Previa: “Maravilla” Martínez disputa este jueves ante McGowan su cuarto combate tras su retorno

Quizás muchos pensaban que su campaña a penas se prolongaría cuando se anunció el retorno al cuadrilátero del excampeón mundial argentino Sergio Martínez 54(30KO)-3(2)-2, pero este jueves en el Wizink Center de Madrid, España, “Maravilla” disputará ya su cuarto combate profesional en cerca de un año y medio de esta nueva etapa en su carrera.
Tal ritmo de combates resulta muy notable, tanto teniendo en cuenta las dificultades organizativas de la actualidad por las restricciones como valorando que boxeadores con 20 años menos que él sólo realizan una o dos peleas por temporada, marcando además la pugna un hito significativo, al ser el primer paso conjunto en la colaboración entre Maravillabox y Probellum.
Pasando a hablar de su contrincante, éste será el británico Macaulay McGowan 14(3KO)-2-1, un boxeador con muy pocos triunfos mencionables y que quizás sobre el papel no suponga un aumento de nivel respecto a Brian Rose, el último rival de Martínez. Aun así, McGowan tiene cualidades que le hacen un oponente adecuado, destacando sobre todo una tenacidad encomiable pese a sus limitaciones y un muy buen encaje, habiendo sido derribado en sus tres combates más importantes pero habiendo aguantando en ellos la distancia completa.
En cuanto a las peleas en las que no salió del cuadrilátero con la victoria, una fue un empate ante el bravo Jez Smith, que puso dos veces en el tapiz al top 3 WBA superwélter Kerman Lejarraga; otra fue una derrota unánime contra el destacado prospecto kazajo Tursynbay Kulakhmet; y la restante fue contra el fuerte y capaz extop 15 Kieron Conway. Por lo tanto, aunque quizás fue un tanto decepcionante su actitud “superviviente” ante Kulakhmet, en todos sus compromisos de calado McGowan ha mostrado resistencia y, en líneas generales, mucha voluntad.
Dicho esto, aunque si ofrece la agresividad y la valentía que mostró ante Conway (con la que disipó las críticas por su actuación ante Kulakhmet), McGowan podría generar un combate entretenido, interesante de ver y en el que Martínez necesitará aplicarse, el favorito para imponerse es un “Maravilla” que, incluso en la última fase de su carrera, está a otro nivel en cuanto a talento y habilidad.
Esto no quiere decir que sea previsible que el visitante se derrumbe a las primeras de cambio, todo lo contrario. Es probable que McGowan haga todo lo posible por aguantar de pie hasta el final y que, con ello, cumpla el deseo de Martínez de seguir sumando rounds para ajustar su timing y su ritmo. Con todo, si McGowan duda y se muestra expectante como en sus actuaciones menos inspiradas Martínez se anticipará a él y le controlará con sus afilados rectos, mientras que si el británico carga con toda su decisión quizás cree situaciones emocionantes o de cierto peligro que obliguen a “Maravilla” a reconducir la presión con sus piernas, si bien igualmente el extop libra por libra debería poder crear dificultades insalvables con su mezcla de astucia, precisión y heterodoxia sumadas a su posición de zurdo.
Vuelve Jonfer, nuevo combate para Bernard Torres
Entre los diversos duelos que compondrán el respaldo destacan por encima de todos dos. Uno será el retorno al cuadrilátero del peso ligero español Jon Fernández 21(18KO)-2(1) seis meses después de su derrota contra un Michel Rivera emplazado a un mayúsculo duelo en el entramado de PBC. El adversario de “Jonfer” será el zurdo ucraniano Andrii Boryshpolets 7(3KO)-1, púgil muy lejos de poder ser considerado favorito, entre otras cosas, por su desventaja en bagaje pero que padeció su única derrota a los puntos como visitante ante un prometedor púgil ruso de buen recorrido amateur como Pavel Fedorov.
El otro combate contará con la participación del peso pluma noruego-filipino Bernard Angelo “La Máquina” Torres 15(7KO)-0, interesante prospecto, versátil y sólido, que disputará su primer choque pactado a diez rounds ante un zurdo como él, el argentino Mauro Álex Hasan Perouane 13(6KO)-4(1)-1, más conocido por las valientes actuaciones que tuvo en sus derrotas ante dos exclasificados como Moussa Gholam (KOT 8º) y Liam Wilson (decisión unánime).

