Con victorias ante boxeadores del calibre de Regis Prograis y José Carlos Ramírez, el británico Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor 18(13KO)-0 no sólo se convirtió en el número 1 de la categoría del peso superligero y en monarca indiscutido al aunar las cuatro coronas de la división, sino que directamente surgió como un top 10 libra por libra. Es por ello que lo que los aficionados quieren es verlo encarar nuevos retos en el peso wélter, categoría a la que teóricamente ascenderá en el futuro próximo y en la que se encontrará con enormes exponentes del pugilismo mundial.
De todos modos, antes de poner rumbo hacia nuevos horizontes, Taylor se dará un baño de masas ante su público combatiendo en el SSE Hydro de Glasgow, Reino Unido, ante el también británico Jack “El Gato” Catterall 26(13KO)-0. Esta es una defensa obligatoria WBO, si bien se debe tener en cuenta que Taylor y su equipo han aceptado disputarla debido únicamente a que cumple bien con sus propósitos, ya que como top libra por libra, y sin tener que demostrar nada más en el peso superligero, podría haber abandonado sin reproches sus coronas y con ello haberse desprendido de este requerimiento titular.
Con todo, Taylor lleva sin combatir cerca de su casa desde 2019 (cuando derrotó a Baranchyk) y quiere presentar al público escocés sus cinturones unificados y regalarle a sus fans una más de sus victorias, que quién sabe si podría llegar a ser parte de la carrera del mejor boxeador de Escocia de todos los tiempos y de un miembro del Salón de la Fama.
En el enfrentamiento Taylor parte como amplio favorito para imponerse. Partiendo de la simple contraposición de estilos y cualidades, el monarca es un boxeador mucho más incisivo, eficaz, versátil, astuto y contundente, por lo que es difícil poder proyectar un escenario en el que Catteral terminase venciendo el combate: en la distancia larga y media la precisión y la variedad de recursos del hábil Taylor deberían valerle para ser superior a su retador, mientras que en corta el monarca podría causar daños determinantes con su ventaja en pegada.
Asimismo, Catterall no combate desde noviembre de 2020, nunca se ha medido a un boxeador de la cúspide mundial y en su mayor combate hasta la fecha a duras penas sacó una victoria por la mínima (y cuestionada por muchos) ante un Ohara Davies al que Taylor destruyó en siete asaltos. Por lo tanto, tampoco por experiencia de calidad o por resultados comparativos parece que Catterall vaya a poder dar la enorme sorpresa.
Dicho esto, se debe señalar que Taylor en varias de sus declaraciones ha señalado que no subestima a Catterall y que espera que pueda ofrecer rounds intrincados, algo que realmente es viable, puesto que “El Gato” es zurdo al igual que su rival y además es un invicto, muy motivado por disputar su primer mundial y que posee cualidades, como capacidad de contragolpe.
No obstante, si bien quizás en los cruces de jabs y directos en la distancia media Catterall pueda ser competitivo inicialmente si sabe ser cauteloso e inteligente y gestiona bien los espacios, en cuanto Taylor pueda adaptarse al estilo de su oponente, ajuste y cambie de marcha para efectuar sus diagonales y sus ataques con variación de altura, el triunfo del “Tartan Tornado” debería terminar siendo incuestionable.
Este cartel, que incluirá el cruce del peso pluma entre el doble oro olímpico cubano Robeisy Ramírez 8(4KO)-1 y el irlandés Eric Donovan 14(8KO)-1(1), será emitido en Reino Unido por Sky Sports Main Event desde las 19:00 en hora local, las 20:00 en España y las 13:00 ET/10:00 PT en Estados Unidos, donde lo retransmitirá ESPN+.

With victories against boxers of the level of Regis Prograis and José Carlos Ramírez, British Josh «The Tartan Tornado» Taylor 18(13KO)-0 not only became number 1 in the super lightweight category and undisputed champion, but directly emerged as a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter. That is why fans want to see him face new challenges at welterweight, a division to which he will theoretically move up in the near future and in which he will meet some of the greatest boxers of the world.
Anyway, before heading towards new horizons, Taylor will fight in front of his fans at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, United Kingdom, against fellow British Jack «El Gato» Catterall 26 (13KO)-0. This is a mandatory WBO defense, although it should be noted that Taylor and his team have accepted it solely because it serves their purposes well: as a top pound for pound and without having to prove anything else at super lightweight, he could have abandoned his belts without reproach and thus have gotten rid of this mandatory bout.
All in all, Taylor hasn’t fought close to home since 2019 (when he defeated Baranchyk) and he wants to present his unified belts to the Scottish public and give his fans one more of his victories, which who knows if it could become part of the career of Scotland’s greatest boxer of all time and also a Hall of Famer.
In the match, Taylor is clear favorite to win. Starting from the simple contrast of styles and qualities, the monarch is a much more incisive, effective, versatile, cunning and forceful boxer, so it is difficult to project a scenario in which Catteral would end up winning the fight: at long and mid range, the precision and variety of resources of the skilled Taylor should be enough to be superior to his challenger, while at close range the titlist could cause decisive damage with his advantage in power.
Also, Catterall has not fought since November 2020, he has never faced a world level boxer and in his biggest fight to date he barely won a narrow decision (questioned by many) against Ohara Davies, whom Taylor destroyed in seven rounds. Therefore, neither by quality experience nor by comparative results does it seem that Catterall is going to be able to achieve the enormous upset.
That said, several times Taylor has stated that he does not underestimate Catterall and that the challenger can generate intricate rounds, something that is really viable, since «El Gato» is southpaw like his rival and also an undefeated boxer with qualities (such as counterpunching ability) highly motivated to compete in his first world championship.
However, while perhaps Catterall can be competitive initially exchaning jabs and straight punches at mid-range if he knows how to be cautious and smart and manage distance well, as soon as Taylor can adapt to his opponent’s style, adjust and shift gears to use his attacks in angles, the triumph of the «Tartan Tornado» should end up being unquestionable.
This card, which will also include the featherweight matchup between two time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramírez 8(4KO)-1 and Irishman Eric Donovan 14(8KO)-1(1), will be broadcasted in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event from 19:00 local time, and in the United States on ESPN+ from 13:00 ET/10:00 PT.
