Tres meses después de obtener la mayor victoria de su carrera profesional, el peso crucero australiano Floyd Masson 12(7KO)-0 volvió a subirse al ring este viernes ante el indio Vikas Singh 11(6KO)-2-1, boxeador que hizo todo lo que estuvo en su mano para intentar ser competitivo y aguantar. Aun así, Singh no pudo evitar ser derribado en el último round y quedar muy cerca del KOT, si bien logró resistir y llegar a la decisión de los jueces, en la que Masson obtuvo un amplísimo triunfo unánime: doble 80-71 y un 80-72.
La superioridad del zurdo Masson se hizo notar desde el primer asalto, conectando directos al rostro y ganchos al cuerpo a la vez que evitaba las manos de su adversario con oportunos pasos atrás o movimientos de cintura u hombros. Dado que veía que tenía ventaja en potencia, velocidad y técnica, Masson se sobreconfió en defensa, permitiendo con ello que su adversario conectase algunas manos, pero esto sólo llevó al local a intentar poner más agresividad a su boxeo en adelante, logrando impactar duros golpes de poder en la distancia corta.
Aunque el nivel muy bajo de la mayoría de los adversarios de Singh podría sugerir a algunos antes del combate que su actuación sería mala, que no le pondría esfuerzo o que caería a las primeras de cambio, el boxeador indio soportó el castigo con mucha entereza, trató de contestar en corta con valentía en los intercambios y llegó con ciertos puños precisos aquí y allá. No obstante, la mayor destreza y rapidez de Masson le servía tanto para imponer sus directos y cruzados en la distancia larga y media como para golpear con sus uppercuts y sus ganchos abajo en corta.
A pesar de que Masson iba ganando los asaltos y ofreciendo un superior trabajo ofensivo, en ocasiones acompañado de acciones defensivas de bastante habilidad, Singh se mantuvo en el combate hasta el último round caminando y resistiendo las ofensivas, tratando de replicar aprovechando los descuidos rivales y dando asaltos de rodaje al local para prepararse para mayores retos que le llegarán en el futuro. No obstante, muy cerca de la conclusión, un Singh cansado y mermado terminó cayendo al tapiz por acumulación de castigo, y en la reanudación sólo fue salvado por la campana de un KOT que parecía cuestión de segundos.
Con su victoria en su 11º combate sobre el veterano exretador mundial Mark Flanagan, que aguantó todos los rounds ante el entonces campeón Denis Lebedev, Masson mostró que incluso pese a no tener todavía una gran experiencia es un boxeador de buen nivel y que podría aspirar a acceder al top 15 en el futuro. A esta perspectiva se suma también la buena impresión general que dejan algunas de sus acciones al ataque o en defensa y una potencia que no se debe subestimar.
Por ello, si bien el circuito australiano le dará pocas oportunidades para amasar la necesaria experiencia de calidad y quizás cuando dé un paso adelante en el extranjero se encontrará ante un reto ante el que no estará totalmente preparado, Masson tiene más cualidades que algunos de los ranqueados, no tardará en estar clasificado y si sigue ganando terminaremos viéndole en un importante duelo en el peso crucero.

Three months after obtaining the biggest victory of his professional career, Australian cruiserweight Floyd Masson 12(7KO)-0 got back in the ring this Friday against the Indian Vikas Singh 11(6KO)-2-1, a boxer who did everything he could to try to be competitive and resist. Even so, Singh could not avoid being knocked down in the last round and being put very close to the TKO, although he managed to reach the decision of the judges, in which Masson obtained a wide unanimous victory: double 80-71 and one 80 -72.
The superiority of the southpaw Masson was evident from the first round, connecting straight punches to the face and hooks to the body while avoiding the hands of his opponent with steps back or movements of waist and shoulders. As he saw that he had an advantage in power, speed and technique, Masson was a bit overconfident in defense, thus allowing his opponent to impact some shots, but this only led the local to try to put more aggressiveness in his boxing from then on, managing to hit his rival with hard power punches at close range.
Although the very low level of most of Singh’s opponents could suggest to some before the fight that his performance would be poor, that he would not put any effort into it or that he would go down easily, the Indian boxer withstood the punishment with great fortitude, tried to fight back bravely in the exchanges and connected some precise punches here and there. However, Masson’s skill and speed served him to impact his straight punches and hooks in long and medium range as well as to connect his uppercuts and his hooks down in close range.
Despite the fact that Masson was winning the rounds and was offering a better work, sometimes accompanied by quite skillful defensive actions, Singh stayed in the fight until the last round walking and resisting the offensives, trying to counterpunch taking advantage of his rival’s mistakes and giving useful rounds to the favorite to prepare for greater challenges. However, very close to the conclusion, Singh was tired and ended up dropped due to the accumulation of punishment, and at the restart he was only saved by the bell from a TKO that seemed like a matter of seconds.
With his victory in his 11th fight over former world title challenger Mark Flanagan, who lasted the distance against the then-champion Denis Lebedev, Masson showed that even though he still doesn’t have a lot of experience, he is a good fighter and that he could aspire to access the top 15 in the future. Added to this perspective is also the good general impression generated by some of his actions in attack or defense and a power that should not be underestimated.
So while the Australian scence will not give him enough opportunities to amass the necessary quality experience and perhaps when he steps up abroad he will find himself faced with a challenge for which he will not be fully prepared, Masson has more qualities than some of the ranked fighters, he will be soon on the lists of the organizations and if he continues to win he will end up reaching an important duel at cruiserweight.
