Kell Brook le asestó otro derrota antes del límite a Khan. Jonas se proclamó campeona mundial y el bronce olímpico Clarke debutó con victoria

Increíblemente habían muchos aficionados y expertos que estaban completamente seguros de que Amir Khan 34(21KO)-6(5) lograría una espectacular victoria, afirmando estos que el haber entrenado con el equipo de Terence Crawford le conferiría grandes capacidades, aptitudes que no ha tenido en toda su carrera, ni siquiera cuando estaba en plenitud. Con todo, aunque sorprendiese a algunos, Khan, el peso wélter de la parte alta con peor encaje de la última década, ahora además al borde del retiro y con dos años y medio de inactividad, a penas pudo resistir los puños de su archirival Kell Brook 40(28KO)-3(3), que le dejó tocado constantemente durante seis asaltos antes de vencerle por KOT.
La velocidad de Khan fue verdaderamente fulgurante en el comienzo, pero sólo fueron manotazos mal ejecutados y totalmente imprecisos. Por su parte, Brook aguardaba su momento, que llegó tan pronto como en el primer asalto, en el que estremeció gravemente en un par de ocasiones a Khan con golpes que no parecían excesivamente potentes. En el segundo round, de nuevo, Khan sacó muy veloces manos, teniendo acierto con varios directos diestros, aunque un gancho diestro aislado de Brook volvió a hacer tambalear a su contrincante.
Daba la sensación de que en un momento u otro, más allá de sus destellos, Khan recibiría un puño decisivo que pondría fin al duelo aunque durante la mayoría del tiempo del round corriese por el ring sacando rectos. De hecho, en el tercer asalto otra vez Khan quedó tocado por un curvo aislado de Brook, viéndose obligado a agarrarse a la desesperada y certificando definitivamente que su característico mal encaje es ya directamente nulo en esta fase de su carrera. Además, Khan, como en todas sus derrotas por knockout, cada vez estaba menos dinámico y se quedaba más veces en posiciones estáticas, por lo que era inevitable que llegase su derrota, siendo otra vez dañado por un directo y posteriores ganchos en el quinto asalto.
Por voluntad Khan se negaba a caer, pero el espectáculo era penoso de ver, siendo movido por casi cada puño que le llegaba. Si no hubiese sido una pelea entre nombres famosos, el árbitro la habría parado antes, pero permitió que el vapuleo siguiese hasta que en el sexto asalto ya finalmente detuvo la desniveladísima pugna.
Aunque a algunos les hagan gracia sus excentricidades y su completa falta de realismo sobre su nivel y cualidades, Khan se ha convertido en una caricatura de sí mismo y, ahora que ha sumado una última gran bolsa, debería retirarse definitivamente y no continuar siendo castigado innecesariamente. En cuanto a Brook, aunque logró una victoria que a ojos de muchos resultará espléndida y un “renacer” en su carrera, lo cierto es que sólo aprovechó que la resistencia a los golpes de Khan es bajísma, por lo que, aunque se intentará venderlo como un peso wélter de élite en un gran momento y como un serio candidato para grandes nombres actuales, eso sólo es un espejismo y no debería tardar en colgar los guantes también.
Jonas se coronó, Clarke debutó con victoria
La olímpica británica Natasha Jonas 11(8KO)-2(1)-1 había disputado campeonatos mundiales en el peso superpluma y en el peso ligero, si bien en ambos casos no logró coronarse por mínima diferencia: empató contra Terri Harper y perdió por un punto en dos de las tarjetas contra Katie Taylor. Sin embargo, este sábado, en el semifondo del Khan-Brook, Jonas logró proclamarse monarca WBO del peso superwélter capturando el cinturón vacante ante la sustituta uruguaya Chris Namús 25(8KO)-7(2), a quien derrotó por KOT en el segundo round.
Jonas conectó directos y ganchos al torso antes de impactar un duro curvo diestro que estalló contra Namús y la derribó. La visitante logró llegar al segundo episodio, pero al comienzo de este Jonas sentenció la pugna volviendo a tumbar a su rival: con una combinación de ganchos precedió a un directo que desequilibró y sentó en el tapiz a Namús, que se levantó pero que no pudo evitar que el árbitro diese por finalizado el duelo.
