Previa: Eliminatoria Colbert-García, prueba de fuego Russell-Postol y mundial Ancajas-Martínez en velada de PBC este sábado

Por el momento, el único evento de Premier Boxing Champions que se mantiene en pie y que está confirmado para producirse antes del encabezado por el Spence-Ugás es el que tendrá lugar este sábado en la sala The Chelsea en el Cosmopolitan de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos. En el segmento principal emitido por Showtime se desarrollarán tres buenos combates: una interesante eliminatoria, un test decisivo para un prometedor pegador y un campeonato mundial.
Un aplazamiento de la coronación
Había bastante consenso respecto a que el día 25 de febrero el estadounidense Chris “Primetime” Colbert 16(6KO)-0 se proclamaría campeón WBA del peso superpluma derrotando al titular venezolano Roger Gutiérrez, pero la baja de este último supuso que el acceso al mundial, y la probable coronación, del invicto se aplazasen unos meses. De todos modos, aunque esto resultó una decepción para el púgil, al menos Colbert no desperdiciará su campamento de entrenamiento, ya que se le encontró un rival de sustitución que, quizás, puede ser incluso más exigente que Gutiérrez.
El remplazo será el dominicano Héctor Luis “Droide” García 14(10KO)-0, un olímpico, zurdo e imbatido como profesional que posee un boxeo táctico que puede resultar difícil de neutralizar totalmente. Por otra parte, García tiene algunas similitudes en su forma de combatir con otro zurdo, Jezzrel Corrales, el púgil que hasta ahora ha generado una pelea más complicada a Colbert.
No obstante, “Primetime” es en las apuestas amplio favorito para imponerse, puesto que tiene ventaja en rapidez, mayor fluidez en el uso de las combinaciones, desparpajo y versatilidad, elementos que deberían permitirle decentar las acciones a su favor. En cualquier caso, para ello será clave que no permita a su rival boxear a su ritmo, que trate de anticiparse ofensivamente, que no se descuide en larga y que, ya sea con espacios o sin ellos, mantenga una buena cadencia de golpeo.
Russell busca irrumpir en el top
Es sorprendente que el olímpico estadounidense Gary Antuanne Russell 14(14KO)-0 todavía no aparezca en ninguno de los cuatro rankings, pero esto seguramente cambiará si vence su combate en el semifondo del Colbert-García. Y es que Russell se enfrentará al excampeón mundial ucraniano Viktor “The Iceman” Postol 31(12KO)-3, 8º WBC. Más allá del posicionamiento en las listas, esta es una prueba de fuego para Russell, púgil que hasta ahora ha arrollado a su oposición y que mantiene un 100% de knockouts pero que no se ha medido todavía a un top 15, llegándole el paso adelante decisivo ante un Postol que ha sufrido sus únicas derrotas por decisión y ante nombres como Terence Crawford, Josh Taylor y José Carlos Ramírez.
Evidentemente este es un reto muy importante, especialmente contando Postol con ventaja en altura y alcance y con un boxeo lineal muy efectivo, en el que su constante jab, su continuo desplazamiento y sus eventuales uno-dos crean complicaciones a la mayoría de sus rivales. Aun así, Russell es mucho más potente, está más rodado, tiene buena base técnica y está motivado para impresionar tratando de lograr lo que nadie ha conseguido hasta ahora: vencer antes del límite a Postol.
Si Russell tiene paciencia y aguarda los momentos en corta para intentar causar estragos con su pegada quizás pueda lograr el objetivo, si bien sólo con que salga con el brazo en alto claramente ya obtendría un resultado excelente teniendo en cuenta su escasa experiencia y que se enfrenta a un púgil que viene de perder controvertidamente con un campeón unificado.
Décima puesta en juego de Ancajas
La emisión de Showtime se iniciará con un campeonato mundial IBF del peso supermosca entre el monarca filipino Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas 33(22KO)-1-2 y el retador voluntario argentino Fernando Daniel “Pumita” Martínez 13(8KO)-0. Esta será la décima puesta en juego del titular Ancajas, resultando un mérito evidente llegar a dobles dígitos en defensas en una época en la que los boxeadores del top suelen pelear unas dos veces al año. Por otro lado, esta será la segunda pelea que el titular disputa en su contrato con PBC, estando por ver si se volverá a pactar tras ella la unificación contra Kazuto Ioka.
