0 and American Ra’eese Aleem 20(12KO)-0, who will battle to become mandatory challenger for the winner of the Fulton-Inoue fight. Although Goodman is younger (8 years), he will fight at home, has more recent activity and he is coming from obtaining the biggest victory of his career, Aleem should be considered the favorite, since he has a better technique-power balance, a lot of fluidity in his actions, few weak points and a very important advantage in quality experience.
Thus, although it could have close rounds, it seems that Aleem has the tactical resources, the knowledge and the physical qualities to achieve victory if the judges treat him fairly or if he manages to avoid the verdict by being incisive and persistent enough.
