El campeonato del mundo WBO del peso crucero entre Lawrence Okolie y Michal Cieslak encabezará una velada de Matchroom Boxing y DAZN que se desarrollará el domingo en el O2 Arena de Londres, Reino Unido, evento que contará con varios combates interesantes entre los que se incluirá el debut de un medallista olímpico y un campeonato de Europa.
Galal Yafai comienza su carrera profesional
Durante los años Matchroom Boxing ha tenido en su escuadra a muchos insignes púgiles amateur británicos, habiendo conseguido todos ellos importantes logros. Uno más que pretende seguir un exitoso camino con la promotora es Galal Yafai 0(0KO)-0, oro olímpico en los aplazados Juegos Olímpicos de Tokyo que este domingo debutará como profesional enfrentándose en el peso mosca al mexicano Carlos Vado Bautista 10(3KO)-4-1. Dado que este enfrentamiento será a diez asaltos y contará con un título menor WBC en juego, parece evidente que se pretende llevar a un acelerado ascenso en el boxeo profesional a Galal, hermano de los también púgiles Khalid y Gamal Yafai.
Habrá que esperar al domingo para ver cómo se plasma su transición al boxeo profesional, pero evidentemente Yafai partirá como amplísimo favorito ante “El Tigre de Santa Julia”, un boxeador voluntarioso, resistente y con algún triunfo mencionable (por ejemplo truncó el récord invicto de Brian Mosinos) pero que ha padecido derrotas ante boxeadores con una técnica, potencial y cualidades muy inferiores a los del medallista olímpico.
¿Nuevo campeón europeo?
En el evento también se producirá un campeonato de Europa del peso pluma entre el veterano titular Karim Guerfi 30(9KO)-5(3) y el local Jordan “The Thrill” Gill 26(7KO)-1(1)-1, enfrentamiento en el que Matchroom espera que este último púgil logre coronarse y mejore su posicionamiento mundial. Y es que, aunque tras su derrota ante Mario Tinoco pareció que aplazaría sus planes internacionales y que pelearía en la escena británica, Gill sigue centrado en la escalada en los rankings oficiales, en los que es 6º WBA y 8º IBF del peso pluma. Así, si capturase el cinto europeo derrotando al 9º WBC Guerfi quedaría a las puertas de una pugna crucial en la categoría.
En el campeonato Gill será favorito, puesto que, aunque padece graves desajustes tácticos, es un boxeador veloz y bastante hábil que se enfrenta a un Guerfi que, pese a venir de vencer como visitante a Andoni Gago, ha militado casi toda su carrera en el peso gallo, división en la que perdió en el primer round en su última visita a Reino Unido (contra Lee McGregor).
Ciertamente, Guerfi tiene mucho oficio, astucia y cierta versatilidad, cosas que le podrían venir bien ante un adversario que de forma repentina comete importantes errores y que no siempre aprovecha sus cualidades. No obstante, si Gill ofrece su mejor versión de forma consistente, se apoya con firmeza en el jab y en su dinamismo, reduce los cruces de golpes y contragolpea con oportunismo en una pelea táctica, debería poder lograr la decisión de los jueces.
Fowler en recuperación, nuevo KO para Wardley
En principio, serán parte también de la cartelera principal dos peleas que llegan en momentos muy diferentes para sus protagonistas. Por un lado, Anthony Fowler 15(12KO)-2(1), que viene de ganar varios rounds antes de terminar batido por KOT ante el excampeón mundial Liam Smith, tratará de regresar a la senda de la victoria peleando en el peso medio contra el veterano polaco Lukasz Maciec 27(5KO)-3-1, un boxeador competente y duro (nunca ha perdido antes del límite) pero que en principio tiene un nivel inferior y que debería ser vencido por los precisos directos desde la distancia media del británico.
Por el otro lado, se producirá una pelea sin sentido para el invicto peso pesado Fabio Wardley 12(11KO)-0, que no debería tener problema alguno para noquear en pocos asaltos a Daniel Martz 20(17KO)-9(8)-1, un oponente al que han batido en menos de tres asaltos Luis Ortiz, Joseph Parker, Bryant Jennings, etc.
Este evento será emitido por DAZN desde las 18:00 del domingo en hora española, las 17:00 en Reino Unido y las 12:00 ET/9:00 PT.

The WBO cruiserweight world championship between Lawrence Okolie and Michal Cieslak will headline an evening of Matchroom Boxing and DAZN that will take place on Sunday at the O2 Arena in London, United Kingdom, event that will have in its support several interesting fights, such as the debut of an Olympic medalist and an European championship.
Galal Yafai begins his professional career
Over the years Matchroom Boxing has had many distinguished British amateur fighters in its squad, all of whom have obtained significant achievements. One more boxer who intends to follow a successful path with this promotional company is Galal Yafai 0(0KO)-0, Olympic gold medalist at the postponed Tokyo Olympics who will make his professional debut this Sunday facing Mexican Carlos Vado Bautista 10(3KO)-4-1 in a flyweight bout. As this confrontation will be a ten-rounder and will have a minor WBC title at stake, it seems clear that the plan for Galal (brother of Khalid and Gamal Yafai) is an accelerated climb in the professional boxing.
We will have to wait until Sunday to see how successful is his transition to the paid ranks, but obviously Yafai is overwhelming favorite against «El Tigre de Santa Julia», a willful, resistant boxer with some mentionable triumphs (for example, he beat the undefeated Brian Mosinos) but who has lost against boxers with a technique, potential and qualities far inferior to those of the Olympic medalist.
New European champion?
The event will also feature a European featherweight championship between veteran titleholder Karim Guerfi 30(9KO)-5(3) and local Jordan “The Thrill” Gill 26(7KO)-1(1)-1, clash in which Matchroom hopes that this last fighter will be crowned champion and will improve his world ranking. Although after his defeat against Mario Tinoco it seemed that he would postpone his international plans and that he would fight on the British scene, Gill continues focused on climbing in the official rankings, in which he is 6th WBA and 8th IBF at featherweight. Thus, if he captures the European belt by defeating 9th WBC Guerfi, he would be on the verge of a crucial fight in the division.
In the championship Gill will be the favorite, since, although he makes some serious tactical mistakes, he is a fast and quite skillful and faces a boxer who, despite coming from beating Andoni Gago as a visitor, has had almost his entire career in bantamweight, a division in which he lost in the first round on his last visit to the UK (against Lee McGregor).
Certainly, Guerfi has a lot of experience, cunning and a certain versatility, things that could come in handy against an opponent who doesn’t always take advantage of his qualities. However, if Gill puts in the ring his best version consistently, relies heavily on his jab and dynamism, reduces exchanges and counterpunches opportunistically in a tactical fight, he should be able to get the favorable decision.
Fowler returns, another KO for Wardley
In theory, two more fights will also be part of the main card, bouts in which their protagonists come in very different situation. On the one hand, Anthony Fowler 15(12KO)-2(1), who won several rounds before ending up beaten by TKO against former world champion Liam Smith, will try to return to the path of victory against the veteran Polish Lukasz Maciec 27(5KO)-3-1, a competent and tough boxer (he has never lost by stoppage) but who has a lower level and who probably will lose against the precise straight punches from mid range of the British.
On the other hand, there will be a meaningless fight for undefeated heavyweight Fabio Wardley 12(11KO)-0, who should have no problem knocking out in a few rounds Daniel Martz 20(17KO)-9(8)-1, opponent who has been beaten in less than three rounds by Luis Ortiz, Joseph Parker, Bryant Jennings, etc.
