Ilunga Makabu retuvo su cinturón mundial crucero con decisión dividida en revancha ante mala versión de Thabiso Mchunu

Días antes del combate el retador obligatorio WBC crucero Thabiso Mchunu 23(13KO)-6(3) explicó claramente cuáles habían sido los errores que le costaron la derrota en su primer combate contra Ilunga Makabu 29(25KO)-2(2). ¿Qué hizo entonces en la revancha Mchunu? Cometer agravados los mismos fallos de la vez anterior hasta el punto de no merecer coronarse ante Makabu, especialmente en cuanto a actitud, que fue realmente pobre. Aun así uno de los jueces quiso ser generoso con Mchunu y le dio a su favor una cartulina de 115-113, que fue compensada por tarjetas justas de 116-112 y 115-113.
Se debe subrayar, eso sí, que se ha levantado una gran controversia respecto al veredicto, sobre todo por parte de muchos fans y analistas que con ello pretenden generar oposición a una pelea Canelo-Makabu. No obstante, una cosa no quita la otra y no se necesita tergiversar lo sucedido en el duelo: Mchunu no hizo suficiente para ganar y aunque Makabu venció igualmente sería un pésimo rival para Canelo.
Cuando Mchunu se movió, contragolpeó y utilizó un boxeo oportunista sus resultados fueron positivos pero, aunque señaló que no lo haría, volvió a pararse a intercambiar de más cuerpo a cuerpo, conectando hooks claros por su rapidez y precisión pero recibiendo también poderosos ganchos del pegador Makabu. De hecho, no es que Mchunu no supiese evitar la distancia corta, sino que, en un ejemplo increíble de incongruencia, sabiendo que había sucumbido en el primer choque ante Makabu al quedarse demasiado estático, en la revancha en muchas ocasiones buscó deliberadamente una pelea física.
Respecto al rendimiento del campeón en la pelea, nuevamente se mostró fácil de golpear, erró muchas manos y tuvo un boxeo tan tosco como simple, recibiendo algunos puños impactantemente nítidos (como un gancho diestro en el quinto asalto), que ayudaron a que se crease la polémica al decantar la impresión general de muchos. Pero encontrándose con una versión de Mchunu mucho menos dinámica de lo previsto lo cierto es que también encontró facilidades para trabajar con sus golpes de poder en corta y media. Por lo tanto, Makabu pudo, cuanto menos, mantener el combate contendido gracias a un Mchunu que, siendo objetivos, necesitaba más frecuencia de golpeo, más actividad de piernas y no contentarse con destellos salteados.
Pasada la mitad, el retador comenzó a verse reducido a las cuerdas, donde se mantuvo estático prolongadamente y recibió uppercuts combinados con directos, por lo que Makabu terminó asegurándose entonces el triunfo a los puntos incluso pese a tener un escaso ritmo de pelea y una notable imprecisión. Tardíamente, Mchunu sacó de nuevo duros contragolpes pero, sorprendiendo aún más con su decepcionante actuación, por lo general al final no puso garra para intentar reducir las dudas o demostrar superioridad, sino que finalmente se dejó arrastrar a la derrota sin ofrecer la oposición que habría sido capaz de generar. Y es que en su mejor versión Mchunu podría haber anulado totalmente a Makabu.
En cambio, el aspirante terminó el combate frustrado y enfadado e incluso empujó a su rival cuando intentó saludarle, actitud que difícilmente es la de alguien que se siente ganador…
Después de este combate, quienes no hubiesen visto pelear hasta ahora a Makabu comprenderán cuál es el motivo de que Canelo haya puesto sus miras en él y no en otro para un posible asalto al cinturón del peso crucero. El titular Makabu es muy limitado técnicamente, cae con facilidad en los contragolpes y en esta ocasión ni siquiera pudo noquear a un púgil como Mchunu que ha padecido varios knockdowns en su carrera y que tuvo la peor elección estratégica posible y una actitud realmente mala. Así que un Canelo con un gran encaje, que en los últimos tiempos encuentra huecos con mucha facilidad, que ha mejorado muchísimo su defensa y que es capaz de contragolpear avanzando con eficacia debería poder vencer solventemente a Makabu, que ni siquiera es más alto que Caleb Plant, el último rival al que superó Álvarez.

Days before the fight, WBC cruiserweight mandatory challenger Thabiso Mchunu 23(13KO)-6(3) clearly explained the mistakes that cost him the loss in his first fight against Ilunga Makabu 29(25KO)-2(2). So what did Mchunu do in the rematch? He made the same mistakes from the previous time aggravated to the point of not deserving to be crowned against Makabu, especially in terms of attitude, which was really poor. Even so, one of the judges wanted to be generous with Mchunu and gave him a card of 115-113 in his favor, which was compensated by fair scorecards of 116-112 and 115-113.
It should be noted, however, that a great controversy has arisen regarding the verdict, especially from many fans and analysts who seek to generate opposition to a Canelo-Makabu fight. However, one thing does not rule out the other and there is no need to distort what happened in the duel: Mchunu didn’t do enough to win and although Makabu won he would still be a very bad opponent for Canelo.
When Mchunu moved, counter-punched and used opportunistic boxing, his results were positive but, although he indicated that he would not do it, he returned to exchange more than was convenient, landing clear hooks due to his speed and precision but also receiving powerful hooks from the puncher Makabu. In fact, it is not that Mchunu did not know how to avoid the close range: in an incredible example of incongruity, knowing that he had succumbed in the first match against Makabu by being too static, in the rematch he deliberately sought a physical fight on many occasions.
Regarding the champion’s performance in the fight, he was again easy to hit, missed many hands and boxed in an unpolished way, so he received some shockingly sharp punches (such as a right hook in the fifth round), which helped to create controversy by general impression. But finding a much less dynamic version of Mchunu than expected, the truth is that he also found it easy to work with his power punches in close and mid range. So Makabu was able to, at least, keep the fight contended thanks to Mchunu, who needed more attack frequency, more leg activity and not to content with sporadic flashes.
After the half point, the challenger began to be pushed to the ropes, where he remained static for a long time and received uppercuts combined with straight punches, so Makabu ended up securing the victory on points even despite having a poor fight rhythm and a remarkable lack of precision. When the conclusion was approaching Mchunu again unleashed hard counterpunches but, completing his disappointing performance, in the end he did not put effort to try to reduce doubts or show superiority, but finally allowed himself to be dragged into defeat without offering the opposition that he would have been capable of generating: the best version of Mchunu could have totally annulled Makabu.
Instead, the challenger ended the fight frustrated and angry and even pushed his rival, an attitude that is hardly that of someone who feels like a winner…
After this fight, those who have not seen Makabu fight before now will understand why Canelo set his sights on him for a possible cruiserweight championship fight. The belt holder Makabu is very limited technically, is vulnerable to counterpunches and this time he couldn’t even knock out a fighter like Mchunu, who has suffered several knockdowns in his career and who had the worst possible strategic choice and a bad attitude. So a boxer like Canelo, with a very resistant chin, who lately finds breaches very easily in his rivals, who has greatly improved his defense and who is able to counterattack effectively moving forward should be able to beat Makabu, who is not even taller than Caleb Plant, the last boxer Alvarez beat.
