Previa: Jaime Munguía sigue aplazando una pelea de calado en el peso medio combatiendo contra Ballard en evento de DAZN

Hay jovencísimos prospectos con 18 peleas profesionales y escaso recorrido amateur a los que muchos expertos presionan para que acometan combates ante la cumbre aunque saben perfectamente que no están listos para ellos. En cambio, para un excampeón mundial con 38 combates y cerca de 9 años de carrera profesional como Jaime Munguía 38(30KO)-0 se crean todo tipo de excusas para su bochornosa actitud en el peso medio, división en la que simple y llanamente está aplazando al máximo cualquier pelea ante la élite.
Se debe recordar que Munguía es el número 1 del ranking WBO del peso medio desde hace 26 meses (2 años y 2 meses) pero no ha movido ni un dedo para pedir la pelea titular. De hecho, no sólo no ha buscado la oportunidad mundialista obligatoria, sino que una vez que se ha tenido que crear un interinato en el organismo tampoco ha aceptado medirse al boxeador que le seguía en el ranking, el kazajo Janibek Alimkhanuly. Algunos señalarán que esto es simplemente debido a que deseaba seguir la ruta WBC, si bien esto también es muy cuestionable.
Primeramente, Munguía se las apañó para aplazar durante meses una ordenada eliminatoria WBC ante Sergiy Derevyanchenko, pelea que evitó para afrontar un duelo a medida contra Gabriel Rosado, aunque muy bien vendido por la promotora explotando la inesperada victoria de éste sobre Melikuziev. Después de vencer a “King” Rosado, teóricamente ya no había más escapatorias y tenía que pelear en la antesala titular contra Carlos Adames, que había vencido a Derevyanchenko, pero Munguía volvió a evitar este combate para pactar otro combate a medida más, esta vez contra el estadounidense D’Mitrius Ballard 21(13KO)-0-1, al que se enfrentará el sábado en la Plaza Monumental de Tijuana, México, en el choque estelar de una velada emitida por DAZN.
Como excusa, Munguía ha señalado que Adames no estaba listo para la pelea, pero el dominicano y su equipo lo han negado tajantemente, señalando que realmente nunca se les llegó a proponer el duelo. En cualquier caso, incluso aunque Adames no quisiese pelear tan pronto contra Munguía, eso no es excusa para que este último escogiese a un rival sin posibilidades de triunfo como Ballard.
Al margen de algunas actuaciones más o menos meritorias, el estadounidense viene de dejar una nefasta imagen ante el modesto y veterano Paul Valenzuela Jr., boxeador noqueado en un round tanto por Ali Akhmedov como por Steven Butler, y batido en el segundo asalto por el propio Munguía, pero ante el que Ballard necesitó los diez asaltos para imponerse en una decisión que para los observadores imparciales fue muy ajustada o incluso controvertida.
Además, el boxeo que Ballard puso sobre el ring fue sorprendentemente malo, incluso en varios momentos dejándose atropellar hacia las cuerdas por un boxeador de nivel bajo y en la recta final de su carrera sin ser capaz de efectuar ajustes de calado. Por ello, un Munguía muy contundente, fuerte y que está evolucionando hasta tener una buena selección de golpes y un aceptable orden combativo, no debería tener problema alguno para conectar sus golpes de poder, presionar y poner a prueba el encaje de su rival.
Si Munguía optase por tomarse la pelea con calma y seguir ajustando su defensa con intervalos tácticos, quizás el enfrentamiento se podría prolongar más e incluso Ballard, si ofrece la mejor actuación de su vida, podría encontrar ventanas para mantener algunos rounds contendidos o incluso capturarlos antes de terminar igualmente derrotado. Pero si el mexicano muestra una mínima decisión y constancia a la hora de acometer con potencia, resultará inevitable que castigue duramente a su adversario y que logre una amplísima victoria por una u otra vía.
Evidentes favoritos
Si se cumple lo que se confirmó en nota de prensa oficial, el respaldo emitido por DAZN contará con tres peleas, dos de ellas muy mal emparejadas. En una, el temible pegador del peso ligero William “Camarón” Zepeda 24(22KO)-0 se anotará un KO ante el costarricense Yerel Siezar 19(8KO)-0, que ha vencido a rivales con un espantoso récord combinado de 140-234, mientras que en otra el peso pluma Rafael “El Divino” Espinoza 17(14KO)-0 se medirá a un Alie Laurel 18(11KO)-6-1 que, pese a contar con encaje y con alguna actuación encomiable en el pasado, no ha ganado ni un solo asalto en sus dos últimos combates.