Este combate tuvo lugar antes del exitoso debut profesional del peso pesado, bronce olímpico, Frazer “The Eraser” Clarke 1(1KO)-0, que terminó en el primer asalto con el debutante, en muy mal estado de forma, Jake Darnell 0(0KO)-1(1).
Loas combinaciones de hooks de Clarke y sus directos al rostro empujaron hacia las cuerdas a Darnell, quien pese a sus golpes disuasorios y a sus desplazamientos rápidamente se vio desbordado por la ofensiva del favorito. Así, con Clarke descargando sus golpes de poder con precisión y contundencia y sin que su adversario pudiese hacer mucho más que recibir golpes y tratar de aguantar de pie, la esquina de Darnell lanzó la toalla.

Incredibly, there were many fans and experts who were completely sure that Amir Khan 34(21KO)-6(5) would achieve a spectacular victory, as they stated that having trained with Terence Crawford’s team would give him great abilities that he has not had in all his career, not even when he was at his peak. All in all, although it surprised some, Khan, the welterweight from the top with the worst chin of the last decade, now also on the verge of retirement and with two and a half years of inactivity, could barely resist the punches of Kell Brook 40(28KO)-3(3), who hurt him constantly for six rounds before winning by TKO.
Khan’s speed was truly blazing early on, but his punches were poorly executed and totally inaccurate. For his part, Brook awaited his moment, which came as early as in the first round, in which he rocked Khan badly a couple of times with punches that didn’t seem overly powerful. In the second round, again, Khan threw very fast hands, hitting his rival with several straight rights, though a right hook from Brook staggered him again.
It seemed that at one point or another, regardless of his flashes, Khan would receive a decisive punch that would end the duel even though for the most part of the round he was running around the ring landing straight shots. In fact, in the third round, Khan was again hurt by a hook from Brook, being forced to clinch desperately and definitively certifying that his characteristic poor chin is even worse at this stage of his career. In addition, Khan, as in all his knockout losses, was becoming less dynamic and was more times in static positions, so it was inevitable that his defeat would come sooner or later, being again damaged by a direct shot and subsequent hooks in the fifth round.
Solely by will Khan refused to go down, but it was painful to watch, as he was shook by almost every fist that landed on him. If it had not been a fight between famous boxers, the referee would have stopped it earlier, but he allowed the thrashing to continue until in the sixth round he finally stopped the very uneven fight.
Although some may find his eccentricities and his complete lack of realism about his level and qualities amusing, Khan has become a caricature of himself and, now that he has added one last big purse, he should definitely retire and not continue to be punished unnecessarily. As for Brook, although he achieved a victory that in the eyes of many will be splendid and the sign of a «rebirth» in his career, the truth is that he only took advantage of the fact that Khan’s resistance to the punches is gone. So, although many will try to sell Brook as an elite welterweight at a great moment and as a serious contender for today’s big names, that’s just a mirage and he should hang up his gloves soon as well.
Jonas became champion, Clarke debuted with victory
British Olympic Natasha Jonas 11(8KO)-2(1)-1 had fought in world championships at super featherweight and lightweight, although in both cases she didn’t became champion by a narrow difference: she drawed against Terri Harper and lost by a point on two of the scorecards against Katie Taylor. However, this Saturday, in the Khan-Brook co-feature, Jonas captured the vacant WBO super welterweight belt against Uruguayan substitute Chris Namús 25(8KO)-7(2), who was defeated in the second round by TKO.
Jonas landed straight punches and hooks to the body before landing a hard right hook that knocked down Namús. The visitor managed to reach the second round, but at the beginning of it Jonas close the fight by knocking down his rival again: with a combination of hooks she preceded a straigh punch that unbalanced and sat on the canvas Namús, who got up but could not prevent the referee from ending the duel.
This bout took place before the successful professional debut of the heavyweight Frazer “The Eraser” Clarke 1(1KO)-0, Olympic bronze medalist who ended in the first round with the debutant, in very bad shape, Jake Darnell 0(0KO)-1(1).
The combination of hooks and straight punches of Clarke pushed towards the ropes Darnell, who despite his dissuasive shots and his movements was quickly overwhelmed by the favorite’s offense. So, with Clarke throwing his power punches with precision and forcefulness and with his opponent unable to do much more than take hits and try to stay on his feet, Darnell’s corner threw in the towel.
