Golden Boy Promotions ha confirmado qué combates compondrán el respaldo principal del evento Vergil Ortiz vs. Eimantas Stanionis del 8 de julio. En el semifondo, el prospecto del peso ligero Floyd Schofield se enfrentará al veterano Haskell Rhodes, que sólo ha peleado seis rounds en los últimos cuatro años. Antes de esta pugna, Marlen Esparza y Gabriela Alaniz se enfrentarán en una triple unificación WBA, WBC, WBO del peso mosca femenino y Joseph “Jo Jo” Díaz abrirá la cartelera emitida por DAZN enfrentándose a un oponente pendiente de confirmación.
Por otro lado, Teófimo López ha anunciado que deja vacante su cinturón WBO del peso superligero, insistiendo en su anunciada decisión de retirarse. No obstante, son absoluta mayoría quienes creen que realmente la “retirada” de López es una simple estrategia, quizás para evitar tener que repartir sus próximas grandes ganancias en su todavía no cerrado proceso de divorcio o quizás para intentar generar expectación respecto a un “retorno”, y que no tardará en regresar al ring.
En cuanto al próximo oponente de Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, sus dos opciones más difíciles, es decir Dmitry Bivol y David Benavídez, ya han sido descartados como rivales para septiembre. Ahora los dos principales candidatos a medirse a él son el peso medio Jermall Charlo, que no se sube al ring desde hace dos años, y el peso crucero Badou Jack, al que se dice que Canelo podría exigir un catchweight y un límite de rehidratación.
