El plata olímpico Richard Torrez debutó como peso pesado profesional abrumando a Allen Melson

En el semifondo del Ramírez-Pedraza se produjo el debut profesional del plata olímpico estadounidense Richard Torrez 1(1KO)-0 que, pese al desorden que puso en la pugna Allen Melson 6(3KO)-4(4), derribó tres veces a su rival antes de vencerle en el segundo episodio de un duelo de un sólo lado.
El zurdo Torrez salió al ring dispuesto a buscar un knockout, así que presionó a su adversario con considerable intensidad tratando de encontrar la oportunidad para conectar golpes de poder ante un Melson que se desplazaba intentando evitar el peligro. Todavía en el primer asalto un gancho de izquierda en un clinch puso en el tapiz a Melson, mientras que en la reanudación una combinación de curvos de Torrez derribó a otra vez a su adversario y pareció llevar al árbitro a decretar la conclusión. Con todo, incluso aunque los miembros de la comisión y los equipos de ambos entraron al ring al ver al árbitro gesticular en lo que parecía el típico movimiento de brazos que señala el KOT, el tercer hombre realmente quería indicar que no había habido knockdown sino un resbalón.
Por lo tanto el choque siguió y, aunque Torrez sufría un aparatoso corte por un choque de cabezas provocado por su desordenado rival y aunque Melson embarraba el choque con sus acciones heterodoxas (a las que el favorito contribuía al desbordarle por las diagonales), en el segundo asalto el favorito se anotó otro knockdown al contragolpear con un gancho zurdo a su contrincante, que estaba algo girado tras errar un ataque. Melson tiró golpes a la desesperada en la reanudación, pero no pudo evitar que nuevos hooks de izquierda en un agarre le pusiesen de espaldas en el tapiz y supusiesen, ahora sí, el final del combate.
Dado que no es un peso pesado gigante (1,88 m o 6’ 2”) y están en el recuerdo algunas duras derrotas que padeció como amateur, puede que algunos tengan dudas sobre las posibilidades de Torrez en la categoría, algo a lo que no habrá contribuido de manera excesivamente positiva con este sencillo triunfo en un choque caótico. No obstante, es un joven boxeador fuerte y contundente, bastante ágil y que es evidente que posee muy buenos recursos tácticos y técnicos, por lo que sin duda el debut profesional de Torrez es una interesante inclusión en una división del peso pesado que actualmente tiene un notable número de buenos prospectos y de excelentes combates potenciales.

In the co-feature of the Ramírez-Pedraza card took place the professional debut of American Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez 1(1KO)-0 who, despite the messy fight created by Allen Melson 6(3KO)-4(4), dropped his opponent three times before beating him in the second round of a one-sided duel.
The southpaw Torrez started the fight looking for a knockout, so he pressed his rival with considerable intensity trying to find the opportunity to land power shots against a moving Melson, whose main objective was to avoid danger. Still in the first round a left hook in a clinch put Melson on the mat, while in the restart a combination of hooks by Torrez knocked down his opponent again and seemed to prompt the referee to stop the bout. However, even though the members of the commission and the teams of the boxers entered the ring seeing the referee gesticulate in what looked like the signal for a TKO, the third man just wanted to indicate that it wasn’t a knockdown but a slip.
Therefore, the clash continued and, although Torrez suffered a bad cut due to a clash of heads caused by his rival and although Melson muddied the clash with his unorthodox actions, in the second round the favorite scored another knockdown by counterattacking his opponent with a left hook. Melson threw desperate shots in the restart, but could not avoid being dropped to the canvas again by new left hooks in a clinch. Then the referee really stopped the fight.
As he is not a giant heavyweight (1.88 m or 6′ 2”) and some tough defeats he suffered as an amateur are still in the memory, many could doubt about his chances in the division, something to which it will not have contributed in a very positive way his simple victory in this chaotic clash. However, he is a strong and forceful young boxer, quite agile and who evidently has very good tactical and technical resources, so without a doubt Torrez’s professional debut is an interesting inclusion in a heavyweight division that currently has a remarkable number of interesting prospects and excellent potential fights.