Preview: “Maravilla” Martínez fights this Thursday against McGowan in his fourth bout after his return

Perhaps many thought that his campaign would barely last when the return to the ring of former world champion Sergio Martínez 54(30KO)-3(2)-2 was announced, but this Thursday at the Wizink Center in Madrid, Spain, “Maravilla” will fight in his fourth professional bout of this new stage in his career, that for now has lasted about a year and a half.
Such a rhythm of fights is very remarkable taking into account the current organizational difficulties due to restrictions and considering that boxers 20 years younger than him only fight one or two times per season. The fight is also a significant milestone: the first joint step in the collaboration between Maravillabox and Probellum.
Regarding his opponent, he will be British Macaulay McGowan 14(3KO)-2-1, a boxer with very few mentionable wins and who perhaps on paper isn’t an increase in level compared to Brian Rose, Martinez’s last rival. Even so, McGowan has qualities that make him a suitable opponent, above all a commendable tenacity despite his limitations and a very good chin. As an example it can be stated that he suffered knockdowns in his three most important fights but he reached the final bell.
About this fights in which he did not leave the ring with the victory, one was a draw against the brave Jez Smith, who put twice on the mat the WBA super welterweight top 3 Kerman Lejarraga; another was a unanimous loss against Kazakh prospect Tursynbay Kulakhmet; and the remaining one was against the strong and capable Kieron Conway. So while his ‘survival’ attitude against Kulakhmet was perhaps a bit disappointing, in all of his major matches McGowan has shown resilience and, overall, a lot of will.
That being said, although if he usses the aggressiveness and bravery he showed against Conway (with which he dispelled criticism for his performance against Kulakhmet), McGowan could make for an entertaining and interesting fight to watch, one in that Martinez would need to put effort, the favorite of the match is the Argentine, who even in the last phase of his career is at another level in talent and skill.
This does not mean that it is foreseeable that the visitor will lose early, quite the opposite. It is likely that McGowan will do everything possible to stay on his feet until the end and that, in doing so, he will fulfill Martinez’s wish to continue adding rounds to adjust his timing and his rhythm. However, if McGowan hesitates as in his less inspired performances, Martínez will anticipate and control him with his sharp straight punches, while if the Brit marches forward with decision, he may create exciting or somewhat dangerous situations that will force “Maravilla” to redirect the pressure with his legs, although the former pound-for-pound top 3 should still be able to create insuperable difficulties with his mixture of cunning, precision and unorthodoxy added to his southpaw stance.
Jonfer returns, new fight for Bernard Torres
Among the various duels that will compose the support, two stand out. One will be the return to the ring of Spanish lightweight Jon Fernández 21(18KO)-2(1) six months after his defeat against Michel Rivera, who will fight soon in a major duel on a PBC card. Jonfer’s opponent will be the Ukrainian southpaw Andrii Boryshpolets 7(3KO)-1, a boxer far from being considered favorite, among other things, due to his disadvantage in experience but who suffered his only loss on points as a visitor against Pavel Fedorov, a promising Russian boxer with a good amateur career.
The other fight will put on the ring Norwegian-Filipino featherweight Bernard Angelo «La Máquina» Torres 15(7KO)-0, an interesting, versatile and solid prospect who will have his first ten-round match against a southpaw like him, the Argentinian Mauro Álex Hasan Perouene 13(6KO)-4(1)-1, boxer best known for the courageous performances he had in his losses against former ranked boxers Moussa Gholam (TKO 8th) and Liam Wilson (unanimous decision).