De todos modos, Ancajas no debería mirar al futuro, puesto que Martínez es un boxeador muy fuerte, agresivo y con un buen gancho zurdo, armas que no deben ser infravaloradas estando frente a un campeón que suele intercambiar más de lo que le conviene y que no es ni mucho menos tan eficaz en corta como en larga y media-larga. No obstante, en las apuestas Ancajas es favorito, ya que se considera que si usa su afiladísima izquierda y sus variados recursos aprovechando su ventaja en dimensiones debería hacer pagar al contragolpe la valentía de Martínez, que teóricamente tendría su mejor opción de generar problemas críticos si consigue generar una pelea física cuerpo a cuerpo.
Esta cartelera será emitida en Estados Unidos por Showtime desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT, las 4:00 de la madrugada en España, donde se podrá ver este evento a través de un PPV de Fite.

At the moment, the only Premier Boxing Champions event that is still standing and that is confirmed to take place before the Spence-Ugás is this Saturday card in The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, United States. In the segment broadcasted by Showtime, three good fights will take place: an interesting eliminator, a decisive test for a promising puncher and a world championship.
A postponement of the proclamation
There was considerable consensus that on February 25 American Chris «Primetime» Colbert 16(6KO)-0 would be proclaimed WBA super featherweight champion defeating Venezuelan title holder Roger Gutiérrez, but an illness of the latter led to a postponement for a few months of the world championship fight and of the probable coronation of the undefeated boxer. Still, while this was a disappointment for the fighter, at least Colbert won’t waste his training camp, as he will end up fighting a replacemente boxer who, to some degree, is a harder opponent than Gutierrez.
The substitute will be Dominican Héctor Luis “Droide” García 14(10KO)-0, an Olympic, southpaw and unbeaten boxer who possesses a tactical way of fighting that can be difficult to completely neutralize. In addition, Garcia has some similarities in his style with another southpaw, Jezzrel Corrales, the fighter who has thus far generated more difficulties to Colbert.
However, “Primetime” is the wide favorite in the betting odds, since he has an advantage in speed, a greater fluidity in the use of combinations, a lot of confidence and a good versatility that should allow him to win the majority of the rounds. In any case, it will be a key to victory for Colbert to not allow his rival to box at his rhythm, anticipate offensively and, with distance or without it, maintain a high punching rate.
Russell looks to break into the top
It is surprising that American Olympic Gary Antuanne Russell 14 (14KO)-0 still does not appear in any of the four official rankings, but that will change if he wins his co-feature bout in the Colbert-Garcia card. In it Russell will face former world champion Viktor “The Iceman” Postol 31(12KO)-3, 8th WBC. Letting aside the positioning in the rankings, this is a crucial test for Russell, a fighter who has so far overwhelmed his opposition and who maintains a 100% knockout ratio but who has not yet fought against a top 15 and who will have a step up in competition against a rival who has suffered his only defeats by decision against Terence Crawford, Josh Taylor and José Carlos Ramírez.
Obviously, this is a very important challenge, especially with Postol having an advantage in height and reach and a very effective boxing, in which his constant jab, his continuous movement and his eventual one-twos create difficulties for most of his opponents. Even so, Russell is much more powerful, has more recent activity, a good technical base and is motivated to impress trying to achieve what no one has achieved so far: beat Postol by stoppage.
If Russell is patient and waits for the moments at close range to try to generate damage with his forcefulness, he may be able to reach his goal. However, just by coming out of the ring with his arm raised, Russell would have obtained an excellent result considering his lack of experience and that he faces a fighter who has just controversially lost to a unified champion.
Ancajas’ tenth defense
The Showtime broadcast will kick off with an IBF super flyweight world championship between Filipino titlist Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas 33(22KO)-1-2 and Argentine challenger Fernando Daniel “Pumita” Martínez 13(8KO)-0. This will be the tenth defense for the beltholder Ancajas, something that is an obvious merit in an era in which top boxers usually fight two times per year. On the other hand, this will be the second match of Ancajas’ contract with PBC, and it remains to be seen if the unification against Kazuto Ioka will be agreed again after it.
In any case, Ancajas should not look to the future, since Martínez is a very strong and aggressive boxer with a good left hook, weapons that cannot be underestimated against a champion who usually exchanges more than he should and that is not as effective at close range as he is at long and mid-long range. However, Ancajas is the favorite in the betting odds, since it is considered that if he uses his sharp left hand and his resources taking advantage of his size, he should benefit from Martínez’s courage to counterattack him. As for the challenger, he could have his best chance if he manages to create an attrition fight.
