En los últimos meses el campeón mundial IBF del peso crucero Mairis Briedis 28(20KO)-1 se ha dedicado a tirarse a sí mismo por el barro en una patética persecución de una pelea contra el youtuber Jake Paul. La escalada en la autohumillación ha ido a más hasta perder el control, dando la sensación de que Briedis, que se está acercando al retiro, estaba dispuesto a hacer cualquier cosa a cambio de una buena bolsa antes de salir del boxeo, algo que ha resultado especialmente penoso de ver teniendo en cuenta que para muchos es el número 1 de la categoría del peso crucero, además de un boxeador que venció a Yunier Dorticós y que perdió por la mínima ante un futuro Salón de la Fama como Oleksandr Usyk.
Finalmente, gracias a una orden de defensa oficial emitida por la IBF, el letón Briedis se ha visto obligado a poner fin a su lamentable espectáculo y a encarar un combate contra un boxeador de verdad, el invicto australiano Jai Opetaia 21(17KO)-0. Además, Briedis, que se ha visto favorecido por varios resultados controvertidos en su trayectoria, esta vez no peleará ni en Letonia ni en una velada de su promotor (Sauerland, ahora fusionada con Wasserman), sino que lo hará en Australia y en una cartelera organizada por la compañía que representa a su rival, D & L Events del promotor Dean Lonergan.
Aunque durante días ya hubo rumores al respecto, Jake Donovan ha informado de que el duelo tendrá lugar el día 6 de abril en una sede por confirmar en el citado país oceánico.
Algunos señalan que Opetaia no cuenta con experiencia combatiendo ante el top 15 y que se quedará corto en este primer asalto titular. Con todo, aunque es cierto que no posee victorias de gran calibre, parece precipitado considerar que no estará a la altura de las circunstancias, ya que es un boxeador de gran carrera amateur (fue olímpico, medallista mundial junior y bronce juvenil, etc.), cuenta con gran pegada (81% de KO), es zurdo, 11 años más joven y tiene ventaja en altura y alcance.
Por otro lado, en su mayor test ante el exretador mundial Mark Flanagan, Opetaia venció por KOT en el octavo asalto, un round menos de lo que necesitó el monarca WBA actual Arsen Goulamirian. Además, Flanagan llegó a consumir la distancia contra el entonces campeón mundial Denis Lebedev y contra el prospecto David Light.
En definitiva, Opetaia hasta que no demuestre lo contrario es sobre el papel un muy serio reto para cualquier peso crucero actual, más aún para un boxeador como Briedis que tiene un excelente instinto boxístico pero no tanta inteligencia de ring, que recientemente ha perdido el rumbo en cuanto a sus aspiraciones y objetivos y que está en la última fase de su carrera.

The escalation in self-humiliation has spiraled out of control, giving the impression that Briedis, who is nearing retirement, was willing to do anything for a good purse before leaving boxing. This was something sad to see especially taking into account that Briedis is for many the number 1 in the division, as well as a boxer who beat Yunier Dorticós and who lost by narrow decision against a future Hall of Fame member like Oleksandr Usyk.

On the other hand, in his biggest test against former world challenger Mark Flanagan, Opetaia beat him by TKO in the eighth round, one round less than current WBA champion Arsen Goulamirian needed. In short, until proven otherwise, on paper Opetaia is a very serious challenge for any current cruiserweight, even more so for a boxer like Briedis who has excellent boxing instincts but limited ring intelligence, who has recently lost his mind regarding his aspirations and goals and who is in the last phase of his career.