Finalmente, la cartelera se abrirá con una pelea del peso superligero en la que Diego “Azabache” Torres 13(13KO)-0 tratará de mantener su 100% de knockouts en su mayor test contra el también mexicano Jonathan Escobedo 8(2KO)-2-1, un boxeador voluntarioso, que ha superado las expectativas en varias ocasiones y que llega de truncar el récord invicto del prospecto Jimerr Espinosa.
Este evento será emitido por DAZN el sábado desde las 18:00 en hora de Tijuana, las 3:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en hora española y las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT.

There are very young prospects with 18 professional fights and little amateur experience who are pressured by many experts to fight against the boxers of the top, even though is evident that they are not ready. On the other hand, for a former world champion with 38 fights and close to 9 years of professional career like Jaime Munguía 38(30KO)-0, all kinds of excuses are created for his embarrassing attitude at middleweight, division in which he is simply postponing all that he can any fight against the elite.
It should be remembered that Munguía has been number 1 in the WBO middleweight ranking for 26 months (2 years and 2 months) but he has not moved a finger to ask for that title fight. In fact, it is not only that he has not put pressure for the mandatory opportunity, but once an interim title had been created in the organization he has not accepted to face the boxer who followed him in the ranking, the Kazakh Janibek Alimkhanuly. Some will point out that this is simply because he wanted to go through the WBC route, although this too is highly questionable.
Firstly, Munguía managed to postpone for months an ordered WBC eliminator against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, a fight that he avoided to face Gabriel Rosado in a duel tailor made for him but very well sold by his promoter exploiting the unexpected victory of “King” over Melikuziev. After beating Rosado, theoretically there was no escape and he had to fight in an eliminator Carlos Adames, who had beaten Derevyanchenko, but Munguía again avoided this bout for another easy fight, this time against the American D’Mitrius Ballard 21(13KO)-0-1, whom he will face in the Plaza Monumental of Tijuana, Mexico, in the main clash of an evening broadcasted by DAZN.
As an excuse, Munguía has stated that Adames was not ready to fight against him in February, but the Dominican and his team have categorically denied it, pointing out that the duel was never really proposed to them. In any case, even if Adames did not want to fight Munguía so soon, that is no excuse for the latter to choose a rival with no chance of victory like Ballard.
Apart from some more or less meritorious performances, the American has just offered a disastrous image against the modest and veteran Paul Valenzuela Jr., a boxer knocked out in one round by both Ali Akhmedov and Steven Butler, and beaten in the second round by Munguía himself, but against whom Ballard needed all ten rounds to win a decision that, for the impartial observers, was very close or even controversial.
In addition, the boxing that Ballard put into the ring was surprisingly poor, even allowing to be cornered in various moments by a low-level fighter and in the final stretch of his career without being able to make adjustments. For this reason, a very powerful and strong boxer like Munguía, who is evolving and has now a good selection of shots and an acceptable tactical order, should have no problem connecting his power shots, pressuring and testing his rival’s chin.
If Munguia chooses a slow pace to continue adjusting his defense in tactical intervals, perhaps the bout will last longer and maybe Ballard, if he puts on the best performance of his life, can find windows to keep a few rounds contested or even capture them before ending up defeated. But if the Mexican shows a bit of decision and perseverance attacking with power, it will be inevitable that he severely punishes his opponent and achieves a wide victory by one way or another.
Obvious favorites
If what was confirmed in the official press release is true, the support streamed by DAZN will have three fights, two very poorly matched. In one, fearsome lightweight puncher William “Camarón” Zepeda 24(22KO)-0 will score a KO against Costa Rican Yerel Siezar 19(8KO)-0, who has beaten opponents with an awful combined record of 140-234, while in the another featherweight Rafael «El Divino» Espinoza 17(14KO)-0 will face Alie Laurel 18(11KO)-6-1 who, despite having some meritorious performances, has not won a single round in his last two bouts.
Finally, the broadcast will open with a super lightweight fight in which Diego “Azabache” Torres 13(13KO)-0 will try to maintain his 100% knockout rate in his biggest test to date against fellow Mexican Jonathan Escobedo 8(2KO)-2-1, a willful boxer, with several performances above expectations and who comes from breaking the undefeated record of prospect Jimerr Espinosa.
This event will be broadcasted on DAZN on Saturday from 6:00 p.m. in Tijuana time, 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.
